For anyone wondering.. the speakers are quite impressive. I still sometimes think someone is knocking on my door or ringing the doorbell if I’m watching a show that has it. It sounds natural.. no tinny or muffled audio. For the size I’m not sure they could have done any better.

My Dell Latitude E6420 from 2012 finally died early 2021. I went to Best Buy thinking I’ll spend $1000 on a PC as a placeholder til I find something I love. The MacBook Air M1 was $899 and bested every PC under $1500 and had wayyyy better build quality. I took a chance. Long story short, it’s no placeholder.. it’s the nicest machine I have ever had. The M1 Air is truely THE ultrabook, one that managed to strike the perfect balance between lightweight design and performance, and one that many Windows competitors once dreamed of making (even Apple themselves with the 12” Macbook), the only thing that were keeping them from doing so was Intel and their power-hungry chips 😂 And that’s not to mention the student-friendliness and the almost-impossible battery life, say what you want about Apple but they really outdid themselves and the laptop industry with this machine right here.

I just bought a framework laptop to use as my main coding laptop, and I have an refurbished m1 to use as my home laptop for IOS development. In 5 years when the M1 refurbished air is no longer supported, I'll get another refurbished laptop. When it comes to apple products, its best to spend as little as possible. So if things break you haven't lost much. In contrast, framework laptops are fully repairable. So there's far less reason not to invest more in it. If the screen on my framework 13 breaks, I don't have to spend 1300 dollars on a new computer or spend 400 dollars for an apple store repair. Instead I can buy a new screen for 160 dollars. And the new screen will be an upgrade in fidelity. Since every framework repair is also an upgrade. As the newer parts will be better parts. If you're a app developer, then I can't recommend framework laptops enough. Apple products are still a necessity for mobile app development. But there's no point in splurging on a glorified IOS dev platform.

They definitely should've used a better display. It's impressive what they were able to accomplish with a first generation product. Mind you they've had a number of years to tune their own SOCs. And while there were some initial issues with programs being converted onto arm, by this point all of those issues have been taken care of. One thing that's fascinating about this particular laptop is you can go pick it up brand new for around 6:50 or refurbished around 400. That's an insane value despite it being 4 years old. There are good systems at or around that price. But unless you're mainly focusing on gaming or need a windows computer for specific programs, there's really not much that can compete with this it's mighty impressive what Apple was able to accomplish with this machine.

It’s not far from possible. Main issues are the display connection and the ports being in all the wrong places. The body of any unibody would be deadweight though if you think about it… no use for the speakers, battery, any of the SSD/CD drive space.

The m1 MacBook Pro was Apple being scared apple silicon wasn’t going to get adopted fast enough. So they gave their lowest end users an actual upgrade in most ways to their previous models. Since then they raised prices on everything. That’s typical apple. They are back to hobbling the lowest end, punishing people who don’t want to give them all their money.

The m1 macbooks are so good that apple struggled to sell people on the newer releases because why upgrade when you can do the exact same thing on your current one while not needing to pay an outrages price. As a computer science major I was concerned there would be something that would take a long time on this laptop but nope, it flies through VS Code and Xcode like nothing. I got my m1 air for $700 with 16gb of ram and 1tb of storage refurbished, theres no need to get anything more.

Everyone talking about how great the M1 Air is, but my experience was ruined by mine being owned by my school. Those knuckleheads got the thing with 128 gigs of storage, which caused me to run into storage troubles a few months in (this is just about the 4th year of having it). Even after clearing all my apps off of it (that I can, such as MS office), I still get 13 gigabytes free, with nothing more, no matter how much I take off (it always ends up settling, like I'll wake up from clearing 5 gigabytes and it mysteriously disappears, putting me back to 13). The thing also thermal throttles as soon as one of the performance cores kick in, jumping into the 80s and 90s whenever any real work needs to be done (since when was "Roblox" considered intense?). The lack of ports also means that I've needed to purchase dongles, with my external displays hardly being supported as a result. By the way, the computer is my own, being paid for with my tuition (so it's not "oh well it's the school's computer, so it's their decision"). The puny storage and MacOS have made my switch to pc (such as my finder no longer finding, and my mail no longer letting me search through emails, for example).

