Germany is an incredible country of rich culture, amazing industrial strength, an unmistakable history of design innovation, and an amazing attention to detail to anything they make. It is precisely for these reasons, among many others that makes them a tour de force when it comes to making some of the best watches from affordable to ultra luxury. Often overlooked by the mainstream watch buying public, Germany is a super power horologically. In today's WWT (Wrist Watch Talk) episode I discuss 5 of my personal favourites from the many fantastic brands I love and explain why I will always have a German made watch in my collection.
For a geographic overview of Germany and it's 80+ watchmakers click here:

TGV, I've watched your channel for awhile now but just recently subscribed. Thank you for your fantastic in depth reviews of so much variety in manufactures, levels of affordability and tastes. You truly hit all the key points in your videos in what a horological aficionado or a first time buyer/collector looks for. I can admit before I purchase a new addition, I always view your channel first. Top notch channel good sir! Thank you!

Not fan of German watches with maybe small exception of Sinn. However, I do like your educational videos and I always learn new things and I thank you for hard work in doing great research. BIG LIKE as always. (I just spent some time watching your videos on Seamaster 300 ceramic, co-axial) I often use your reviews as reference point.

I have really enjoyed your videos more and more Sir. Very well done. It is easy to find 'the standard' video for product reviews and history. Cars have them, firearms have them, and you sir are becoming the standard for watch videos. I have recently discovered the German watching making swarm of amazing time pieces. I started watching your videos only to learn you have had many of my own watches. First Omega in Space, check, black bay 36, check. I have a couple of hamiltons and even a Chris Ward. However your review of the Sinn 104 had captivated me. I also really appreciate your passion for history and WW2 war fighting hardware. The F4U Corsair is probably my all time most favorite aircraft ever made. Such beauty and focus of purpose. You keep up the good work sir. I purchased my first German watch (a Junkers 150 Hugo Junkers special) because of the Bauhaus video you did. I am pleased and pained by how much money your channel has cost me :) Anyway, keep up the wonderful videos and stay true to your style and let your personality show.

Interesting video - I really like these historical/educational videos. Keep 'em coming. Interesting choices for your top 5 too. Was a bit surprised A Lange & Sohne or Glashutte Original didn't make it. I have a German made watch but the design and style is decidedly not Germanic (in my opinion) that would be my Alexander Shorokhoff. Ciao, John.

the Bauhaus Junghans... absolutely jaw dropping. I love it. I can't even describe it, there's just something magical about that simplistic design and finish. Great video TGV, as always - I've said it before - you speak with true passion. Now, I have to say, while I think you've put up a great list of German brands, I am a bit saddened not to see Dugena in here. Mainly because I have one of their pieces, but they do have an interesting, 100 year old history behind them I believe. On the other hand, most of them do, right? :) Anyway, thanks for the video and keep it real, Fratello! :)

While talking about Medieval Era and Renaissance. Take a look at the interior mechanic of a German Schnäpper hunting crossbow. Looks like a goddamn Tourbillon movement. It was to reduce the trigger weight. Even a 900lbs crossbow could be operated by a child's finger.

Jose Javier Gallardo Velasquez: I second that - Damasko watches are superb performers - my DC 66 Si is still my most robust and accurate mechanical watch. Even after 3 years of pretty much non-stop use, the case shows no scratches, dings or swirlies and the accuracy of the watch exceeds COSC specifications being in the range of less than +/- 1 second per day. @Tristano: you should definitely take a look at Damasko - Sinn may offer some watches that are more appealing to the the eye, however from a technological and from a mechanical standpoint, I would pick a Damasko over a Sinn any time, provided you are looking for a real tool watch.

In my humble opinion A Lange & Söhne manufactures the best watches in the world. I was suprised that the brand didn't make it into your list :D. Everything is state of the art without exception, they make the most beautiful movements and the dials are minimalistic, symmetrical and also simply beatiuful. One day I will hopefully own a Lange, my grail watch is a Saxonia Annual Calendar.

Tristano , how about Lang&Heyne ? They are a german manufacturer based in Dresden I believe,(where Lange was founded) born in 2001 , with an annual production of 50 pieces made by 15 watchmakers they really craft some classical and very high end products with some very nice hand decorated movements too

I love the Graf Zeppelin Hindenburg LZ129 with the cream dial. I know it has a borrowed heritage (as all Pointec brands seem to have) but they nailed it with the aesthetic of old scientific instruments. I also hate to admit that the Miyota movement gives it an Axis Powers connection, albeit unfairly, and appeals to the closet war fetishist somewhere inside me.

It's the same thing for stringed instruments! Everyone wants an Italian violin and a French bow to pair, but I've got a violin made by Sebastian Klotz in Mittenwald (1773) and a bow by Albert Nurnberger in Markneukirchen (late 1920s) and they're absolutely fantastic (violinists like Heifetz and Oistrakh always had a Nurnberger in rotation). Both of those towns are famous for their instruments just as Glashutte is famous for their watches!

Brands like Fricker, Ickler, Damasko have built cases for many German brands and also many ultra dive watch micro brands. Here are a few companies that have used Fricker cases, Junghans, Kobold, Muhle, Oris, Sinn, RGM, Jorg Schauer (Stowa), Tutima, & Timefactors out of England (Think Dreadnought).. Greetings from an ex-pat living in Germany! Here in Berlin I often see adverts for the brand "Askania." It is a beautiful German watch with a retro look that has been produced in Berlin since 1871. They often remind me of the old film sets of Fritz Lang's "Metropolis." Their Aviator watches I find especially beautiful. Does anyone know if these have made it to the North American market?

