I'll never understand the draft best available mindset. As a buffalo fan it's so incredibly frustrating to see year after year they need to add a gritty physical player yet every year they draft the best undersized "skilled" forward available. They now have like 6 players that all play the exact same style and offense is lack luster most games. If only they had a guy throwing his body around clearing up space on the ice so the "skilled" forwards can make plays. Log jam effect is real and I think the drafting best available is a major cause to that. I strongly think draft what the team needs and have that player thrive playing a role that the team needs over being 5th in line as the "best available" maybe getting 8 minutes a night

The idea to draft the best guy available is that he'll have the highest value. If he's not an asset to the team, he can be traded for the asset you need. There is certainly logic to this, though there are practical challenges, and some teams have executed it well in the past. This video is exclusively highlighting cases where this did NOT work and the opposite was effective.

The issue with trying to emulate the VGK is that they were picking from a crop of players that were either fully or partially developed, which is not the case when you’re drafting. It allowed Vegas to better optimize for positional need. Which is why it’s ideal to go BPA when there’s a sizeable gap, and draft for positional need when 2 prospects are close. Also, drafting in the NHL is such a crapshoot because these guys are way too young. Ideally they’d be drafted between 20-22.

It's what made Sam Pollock so successful, probably the smartest GM in any sport. He took Bob Gainey with his 1st pick (8th) in 1973 causing a storm of criticism. Gainey had only 22 goals in the OHL. But he was the best all around player and ended up in the HoF, basically defined the Selke trophy.
@canuck_gamer33598 күн бұрын
Pollock was a genius. Not only did he have the best scouts and then trusted their instincts, he also knew the importance of having the best development system possible. The players would learn in the minors how the system worked, so they were prepared if/when they arrived at the NHL level. They also learned how to win, even in the minors. He did it all!

BUT I'm also sure if you check the 32 team lists of prospects, you'll find plenty of variation even in the first round.

Maybe if the Penguins drafted Kessel and paired him with a teenage Crosby, the Penguins would've been to easy to play against. As you've said, the NHL is a copycat league. Putting all of our firepower on one line would've made it to easy for other teams to defend against them (think the St Louis, Lecavalier, Richards top line in Tampa after their first cup year).

Vegas took (or lucked up by the rules) 3-4 lines of established players and had some breakouts from underutilized assets. nah, Willander is a player you can't trade for. Dependable rhd with top 2 upside never go on the market and must be drafted and developed. In today sports world Owner Management are very eager to sign players to big contracts because of one or two decent seasons ..especially when free agency hits or trade deadlines trading futures who haven't played a game with the big team. Other side of this is players who have been told they are great since Pee Wee maybe even novice and believe in it and have an agent who's job is to get them the best deal for them but then can't figure out why suddenly criticism happens, they can't play up to the expectations live up to the hype find themselves in the minors or playing in Europe KHL.

In MTL they're longing Fowlers and did the same with Primeau (but gotta admit Price cock block him for wanting a vetran as substitute). Then look Knight situation in Florida or Askarov in Nashville... But at the sametime it's such a fine (or thin?) line between you want the best rosters to compete or best draft picks. "Can't take Zibanejad off the PP because his production would suffer" that's a player first mentality, and sadly in this league, you can't win with that. What if Zibanejad's production dips, you put Laffy instead, HIS production goes up, BUT, the combined production from Zib and Laffy goes up as a result? That's still a net win. That's still a possibility to win more games. That's what should prime. In a similar discussion, those in Montreal claiming "It's about time Hutson wakes up and scores a goal" he's a rookie defenseman with 15 points on his season but no goals. He's on pace for roughly 60 points. As a ROOKIE DEFENSEMAN. Who cares if he doesn't score a goal, ends up with like 57 assists. That's still helping the team score goals and winning games, which at the end of the day, helps the team. Maybe don't buy 5 engines for the car, but if you have 2-3 to swap around depending on what you need, then the car is more likely to run smoothly overall! :)

In Montreal, a player can get ice time like there's no tomorrow, and ice time equals good stats. Yesterday Laine scored and basically 99% of Montreal media didn't mention the fact that the goalie let in a floater. I'm all for a second, ah third, well ok a forth chance 😂, but Montreal fans only know Habs hockey. They don't watch hockey games, only Habs games. It's a rebuild right? Well if you are rebuilding, you want to have the BEST coaching staff to do so, but in Montreal, you only get the french speaking coaches that want to coach there, and they have picked a pee wee coach because the best coaches didn't want to come. They are still paying 4 coaches, and will be paying a fifth, because Hall of famer Martin St Louis will be fired before the end of the season. It's a toxic environment when you don't surround yourself with the best available pieces. Laine is a very talented player, but let's not put our heads in the sand and acknowledge that no other team was shopping him, and with reason. I wish the Habs success, but let's just be serious. 70% of the team is AHL players.

You saying that Laine’s shot there was a “floater” exposes how little you understand hockey. That was a fantastic shot, what are you even on about? Marty’s not going to be fired this year either, and no, they’re not 70% AHLers. You just don’t know hockey as well as you think you do.

90% of what you said is a whole lot of bogus.

100% correct. I moved out of Montreal several years ago and stopped drinking the kool-aid. I live in South FL and started following the Panthers. Needless to say, it was an awakening. The front office’s mentality about building this team is exactly the opposite of Montreal’s antiquated ways. Panthers are skilled, but also tough as nails, big and have a lot of fuck you to their game which rattles opponents. The media here doesn’t overrate or overreact either. The vibes are just so much lighter all around. Great place to play, I can imagine.
