One of the most common questions asked of Martin is if he ever gets bit by the critters he helps and works with. In this video he will address that issue and tell the story of when he worked at Busch Gardens and one eagle "playfully" put all four of his talons through Martin's hand.

Our Mission
Founded in 1997 in Cedar City Utah, we are a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, wildlife and environmental education, and the development of the Cedar Canyon Nature Park.
Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release
The Southwest Wildlife Foundation of Utah (SWF) cares for more than 100 sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife annually. Restoring them to health and returning them to the wild is our primary goal, but for those that cannot be released due to disabilities, the Cedar Canyon Nature Park (CCNP) can provide them with a permanent home in a natural setting while enhancing our visitors educational experience at the park.
Informing, Educating and Inspiring
The SWF provides over 100 educational programs reaching over 30,000 people annually. We believe providing educational outreach programs to schools, scout groups and community events, with focus on children and families, will make the greatest impact in preserving our wildlife, the environment, our public lands and our resources for future generations to enjoy.
Martin Tyner
Since age twelve, with a bird on his arm, Martin has captivated audiences sharing his knowledge and experience of his wildlife friends.
At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors.
“One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and fascination for these powerful creatures.”
Martin Tyner is a federally licensed falconer, eagle falconer, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife propagator, and wildlife and environmental educator.
He has been providing wildlife and environmental programs throughout the western United States, to schools, scouts and community groups for over fifty years.

Martin's Hawks and Falcons are Majestic Creatures, 4 holes in his hand, thinking about it is making me queasy, I found a sparrow in my house, my father died 2 days later, it was flying around the house, I was terrified, I am very superstitious about birds, or paintings or ornaments of birds, I would be too scared of Martin's creatures, not through superstition, the brute strength , the talons, beaks and the massive wings flapping would scare the hell out of me...

Seriously? Did you know that the largest eagle is a harpy? Out in the jungle, Harpies hunt sloths, grown sloths. They can even glide and fly with prey almost their size. In mongolia, there are subspecies of golden eagle witch are used by falconers in a tradition amd will usually hunt wolves with their golden eagles. The first golden eagle flys up to scout, then it hunts the wolf down whilst trying to kill it, then comes the other eagle and secures the prey though not often is the prey alive

Hi from Scotland. I have a friend who is a falconer and he tells the tale of a friend of his who was cleaning out the mews where he kept his Buzzard and got careless. Something spooked his bird and it jumped onto his bare arm with both sets of talons going right through. In great pain, he managed to release one foot and was trying to manoeuvre the Buzzard into a perch when it grabbed onto his free wrist, effectively handcuffing him. Dripping blood, all he could do was sit and gently talk to his bird to calm it. It took 30 minutes for the bird to release him and he lost quite a bit of blood but he said it was his own fault, not his Buzzard's. My friend would never let me help out unless I had a gauntlet on.

When we lived in Las Vegas thirty some years ago, we had a neighbor who was a wildlife expert, working mostly with bats. Well that's good to hear at least hehe ;) Most wild animals can sense if a human is there to help or not, and in those cases they will more likely give 'warning' bites or scratches when you handle them instead of using full force like when somebody is about to harm them or something so that makes a huge difference as well of course.

Them trying to bite and claw him is a good sign, a wild bird that doesn't try to fight or resist in any way is usually in really bad shape. Them trying to bite and claw shows there's still life and fight left in them.

Martin you are so lucky, watching you with that bird, the way you care for it. I would love to have an eagle on my arm and be able to pet it lovingly like you do 💙💜❤️💚

Scout is a gorgeous creature & Martin is a VERY VERY wise human. Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom and your beautiful friendships with these magnificent creatures. PS - Scout didn't look scroungey to me, in fact he still doesn't look scroungey to me even after Martin said it. LOL

That sounds like agonizing pain! Idk how you could sit still while those wooden sticks were being shoved into those holes in your hand! I'm glad you still have your arm!

I got the book, and I got Scout's print as well as autographs. It's a nice easy read, and breaks up nicely while in a waiting room of a doctor's office, not to mention the interesting animal stories. If there is one word for the book it is Determination - from the git go, when parents thought he was just playing w/birds.

wow , what a story! I often wondered why you do not always wear protective gear over all exposed skin, but your story helps a bit. God bless you and your good work. I often follow the eagle nesting cams and the peregrine falcons , then I fly over to the hummingbirds, whose images raised funds for tiny preemie baby care. Life - it's about life. It MUST be about life. Shocked to have to say so out loud - I thought everyone felt so, but no. Maybe covid will help people to appreciate and engage in life in better and helpful ways more and more. Happy New Year!

Great story, it just goes to show that these birds have instinctive mechanisms but we have tamed them. You are running a great program for these beautiful birds - I hope you sell a lot of books and receive funding so you could better care for them.

Thank you for your interest but none of the animals we handle are tame. Our wildlife ambassadors are trained, but still wild. Generally, any wild animal that acts "tame" is very sick.
