While being drunk and chilling with a few friends, David Howell, one of Magnus's friends, blurts out a move that traps Danya's queen. When solving puzzles you might spot tactics like a grandmaster but in real games you miss them a lot. This is because you're specifically looking out for them. Here, Magnus asking his friend *how* he is able to trap the queen implies that he didn't think of the idea of trapping the queen beforehand. Thus it is highly probable that he would've simply played a move other than trapping the queen.

What he said is true and what you said is also true, however… if Magnus had taken 10 secs or hell, even 5 secs to find the move, then fair enough, but it was literally less than 1 second and he moved his knight. We are talking about the BEST/🐐 chess player to have ever played the game of chess ♟️. Hes a 5X World Chess Champion, 4X World Rapid Chess Champion and 6X World Blitz Chess Champion, I'm pretty sure he would have seen it (2-3 secs after his friend made the comment) even if his friend didn’t make the comment. If he wouldn’t have, I’m fairly certain he would have went on to win the game regardless! People are acting like this was intentional and that Magnus actually needed help to win a lichess game; which he was streaming live! Thank god for Magnus, that his friend was at all the 15 world titles he won, bc there’s no way he win them on his own. Come on people wtf are we really talking about here?!? 🤦🏻‍♂️

it is external assistance that he didn't ask for. if it's a rated game, the rating points need to be adjusted, if it's a tournament game, the assistance should result in an automatic loss. i do not believe he intended to cheat, he was just having fun. that said, the rules apply to him as well, and its better to be harsh with the application of the rules than to decide to randomly not apply them. ps magnus is great, big fan. note also magnus pointed out it was cheating at the time. he himself would probably agree with everything i just said, he's a big stickler for the rules.
