Fillers in the OG Naruto ain't filler for me cause they put more character to the side characters and it shows just how much Naruto actually cared for Hinata. This was the first time he went 9 tails for her.

compare it to boruto anime filler where the characters are just completely stupid and refuse to use their busted ass abilities, like goddamn sarada you're a genjutsu expert why can't you just hit this single bad guy who keeps making eye contact with your fucking sharingan and be done with it. meanwhile in the canon she literally dropped a mist village jonin the actual first time she used her sharingan in combat. smdh tl;dr: reject anime, return to manga.

at the time of the manga's publication and to an extent even now, shonen magazines don't want their main characters to have settled relationships. there's like, three pretty solid emotional arcs in the manga that clearly point towards chemistry between them but nothing is allowed to happen. naruto isn't allowed to move on from sakura no matter how much he grows or how clearly uninterested she is. hinata confesses her fucking love while selflessly sacrificing herself for him and he friendzones her for *a fucking decade*. shonen protagonists don't get gfs, especially not back then. they get the girl at the end, if it's even something the author remembered was possible.