As a tech enthusiast, I've always been curious to get around to trying out a modern Mac, as I like try to be at least somewhat literate in as much as possible. It's just a bit hard to stomach the high prices and locked down nature of the hardware. I could deal with the soldered RAM, but the soldered SSDs are the hard no for me, as that's a wear item that will eventually fail. The new ARM powered Macs look very enticing, but I can't justify getting something so expensive that I can't continually upgrade/repair to keep running for as long as possible to get my money's worth.

you may have, and I just totally missed it, but I think you really should've touched on battery life, I am currently using an i7 16 inch 2019 MacBook Pro, about 100 battery cycles, I get on a good day maybe 8-9 hours of pages/schoolwork, if im editing videos, music, or anything more intensive, it drops to probably at best about 4-5 hours. my moms MacBook Air m1 is rated for 18 hours, it has about 350 battery cycles on it, and will constantly get 14-16 hours doing the mundane stuff like pages and web browsing/video streaming. if I edit videos, music, or just do more intense stuff on that, its slower, but the battery life is about 8-10 hours depending on how intense it is. I feel like the best part of the M1 is simply how middle of the road everything is, the CPU is just fine, the GPU is just fine, the screen is just fine, the speakers are phenomenal, the battery life is superb, and its on par with 13th gen mobile i5 CPU's... but still has better battery life

I've had an iBook 12" 2004, a 2007 MBP 13" Retina thingy, a 2013 MBP 13" Retina thingy, and most recently a 2022 MBA 13" M2 thingy. That's roughly one laptop every 5 years for the last two decades. This is where Apple's bloated prices are destroyed. Nothing ever went wrong, nothing broke, they just got old and needed to be upgraded. My 2013 MBP is still used daily as a secondary laptop for TV streaming.

I'm watching this video on the M1 Air. Now, despite owning an M1 MacBook Pro 14-inch, I ended up buying a MacBook Air M1. It was more of a spontaneous buy, as the price on Amazon dropped to as low as $800 last November. Besides, I wanted something that was lighter, which the Air certainly is and I always liked the wedge design; a form factor that Apple has abandoned on the latest Air. I knew Apple wasn't going to keep it around for much longer. In my opinion, the final versions of old laptops are generally the best. I can say this as I still have a functioning fully-spec'd out 13-inch Unibody MacBook Pro, as a third computer and it's still working just fine, nearly eight years after I bought it. Just like the M1 Air, I got the Unibody in 2016, when it was being phased out. That deal was even better at just $576.

Apple Silicon really had the laptop industry and Intel in shambles lmao. If it wasn't for the Apple engineers leaving to make the Snapdragon X chips, Apple Silicon would've still been years ahead of everything else in the market. Truly was ahead of its time, and still the most fine tuned, optimized, and best laptop to get for under 700. I hope Apple still continues to push these chips out like crazy so the used market for M2/M1 Pro can start to drop.

The M1 is a great machine (the GF has one I bought her for Xmas 2022). The rant embedded here seems about a year behind though - Apple has actually come out in support of right-to-repair. Of course they don't build their machines with the expectation that most of their users will NEED to fix them, and my track record with Windows boxes has led me to prefer the computer that's built to last in the first place, even if it means I can't dig around the insides all by myself (which the vast majority of people wouldn't do even if they could).

title is correct. the reason why this is so great because of Intel who intentionally slacked their using 14nm for years. Apple took the problem on their own hands and made a more powerful chip using the experience from making smartphones SoCs. Small issue with using Arm or smartphone chip to a laptop is software. Apple simply solved this app(chicken egg) problem by offering the M1 Air at an aggressive price (consider M1 is using the cutting edge chip manufacturing process while AMD/Intel one two generations behind) so that adoption skyrockets despite some apps not ready for primetime. The rest is history where Apple makes small iterations to the M chips at increasing prices yearly (goodbye to good value of M products). It's not so bad if you can go with AMD or Intel laptops these days as they have better value laptops recently
