Reminds me of a kid I coached. Had to play the exact same way Abbott did. Was young coach at the time and he always impressed me with how much he could do with 0 issues. He was a killer, doubles to the gaps when we needed a big hit and a funky left handed delivery with good speed and movement for the first time pitching from 60 feet. Never complained, always hustled. I'm sure he's killing it now too.

Call me crazy, but I think Jim Abbott should be in Baseball's HOF. This is a man WITH A DISABILITY that made it to the highest level of the sport AND was better than so many other fully abled-bodied players at his position. You can quote numbers all you want, but how many other HOF pitchers would've been able to accomplish what Jim did if they had only one hand? The fact that he had only one hand should be enough to put him in the HOF.

You’re not crazy you’re just wrong. His performance requires adding a caveat. At that point, what’s the line? Where do you draw a caveat? Is it just physical? What parts of the body? Stellar play is stellar play is stellar play. He can be a great player and not have numbers worthy of the hall . I don’t think it’s right to start caveating players based on external factors that in and of itself is a reflection of a deviation from prototypical hall worthy performance

I watched Jim Abbott pitch with my dad at Yankee stadium in '93. Managed to get there early and get his autograph before the game. It was incredible to see how fast he could switch to the defensive position after getting the pitch off. Once in a lifetime type of player

I read his book when I was a kid. It was the pinnacle "for love of the game" story. His parents tried getting him into soccer as a kid, but Jim just loved other sports and figured out a way that works for him.

My first MLB game was on Aug 23, 1991 in Anaheim. I was hoping to see Mark Langston pitch, but it was Jim Abbot and he threw an absolutely gem against the Red Sox. I became an instant fan! He has to be one of the most inspiring athletes in history.

Played with a kid in little league who lost use of his dominant throwing hand(kicked by a horse) Pete was a great batter, was a great out fielder, and yes he would field with the same hand, pinch the glove with his right arm, grab the ball and throw. He was accurate and started every game, and we all loves playing with him. He was a beast 😤

When I was growing up towards the end of Abbott's career there was a kid in my local baseball league who also had only one hand who was primarily a position player. Watching him swing a bat was always funny but he was pretty effective at it. He also managed despite only having one hand to be a decent point guard for his middle school's basketball team, was the kicker for our high school's football team (though not on kickoffs since he wouldn't be able to make a tackle), and ended up playing D2 soccer in college (where having two hands is less necessary but often important for leverage and balance for many players).

I got to go see Jim Abbott when he pitched for the Angels when I was a kid. Man he was fast. He didn't have one hand; he was a left-handed pitcher and catcher. He wasn't just an inspiration and idol to disabled little league players either, there were plenty of perfectly healthy kids who looked up to and emulated him at practice, myself included. I miss those days. Thanks for the throwback!

Either way, as a place that sells mental health wellness, it's a shady practice. They've also been known to lack a proper background check for their therapists, in the past. Again, not sure if they rectified that issue

If Jim Abbott isnt in your top 5/10 GOAT pitchers list, I’m not interested in talking to you. I don’t care about stats, or wins, or any analysis. No other pitcher on your list can claim to have dominated baseball with only one hand. No other pitcher on any list can boast about dominating despite such a career-long literal handicap, nor can any of them claim to have turned such a career-ending handicap into an incredible athletic strength. That on its own puts him on any GOAT list, regardless of stats. If he had only struck out one batter in his entire career, he’d still be on my list, because no one before or since has ever dared to do for even one day what he did every day. P.S. George Steinbrenner belongs on every person’s Worst Managers of All Time list. Jeter, Bernie, Posada, Mattingly, even Mr. October himself. They all have stories about him. And when you’re so hated by every player, you don’t get claim to be a good manager. I won’t deny the man picked good players, or that he’s missed by some, but it’s the players who built that empire. Steinbrenner shackled them every chance he got. I got to see him pitch live. Every year may family took a trip to Cleveland to watch an Indians game and the year it was my turn to pick the game, I picked one against the Angels with the hope I could see Abbott pitch, and lucky enough for me, he did pitch that game. As a side note, I was also at the game where Albert Bell famously plugged the fan with the ball, and I was only one section over from it.

As a sophomore in high school I was invited to a Dodger tryout camp in the early mid 90’s. There was a guy there who also had 1 hand and pitched. I was at all watching this guy work his glove. Compared to the other pitchers he seemed just as fast on fielding and transferring the ball.

I also had the same concerns when Abbott started his career but , fortunately he proved himself very fast. In little league I played with a kid that had a deformed arm (basically a working hand but , no arm) yet none of us kids showed favoritism and he expected none. So I knew good and well he could play. Anyone remember Jim Grey who played outfield for (I believe ) the browns.