The Sinn Catalog is the best of I encountered to date. It is CASEBOUND and so heavy that you can murder one with it. It is just as high quality as their watches and does put many brands of the "establishment" to shame in this regard.

Great video, thanks. One thing though, because I've seen you mention Nomos a lot of times and it seems to me you don't know the full story: Nomos were founded in 1990 in Glashütte, which was right after the fall of the Berlin Wall, but that's of course not a coincidence. During the Communist era, East Germany nationalised all watchmaking brands in Glashütte (which was within their territory), so after the fall of the Berlin Wall, either traditional old brands were re-founded (like A. Lange & Söhne) or new brands were created from the Glashütte watchmaking staff and using Glashütte workshops and expertise (like Nomos).

nice job, Guv'nor. I think you nailed it pretty nicely. Any German watch aficionado would agree with these brands being quite typical. As somebody said already, you may have wanted to highlight A.Lange more, considering that you make nice links to industrial history and to mentality. For me, as a German, there is no other company that symbolizes in its purest, almost fanatical form, this "German" tradition of technology and precision more than A. Lange watches. In comparison, our car companies are toy manufacturers. BTW: I'm sure some people would like to know what Sinn (and others) are doing to "boost" ETA works.Stuff for another video. Last but not least, for those interested in Nomos: You absolutely have to try one on. The Cordovan straps (horse leather) have a unique feel on the wrist which is addictive. After some research I can say that you will hardly find a more affordable watch with an in-house mechanism like the Nomos Club. "Cheap" would be a wrong term here, I just mentioned it, since it is known that many watch lovers like more individuality than mere ETA.

As temped as i've been i just can't seem to pull the trigger on a German piece. Perhaps one day in the future i may change my mind as the Glashutte Sixties Collection in particular has really caught my eye.

Great, governor! I feel like German watches have that something that sets them apart. If you'll make a follow-up to this episode, I hope you'll talk about Laco! Their 36mm Deauville marine watch is my next target.

A nice affordable German brand that gets little notice is Limes. They have several models that really are fantastic for what they cost. I've had a Limes Integral for almost 14 years, and it has performed wonderfully.

A very well considered topic in the World of watches, German watches are under appreciated I do agree. I have just started to explore them and just acquired a Laco (they are in Pforzheim since 1925) Flieger watch, a bit less expensive and simpler than the Stowa model but a similar automatic. Like Stowa, they also produced for the Luftwaffe back then. Maybe some other country based watch reviews would be an idea (Russian, French, British, Italian and perhaps Chinese as they evolve so very fast)?

Please feel free to email them about the channel if you have a spare 5 mins, always helps. You would be surprised how many brand actually have lent watch for review because of this. Best regards, TGV

You have just enforced my decision to add a German watch next into my collection! Wonderfully entertaining and informative video TGV. The struggle is to make a selection between the Junghans Max Bill Automatic and the Stowa Marine Original Roman. They are so different, I should have both, but alas...time is money. ;-)

What I don't understand at the german watch industry: There are so many great watch brands, but no company for movements. All are using ETA, Sellita, Miota, Seiko. Of course except the inhouse movements of brands as like Nomos and S. Lange & Söhne. It would be great to see someday a german watch movement company. Some competition is always good.

I have a Meistersinger 1z Mechanik. Of all my watches it gets commented on the most. It is also a very well made watch. I just sent it for its service ... after about 12 years. They have a new dual barrel model that is in-house and a super nice piece. My favorite German watches Glashutte Original, and Mulhe Glashutte. GO being the high end makes high horology pieces that rival the Swiss ...I have owned a GO Sport Evolution, and it was a great watch. The Muhle Glashutte watches are great too, fine workmanship, easy to read ... have Teutonia and a City. Both great watches and very accurate.

As always, great video. I really appreciate the time you invest in your research. I'm a huge German watch fan. My daily wearer is a Damasko DA36 (w/ a factory custom red seconds hand) on bracelet. I love their utilitarian approach. Being the former case supplier for Sinn, as well as their history with precision metal machining translates to impeccably made robust tool watches. Their bracelet is a stunning example of their engineering and manufacturing capabilities. Their new technologies and rethinking how things are done will surly cement them in the annals of horological history.

So does Rolex. Hans Wilsdorf was the German watchmaker who founded Rolex in 1905 at the age of 24 and in 1908 registered the trademark "Rolex" and moved his business later from Germany to Geneva Switzerland.

Only one to add to that list - Damasko - the work they have done on their innovaations defies belief. The nickel free ice hardened steel they use for everything from the crown to the case, the self lubricating crown, the anti magnetic movement cage - the list goes on and on. I believe they also only make around a 1000 watches a year so getting your hands on one can be tricky - but worth the hunt. I have one en route from a guy in Sweden right now - let me know if you want pics.

I like the toolish aspect of german watches. I wore a Junghans Long before I got into watches as a Hobby, and currently I'm looking into Sinn or Stowa. My obvious choice would If course be the 104, but my wife pointed me into direction of the 556 ever since the Sinn catalouge arrived. Lately I'm having a crush on the Stowa Flieger Ikarus. So I will see what it my next bigger purchase will be.
