Another great informative video! That is one of the worst cams I had ever seen. I was lucky my stock HO cam and lifters came out looking great! However I did decide to go to an aftermarket cam. Will be saving my original stuff though. Keep them coming! 👊😎👍

@@brokentoolgarage I want to sound different. I’m going with XE-270HR Comp cam. Specs are; 270 degrees, 512 lift, 112 separation. That’s with 1.6 rockers. I purchased 1.7’s for the HO cam, I could use them but that would be .544 lift. Little too much with 2.02 valves, and unported Cobra intake. I had already purchased new scorpion 1.7’s, I ’ll either hang onto them for the stock cam, or sell them to buy 1.6. I did get forged Wiesco fly cut pistons, and forged scat connecting rods. was hoping I didn’t need to go 30 over, but old girl was wore out. The original forged pistons look great, I will hang onto them for a 351 Windsor Stroker build in the future. I have to rebalance for Pistons, so might as well get good rods. Aftermarket rods have the larger rod bolts. My 70 Mach1 has XE 284, XE retain a lot of vacuum. The 284 has 14 inches. I used to have a 280 magnum in the past, it had only 9 inches. So hopefully I can retain a lot of vacuum with the 5.0! Cost me more money to switch gears in the middle of the build. A definite no no! 😆

I'm assuming the flat tappet lifters last longer but cams on roller cars last longer

I got the stock solid flat tappet lifters in the slant 6 (1977). Good oil and changes makes the difference

I know youre supposed to keep cam/lifters together. I had mine all set to reinstall on an 89 5.0 chevy 305. Its a roller cam and both cam and lifters were in good shape. I accidentally knocked over the tray that had the lifters in the correct order. What would you say about putting them back in? Are roller lifters more forgiving than flat ones on a cam? I was really trying to keep this real low buck clean and reinstall. So besides the usual dont bother with a 305, would you take a chance on putting them back in? I wouldnt on a flat hydraulic lifter but thinking a roller lifter might be ok until I save up to put in a 350 or LS swap it.. Any thoughts?? 10 years ago when a cam/lifter set was only $150-200 I might cosnsider replacing but now its like $500!! Really annoyed at myself for doing this!!

Thanks for dropping by. The roller will be okay. Just make sure they don't have rust pits and roll freely. That is the benefit to the roller. I get you on the whole "roller" thing. It's like they add $200-300 for the word "roller." Personally, I would stick to a good 350. You can get used parts for those to save a buck too

@@brokentoolgarage thanks for the reply. I would so mad that tray fell over! And I get it on the 350. I don't have one of those though. And even buying one around here on Eastern Long Island people want $1,000 for anything that's in good shape and running. I can find a rebuildable one for 5 to 600 but I'm really just trying to keep costs down and get this thing back on the road until I can come up with a plan to redo everything. Like I said, the cam and roller lifters are in pretty good shape. I would never reuse flat tappet hydraulic lifters that weren't matched to the cam. But I was thinking roller lifters would be a little more forgiving if you reuse them out of order.

@@pdlegend6829 You are welcome! Yeah, it stinks when stuff like that happens, but it should be okay. Look up some David Vizard on your 305 build. You may be surprised what you can do on the cheap and get performance.

The stock Ford cam cores are very high quality and great to use for performance regrinding. The hardening does not "wear out". Your cam could most likely be reground and you'd end up with a cam that's far superior to an aftermarket one ground on a SADI core.

Thanks. I thought about that, but it is the non-HO firing order 🙁
@DaveMcLain
@DaveMcLain Жыл бұрын
The non HO is the most desirable factory core. It has a lobe separation that's much more optimum for performance use. Firing order makes no difference in performance. @@brokentoolgarage

Oh yeah, I like the LSA. Went to the explorer cam which is similar other than they went wide on the LSA and 351 F.O. I would like to test that against the HO cam and then a "real" cam

@@brokentoolgarage As far as I know there are about 3 or 4 different cams used in these engines. This is data from cams that I've plotted: Car non HO 181/195@.050 on 108, truck 5.0(351w FO) 187/197 on 115, HO 5.0 car 210/210 on 115 in on 112. Not sure about the stock 351w in a truck. Does it use the HO 5.0 cam or is it different?

@@DaveMcLain It is the 5.0 explorer cam - same as the truck cam you have data on. It is cool you plotted those. I want to do the same thing
