Spoiler Alert--- I noticed in some of the comments that people think this movie is about a girl meeting a ghost and i have to admit i thought that to at first, but now its clear to me its not a ghost at all it is something from her subconscious of her grandmother telling her stories when she was very young about her life in which she imagined herself in her grandmothers story often times as her partner that her grandmother later marries, as sometimes marnie switches names from anna chan to the guy. When she sees the house the whole story of her grandmas life plays out for her as she picks up the pieces and finds a way to heal with the loss and anger of her family dying on her, she is able to get a better perspective and a real goodbye. She sees that her life is not so bad to as her grandmother envies her life knowing its much better then the life she had and in a way its her way of making it up to her grand daughter and clarifying many things for her, she then sees her life is not so bad after-all and that she is not forgotten.

When every question I had about this movie was answered, my heart strings began to break. This is Studio Ghibli at its best, but it unfortunate that audiences love 3D movies these days. You know what makes me mad? This movie flopped in Japan and led to the closing of ghibli, but cheap cash in movies of amines like love live or other moe stuff break the Japanese box office?! Don't get me wrong I don't mind all the superfluous fluff anime but when it is overshadowing brilliance like this that isn't OKAY. I look forward to the day that japan gets over all the "kawaii desu" and reexamines what makes their brand of animation important, make me proud to be an anime fan again...
@CrazyHand1969 жыл бұрын
TheEvaGuy So is Studio Ghibli actually done? And this movie flopped? Smh
@TheBlindGoalie9 жыл бұрын
TheEvaGuy The problem is not isolated in Japan and in animation, but all over the world. Using the music industry in the West for example, "music" that is just mostly generic club beat with repetitive, generic lyrics about sex, drugs, money, drinking, and partying get more recognition and earn more money than songs with more musical complexity and ambiguous meanings. It is not a crime to enjoy the lower quality entertainment, but the problem is that a whole genre is being defined because of pandering (moe fluff anime/ generic club music). Its the truth in life. The most important, significant things are the less recognized because it requires greater knowledge, awareness, and pure passion that most people don't have.
@chris929459 жыл бұрын
TheEvaGuy : Actually it didn't flopped. It grossed three times over it's bugdet but it was certainly didn't lived up the box office expectations and success of most Ghibli films. And the underwhelming gross of both Marnie and Princess Kaguya are just one side of the problem, the main issue why Ghibli is on hold is because Miyazaki retired and they don't have a guy right now who carries the torch the same way he did. Hiromasa Yonebayashi who directed both Marnie and Arriety had the most potential but a couple of weeks ago he left the company to do his own stuff. I hope Ghibli doesn't close in the main future but if they did, that would be both very sad yet understandable.
@spoonsharkart45509 жыл бұрын
chris92945 there were talks of Evangelion creator Hideki Anno taking the reigns of the company, that would be awesome. He's a veteran of japanese animation almost as much as Miyazaki. i don't know if he has it anymore though seeing as the evangelion movies have been largely underwhelming in terms of recapturing the original series.

I first heard about this movie when I was checking out if there were any recent Studio Ghibli movies because a year or so before I watched The Wind Rises, the first Ghibli film I ever watched in theaters and was eager to watch another one. Then I found the trailer on KZbin and loved every second of it. I was dead set on watching this in the theater. However, it wasn't playing anywhere near me. Not even the theater where I saw the Wind Rises. The closest location I could get was in New York and that was too far for me. I was incredibly disappointed by this. I had no choice but to wait for the Blu-ray release. Somehow finding the Blu-ray was impossible to find. I couldn't find it in any major store that sells movies. Again, I was disappointed but I kept looking and wouldn't you know, I finally found a Blu-ray copy of When Marnie Was There at my local Wal-mart which I generally never go to. I gotta give Wal-mart credit for this find because I finally got it and I watched it immediately. This movie had me crying multiple times, especially the ending. This movie hit me on a personal level. I got the main character completely because I saw a lot of me in her, I love stories where a character is out of their element and exploring someplace new (which is in this movie), its mysterious and haunting and emotional and just...really got me in a deep level that I never could of expected from this movie. I'm seriously considering this movie as being one of my favorite movies of all time. Its that great! I

I was shocked at how good this film was, like I’m talking it hit me like a brick wall to the side of the face. I was NOT ready for that and had no idea an animated film could evoke such emotion. As a note, this isn’t a one watch film, because of the events at the end. Like Fight Club and Vertigo, elements toward the back of the visual and storytelling come out to the front on rewatch, others take on different meanings - it’s like seeing the film for the first time all over again.

