Dude, the screen isn't "incredible" it's just ok. It's not super bright and has a low screen response time, so there's a fair amount of ghosting on darker backgrounds. They definitely should've used a better display. The M1 Air is easy to use, however it can get pretty frustrating at times due to the limitations of the OS; it's definitely way more limited than Windows, not to mention the fact that macOS has had a choppy scrolling bug for a few years. It's impressive what they were able to accomplish with a first generation product. Mind you they've had a number of years to tune their own SOCs. And while there were some initial issues with programs being converted onto arm, by this point all of those issues have been taken care of. One thing that's fascinating about this particular laptop is you can go pick it up brand new for around 6:50 or refurbished around 400. That's an insane value despite it being 4 years old. There are good systems at or around that price. But unless you're mainly focusing on gaming or need a windows computer for specific programs, there's really not much that can compete with this it's mighty impressive what Apple was able to accomplish with this machine.

Everyone talking about how great the M1 Air is, but my experience was ruined by mine being owned by my school. Those knuckleheads got the thing with 128 gigs of storage, which caused me to run into storage troubles a few months in (this is just about the 4th year of having it). Even after clearing all my apps off of it (that I can, such as MS office), I still get 13 gigabytes free, with nothing more, no matter how much I take off (it always ends up settling, like I'll wake up from clearing 5 gigabytes and it mysteriously disappears, putting me back to 13). The thing also thermal throttles as soon as one of the performance cores kick in, jumping into the 80s and 90s whenever any real work needs to be done (since when was "Roblox" considered intense?). The lack of ports also means that I've needed to purchase dongles, with my external displays hardly being supported as a result. By the way, the computer is my own, being paid for with my tuition (so it's not "oh well it's the school's computer, so it's their decision"). The puny storage and MacOS have made my switch to pc (such as my finder no longer finding, and my mail no longer letting me search through emails, for example).

I could deal with the soldered RAM, but the soldered SSDs are the hard no for me, as that's a wear item that will eventually fail. The new ARM powered Macs look very enticing, but I can't justify getting something so expensive that I can't continually upgrade/repair to keep running for as long as possible to get my money's worth.

I'm using an M2 Pro 14" MBP on the daily right now, but you're definitely fair, the Air was great, even though I find that the first AS MBPs were probably an even bigger upgrade.

I've had an iBook 12" 2004, a 2007 MBP 13" Retina thingy, a 2013 MBP 13" Retina thingy, and most recently a 2022 MBA 13" M2 thingy. That's roughly one laptop every 5 years for the last two decades. This is where Apple's bloated prices are destroyed. Nothing ever went wrong, nothing broke, they just got old and needed to be upgraded. My 2013 MBP is still used daily as a secondary laptop for TV streaming.

Yeah the anti-repair-sh*t Apple is forcing on us is actually one of the biggest reasons I'm considering other brands in the future for all of my devices.

I just bought a framework laptop to use as my main coding laptop, and I have an refurbished m1 to use as my home laptop for IOS development. In 5 years when the M1 refurbished air is no longer supported, I'll get another refurbished laptop. When it comes to apple products, its best to spend as little as possible. So if things break you haven't lost much. In contrast, framework laptops are fully repairable. So there's far less reason not to invest more in it. If the screen on my framework 13 breaks, I don't have to spend 1300 dollars on a new computer or spend 400 dollars for an apple store repair. Instead I can buy a new screen for 160 dollars. And the new screen will be an upgrade in fidelity. Since every framework repair is also an upgrade. As the newer parts will be better parts. If you're a app developer, then I can't recommend framework laptops enough. Apple products are still a necessity for mobile app development. But there's no point in splurging on a glorified IOS dev platform.

