The great players would be the strikers, the play makers and those that assist in the scoring. Although we have great defenders and goalkeepers, they are not held in the same esteem as those whose responsibility is to consistently score goals to win matches.

Defence is just as important as attack. many coaches use defensive tactics and there are many defenders, keepers who are much more famous than fowards bc they were important in their role maybe even more. There are just more individual accolades for fowards and people love fowards more but it doesn't take it away the importance of the defence for the game.

I was a small boy in Liverpool in 1970 and I remember the wonder of that World Cup, that Brazil team and Pele. A few years later, I guess I was now about 8 years old, I remember us all doing Cruyff turns in the school yard unless you wanted to be a box to box midfielder like Beckenbauer . Then in my teens / early 20’s along came Maradona who was impossible to define. I lived in Athens for a while and saw AC Milan destroy Barecelona in the 1994 European champions final, what a team! I lived in Paris during the pomp of Zidane, and then Ronaldo 1, Ronaldo 2 but this guy Messi really takes the biscuit.