For me, nothing will ever top my personal favourite, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, but hopefully this film will make my top 10, or even top 5 Ghibli films list, especially since it's probably going to be their last film and because of that, I really hope you will do a top 10 Studio Ghibli films list, Chris! That would be great.

Man I love this movie. Not really an anime fan, but Ghibli movies feel as if they were made just for me. If I had children, they would be watching it right now. Wonderful way to nourish empathy. Totally cried at the end. One very special movie and now one of my favorites.

I love how anime is the only source of mature storytelling for kids,and for the most part, for adults(mainly the only adult cartoons with mature themes)!!! By the way Chris Stuckmann , have you seen Fullmetal Alchemist? If so could you review it/FMA Brotherhood?

The Angry Little Alchemist *only* is a bit of stretch. it's certainly the central source nowadays, but check early Disney stuff man. Dumbo, Bambi, Pinnochio.. classics
@TheXBRGUY9 жыл бұрын
anon03030605 Ya but those are old classics, it's kind of to be expected.

The Angry Little Alchemist I just like the fact that the anime industry, as a national treasure to Japan, is taken seriously (most of the time, anyways) as a mature medium to present ideas and stories just like films and TV. Now if only we can convince the masses that just because the visuals is stylized and unrealistic, doesn't make it inferior to live action in any way. I mean we already have TV series trying to go for a cinematic experience nowadays, don't we?

I will check the movie out some time. I have a few questions for you, Chris. If you notice this comment, I hope you'll answer. 1. Since you're a fan of anime I have always wondered about what you think of the Pokémon anime. So yeah, what's your opinion on it? 2. Which do you recommend I watch it in English or Japanese with English subtitles? Anyway thanks for recommending this, I will check it out in a few days for sure.

So I watched this movie today not expecting to cry but I did. This movie reminded me of my own grandma. I’m very close to her and I don’t know what I’ll do what she is gone. This was a beautiful movie. ❤

Finally saw this movie. Why is taking them so long to release on Blu-Ray and DVD in the UK?

If you haven't seen a Ghibli movie start with Spirited Away. It is universally enjoyable for all ages. They make true family films. Films that a family can watch and every generation can get something beautiful from them.

When I saw this movie, I got SO emotional. I've seen it three times since, I own it on DVD, and I still get welled up even talking about it! It's one of my favourites out of Studio Ghibli, for sure. ♥♡♥

Actually,I don't think it's going to happen. Guillermo has a history of canceling projects. He sent the script of what he intended to be the first season of the live-action show, as Urasawa requested and approved it, and we haven't heard about it again. It's been a while.

This.... this movie.... I have no words describing how beautiful it is from Studio Ghibli. Miyazaki-sama / Studio Ghibli, you never seize to amaze me with your storytelling. If this is the last film from them then I have no regrets. For me, it is THE best saved for last thus far.

Good job, as usual Chris! I really appreciate your reviews, they are very punctual and moving at the same time. I am really waiting for this film to be released in my country. Unfortunately, as they did before for Studio Ghibli's previous products, the distributors have planned only two days for this film to be screened, in September. This is really sad because there would be less chances for such a masterpiece to be known and appreciated.

What most critics and audiences alike seem to ignore in When Marnie Was There, was that this is not merely an animated film of love and friendship, like most Disney movies do, but also a delicately depicted commentary on child abuse and bad parenting. It may not be as imaginative as past Ghibli films, but it still retained the emotional reverberation, the nostalgia, the solemn-yet-resounding magic of spiritual enchantment, and a masterful storytelling. This is damn one of the best and most numinous animated movies to come out in a while, and it deserve a fucking Oscar win for Best Animated Film, perhaps even a nom for Best Picture.

@onlythefacts9999 жыл бұрын
Whichever suits your pallet. The book it was based on is by a British author and based in Norfolk, England but the movie is adapted to take place in Japan. I can't comment on the quality of the dub as I've only seen the sub.