Another one with the "anty repair" song. Your monitor, your TV, your toaster, your microwave oven; Do you think they are repairable? I also don't see anyone complaining that access to the engine is restricted in the new Porsches. What are you going to do? You are going to take your 4-year-old iPhone to be repaired so they can charge you 25% less than the value of the phone. That "anti repair" thing is being adopted by other companies. So stop the drama.
@robertkeaney99053 ай бұрын
@@peter_shadow7559 The idea is that iPhones should be more repairable. So you can do it yourself, without having to pay 25% less than the value of your iPhone for it to be repaired. Things can be better. Why does that make you angry?
@vinicius464able3 ай бұрын
@@peter_shadow7559 I actually already reaiped myself both my TV and my Microwave oven once, but anyway, Apple makes their devices to be able to make a fool of people charging a lot more for RAM and Storage than it is worth in the market, and i don't wanna feel like a clown

now imagine someone would do something magical that enables us to retrofit an M1 board to the unibody macbooks
@montaguebarnabasltd5 ай бұрын
It’s not far from possible. Main issues are the display connection and the ports being in all the wrong places. The body of any unibody would be deadweight though if you think about it… no use for the speakers, battery, any of the SSD/CD drive space.

I'm watching this video on the M1 Air. Now, despite owning an M1 MacBook Pro 14-inch, I ended up buying a MacBook Air M1. It was more of a spontaneous buy, as the price on Amazon dropped to as low as $800 last November. Besides, I wanted something that was lighter, which the Air certainly is and I always liked the wedge design; a form factor that Apple has abandoned on the latest Air. I knew Apple wasn't going to keep it around for much longer. In my opinion, the final versions of old laptops are generally the best. I can say this as I still have a functioning fully-spec'd out 13-inch Unibody MacBook Pro, as a third computer and it's still working just fine, nearly eight years after I bought it. Just like the M1 Air, I got the Unibody in 2016, when it was being phased out. That deal was even better at just $576.

The M1 Air is truely THE ultrabook, one that managed to strike the perfect balance between lightweight design and performance, and one that many Windows competitors once dreamed of making (even Apple themselves with the 12” Macbook), the only thing that were keeping them from doing so was Intel and their power-hungry chips 😂 And that’s not to mention the student-friendliness and the almost-impossible battery life, say what you want about Apple but they really outdid themselves and the laptop industry with this machine right here.

From an IT pov it’s been awesome. You can say what you will about ewaste and the ability to repair/replace components individually and I will hear those. But these things last. I see another 4 years before cpu performance falls. Another 2 before batteries die. Tell me, how long has it been since the main concern is the battery? The m2/m3 air had a significantly more attractive look. But, at an additional cost of 100/200 dollars. Sub 1000 is just unbeatable for a pro performance and a GEN FREACKING 1 M1 air. Now we will see windows arm shine. I’m skeptical what prism will offer as opposed to Rosetta 2. And the fact I haven’t seen a sub 1000$ snapdragon SOC from any of the lead providers (MS, Lenovo, Dell) leaves me worried that windows will struggle to keep up in the workplace. We need a premium option at the pivotal price point. The shell of the machine matters to most. looks, durability, and performance matter equally. So yeah, I don’t expect there to be another laptop like the M1 air. Great take of yours

Yeah, the Snapdragon Elite X/Plus laptops with Windows are a first-gen products, and I very much doubt in the wild success of that, given Microsoft’s track record. Apple’s M1 succeeded because Apple spent a lot of years behind the curtains preparing for this shift.

I recently bought a 17 inch 2008 MacBook Pro, 2.4 GHz., core 2 duo, 8 gig of ram., I installed a 240 gig ssd., and I then installed Linux Mint Mate and the laptop currently works very well. The design of the laptop is good except that it only has two USB., ports and they are both on the same side and to apply new thermal paste to the processor the logic board has to be removed.

I bought one of these about a month ago in near mint condition and like 95% battery health for 500 euros. Although hesitant to be buying a 4 year old laptop, once I got it in my hands I felt like I just robbed someone for what I paid for it. Light yet rigid and durable. Great screen that's super easy on the eyes. Fantastic speakers for a laptop that size. Quick and snappy in almost every task. What a truly great little machine. Apple knocked it out of the park with the M1 air. I believe it's still worth buying in 2024 if you can get for like below 650 dollars or euros.
