That short fight they have is brutal and efficient and does a masterful job of showing that while Morpheus is very adept (and we have seen this by how well he handles Neo earlier) even all his skills are completely useless against Smith who savagely beats him into submission. It's part of the story of the fights in that movie. That way, when Neo decides to stop and face Smith at the end ("he's beginning to believe..."), we as the audience know what is at stake. The Spike Lee version of "Old Boy" isn't bad at all. The problem is that it will inevitably be compared to the original Park-Chan Wook version, _and come up short._ It's not an insult to Spike Lee, it's just that the original was a masterpiece with no practical room for improvement.
@pabloc88082 ай бұрын
The problem is the original Oldboy hallway sequence works within the narrative; it's both a sad and a brutal movie, and the scene is gritty and realistic: think when the guy stabs Oh Dae-Su, everyone steps back because it's a serious escalation of the violence, and those goons weren't prepared to see that happen. The score makes the scene almost sad or melancholic. So while Spike Lee's version is great when it comes to choreography, it falls short when it comes to everything else, because now it's just "the protagonist is a badass who beats up a bunch of thugs" and we've seen that a thousand times.

Which would you know make the knife twist around in his back?And cause it immense serious pain, discomfort and inability to do much ut he fights like its not even there after getting up

Jason Statham is an incredible movie fighter. He has many movies where his fights are great and shot very well, and he has other movies where the skill is there but the filmmaking is not on the same level. I'd also make it a point that restraint in using a fight scene or using brutality out of the gate until it's absolutely necessary for the character makes it all the more impactful. I always think of Transporter 1, where Statham is obviously shown to be a badass, but doesn't hit super hard until the bad guys blow up his car, which seriously offends him and makes us root for him to kick ass as well.

The Luke vs Vader scene carries so much weight. Even just the short clip you show in this drips with the emotion and stakes that are conveyed by their battle & dialogue. Almost brings me to tears. I think bad or mediocre films forget that all the composite parts - fight choreography, lighting & cinematography, performance - all these serve only as storytelling mechanisms. When the mechanism becomes the point rather than the story itself, the film loses its way.

I like that you talked about Return of the Jedi! I remember the Mr Plinkett Phantom Menace review where he touched on how the less-elegant less-flashy fights were all about the story and subtext or something. I think he mentioned that a very pumped up Luke, whose emotions are venturing into dangerously dark side-esque rage, absolutely would be just unrelenting in his wailing on Vader. There's no composure and cool stylised sword play but just overpowering Vader with how much fury he's striking at him with. And i do find it such a badass moment and, for me, it is more engaging than like the epic duel between Obi Wan and Anakin in episode 3 because of how much character is in it. Obviously to each their own, and i wouldn't anyone to not enjoy their favourite scenes just because of how i feel (and I'm not going to pretend that I didn't love the duel when i saw the movie), it's their right to enjoy it and I'm happy for them if it does bring joy to them. :) But, again, for me, it's a moment where you see how dangerous Luke could be if he gave in to the dark side (but of course he doesn't) and it's a shock to see cool, calm and collected terrifying Darth Vader suddenly not being in control and even collapsing to the floor, helplessly just trying to hold his lightsaber up to attempt to shield from the blows Luke is Luke-ing all over him. There's probably much cleverer things one could say about this RotJ fight but ceebs analysing it right now, I'm currently in bed at 10 p.m. procrastinating from doing the dishes

The arcane fight scene has great animation but the actual fight scene was pretty bad. Idk why people praise it, it has all of the hallmarks of "bad fight scenes". Shaky camera, a million cuts, and the worst aggressor of all, the camera/composition is WAY too zoomed in. Now, there's two reasons I can see for this: lack of good choreography and cutting down costs by zooming in to animate less. Look at any Mob Psycho 100 fight and THAT'S how an animated fight scene should truly look.

And why the fuck are you or anyone else comparing it to Atomic Blonde? That's a totally different universe. Plus, the woman was beating the men up because she had shot one of them already, and had stabbed the other. They were clearly stronger and tougher but they were taking more damage from her weapons. One of my favorite fights (besides Raid 1 and 2 main fights) are the ones from "The Night Comes For Us" which has Iko Uwais as the antagonist and the fight scenes have pretty much the essence of what Gareth Evans did in The Raid movies. Another example i can think of is Red vs Blue, it's mostly a Machinima yes, but there are certain parts of the series that were animated 3D and for the fight scenes (and i mean until Monty Oum died, who was the guy in charge of making these choreographies) were really good, and its quite amazing that very few works can be at the level of what Monty Oum did. Of course, his animations weren't perfect, rendering issues and some weird cuts that will hardly ever be noticed by the first time you watch them, and also attack moves that are just straight bullshit defying the laws of physics, but still, it is worth knowing that i was being made by an indie studio some 14 years ago and i will still say it how it amazes me that very few works can be compared to Red vs Blue fight scenes (anyone interested in checking it out, a guy made a 1 hour compilation of the action scenes in the series, just don't watch the last fights since it is where the quality dropped by a lot since the death of the main animator for these fight scenes)

I was waiting for you to mention the church scene from Kingsman. I didn't really like that movie but that fight scene should be taught in film school and I was rather disappointed you didn't go into detalis in that one. You are correct that there are jump cuts - however those are not jump cuts to hide lack of training or blows being landed because you see all of those clearly, they are there to support the kinetic chaos that ensues. The camera movement following the protagonsit, jumping together with him and dropping down when falls, the brtual violence, the music, the choreographed chaos. It is a masterclass of action scenes.

I just started playing Sifu last week and it got me to start watching my favorite Kung Fu flicks again. Just watched Oldboy last night and came to your channel (I'd only seen Vol 1 so far) to see if you had covered Oldboy --> Daredevil --> Sifu and you did! Such a perfect feeling.
@MarcusFlemmingsАй бұрын
Might be a controversial, but I think Sifu is my fave game ever!
@MitraKesavaАй бұрын
@@MarcusFlemmings I don't think that's controversal especially if you like action movies this much, it's a literal love letter to hand to hand combat films. As a longtime gamer, Sifu has quickly risen to one of my faves of all time as well. Also I know you're not big on animation but I will say that Blue Eye Samurai is an excellent companion to Sifu and has some really good fights with cinematic fluidity even for animation. "Blue eye samurai dojo gets humbled" its a really good example.
@MarcusFlemmingsАй бұрын
@@MitraKesava So I haven't got an issue with animation, per se. I just prefer live action. However, Blue Eye Samurai is incredible! I featured a clip on this video or the one before.

I dont mean this as a criticism to your overall point, but the lightsabre fight between Luke and Vader is also comparatively more dark than the rest of the movie. I think thats more of an issue of filming on actual film vs filming on digital. Love your videos, bud!

Two of my favourite fights star Benny the Jet. Wheels on Meals and Grosse Pointe Blank. One is ultimate Jackie Chan Goodness. The other is brutal and fast. They could be compared to many failed attempts at the same vibe.

If you haven't covered/seen the Korean superhero show Moving (TV, not movie, but still), there are a number of GREAT fight scenes in that show. Frank vs Naju in episode 4, Hui-so vs the 17 bullies in episode 5 (more gritty, less skill-based, but still great), Juwan vs the entire gang hallway/multi-room fight in episode 11, and basically most the fights from the end (especially episodes 18 and 19). Great series. If you haven't watched it yet, do yourself the favor.

Ahh the excellent Daredevil fight. I am so glad Daredevil is coming back, the hallway scene and prison fight scenes were some of my favorites. I also really liked Man of Steel, saw it in theaters with my dad and it was the version of Superman I had wanted to see for most of my life, and the epic fight scenes that caused so much destruction reminded me of the Doomsday vs Superman comic I grew up with and loved in the 90's. It is just too bad Zack Snyder made such a poor version of Doomsday for the big screen. Ironically Marvis Frazier was very proud of what he accomplished as a fighter and going against Tyson, he wasn't ashamed at all considering what happened, and Joe Frazier was proud of his son for doing his best and trying in boxing and getting as far as he did, considering he went against one of the greatest boxers of all time.

You missed the main point in Upgrade. The change in camera movement when Stem takes control is explained through visual language. It shows that Grey is no longer in control of himself; someone else is driving. This becomes especially clear at the very end of the film, when Stem has completely taken over.

Hey, Marcus, the scene in Matt Reeves' The Batman when ' 'Vengeance' fights those thugs on the subway platform was a great fight scene, Timothee Chalamet and Austin Butler's scene in Dune:Part 2, Bane & Batman in that underground bunker(?) in The Dark Knight Rises, Bruce Lee vs. Han in Enter the Dragon (in the mirror room), and when Hobbs and Shaw fought for the first time in Furious 7, just to name a few.
