I have that exact Seiko watch which was given to me by my parents in 1973 for my college graduation. It did not work for years despite numerous attempts to shake it and get the second hand to move. My father passed away in 2002. A few weeks after his death, I picked it up and it was ticking away although running very slow. No shaking it to get it going. It was just ticking. I had it tuned and cleaned by Seiko recently and it is now accurate to about 3 second per day. I believe my parents bought it at JC Penney's for $50. Just had to share this story.

I understand the sentimental value of your watch, I keep a Zenith which was bought by my grandfather during the early sixties and after he passed away it was carried by my father for the rest of his life. I don't dare to carry everyday because for me it is too precious and I wouldn't want to damage or loose it in a bathroom (almost impossible to be robbed in Spain). I have got it serviced twice since then, just to keep it in perfect order. For each of those oilings and inspections I could have purchased a brand new watch, even automatic, but for me that Zenith is the most important watch in the world.

So that's a great compliment too! #1 new watch under $50 for me is my Vostok Amphibia. It's all I wore for weeks after I got it. Practically indestructible, thoroughly waterproof and quite handsome as well. #2 is my Timex Weekender Chronograph in the the reverse panda color scheme. I paid $45 for it new, delivered from Amazon. true it's nearly impossible to read the time indoors with the black on clack hands, but outdoors it's quite legible, and supercool looking anywhere. #3 are my HMT watches from India, in particular my favorite, the Jawan military pilot-style watch with black dial and big 3, 6, 9, 12 hand lettered in lume. And I regulated it to less than a minute of accuracy per day. Thanks for the videos!

I just love that Timex. So classy without being unnecessarily expensive. You can find great pieces even cheaper, if you go outside the well known brands. There are many nice swiss watches rebranded for a local wholesaler. In the 60's and 70's they had quite decent movements, often A. Schild. Also forgotten Swiss brands offer great finds. From my collection I could choose 5 very nice watches, Sigma, Leopard, Poljot, Molnija and Citizen for the grand total of 87 €.

My issue with those Casio watches is that these days they are chrome plated over copper plated plastic. I've had loads of Casios and the modern 'metal' ones look tatty in no time as the plating comes off. I have a lot of vintage ones but dont like wearing them too much because they mean too much to me. I really really wish Casio made retro digitals with high quality stainless cases and bracelets, I would easily pay £100+ for one. Some really nice finds, the first Seiko and the Timex are beautiful. Great video as always

I felt the same as you but still had to get these beautiful vintage pieces they keep making like the a700, a158, and a168. Now looking at a world time and a G Shock square the gwm6510 solar, atomic clock etc.. it's a look alike from '85 but w/technology😍 -i just basically try to take care of them so they don't scratch up you know.

Been on a buying foray. Bought a Casio MDV 106 diver, too big for my tiny wrists. Three NATOs for it. A Bulova 96b 104 dress, about four LL Beans, two DOA, a Swatch red band irony, Seiko 5 SNK809, Citizen BM810-03 E. And last but not least a vintage Hamilton wind up from the fifties with an ETA Swiss 17 jewel movement. When will it stop? I killed three of those old Timex watches "fixing" them. And have most of your $50 collection. Running well and looking good is my fathers old 1953 high school graduation Bulova self wind. Wear it a lot!

I really enjoyed this video it was very informative. I was quite surprised recently when looking out for a dive watch on Amazon UK and I came across one at less than £50 so looked into it further. It is a watch made by Casio and is the model MTD-1053D and is priced at just over £40. Unlike most dive watches it comes at around 40mm with a 22mm lug width but this watch also has a 200M water resistance which I found incredible at this price range. I incidently have not seen this in any jewellers here in the UK, but while on holiday in Malta early December found one on display in a shop in Valletta. I asked to see it and fell in love with it straight away and purchased it. It was priced at 63 Euros but as I purchased it on a Black Friday Deal I got it for 41 Euros. It comes in two different colour dials, either in black or in blue, I purchased the black dial but on return to the UK purchased the blue version from Amazon which came in at £43.99. It is a quartz movement and the lume is quite good. The bracelet is good quality and is brushed stainless steel and also polished edges. The bezel is fully functioning and rotates anti clockwise and is very solid when set. It has a screw in crown for the water resistance. The glass is scratch resistant mineral. The packaging is the standard blue cardboard which I have had with other Casio watches in my collection. The guarantee is for 2 years and the jewellers informed me the battery should last 2 to 3 years before changing. Definately a watch worth reviewing if you come across it. Casio are on a winner with this watch I think. Thanks again for your video on watches below $50.

I really wish you could see what I got today- a stainless case, fully working, mens Omega Swiss quartz day date watch from the 70's. All original and for 30 dollars. I'm still so happy about that one. Also scored a 1960s 'Continental' Swiss 21 jewel automatic with day date for under 50 dollars with the same shimmering silver face as your Timex. And an 'Arlaska' 17 jewel Swiss automatic army watch, metallic blue face, cushion shaped case, (with subdials!!), for 35 dollars. And an 'Envoy' 25 jewel Swiss watch with day date, stainless band + case and shimmery teal dial and white seconds marker ring for 40 dollars. Terrific video, TGV! I particularly liked that Timex self wind. I've been collecting these little mechanical gems the last couple of year and I'm completely hooked. By the way, I think the one you showed might actually be a Timex 31 movement. Just below the 6 o'clock position, the four numbers to the left show the Timex catalog number (4014, 4017, etc). The four to the right indicate the movement number and year, with the first digits signifying the movement and the last 2 digits the year (e.g. 3163 = 31 movement and 1963). I joined an online Timex aficionado group last year and one of the old timers explained it to me, so I'm paying it forward. Cheers!

Few suggestions for a nice collection of watches each costing around $50: Casio G-Shock DW5600E ($45 on Amazon), Timex Digital Classic ($24 on amazon), vintage Favre Leuba Sea-King ($30 - $50 ebay and it's Swiss made), Seiko 5 snk ($55 on amazon), Vostok Komandirskie ($50 on amazon) and the list can go on infinitely. I've built my collection essentially exactly like this video and with many of the watches I've listed above. For those of us without the money to play the luxury game, you can still have a ton of fun and have some very significant timepieces.

If you want a slightly larger more robust feeling digital watch Pulsar offers the pw3001 and pw3003. They have solid metal cases and feel a little more "real" than the casio offerings. They also accept nato straps as intended; 20 mm size. The casios you generally need to force the spring bars on to get a nato strap on them.

I bought one of those exact timex watch at the base PX in Vietnam in 1967. I lost it in the brush while on a S & D patrol. The leather band broke and I didn't even feel it fall of my wrist. I'm a old guy now and have a timex indigo on my wrist right now. I have a sixties model rolex daydate in SS which I don't wear as much as the timex. I put a spidel stretch band on it. It's a throw on and go. There used to be a TV commercial that said Timex, takes a licking and keeps on ticking. You ever seen one of those commercials? I also remember coming back to the states and saw my first color TV in person at my grandparents house.

Dear TGV, thanks a lot for another great video. I totally agree that many fashion watches just don't give you your money's worth and you end up paying more for the name than anything else. However I was wondering what you think of Fossil as a brand for automatic watches. Years ago, when I was still very much ignorant and uninformed my wife bought me the ME3081 Fossil Modern Machine. It's a beast of a watch both in diameter and weight, but it doesn't look too bad on my wrist if I do say so myself. Apart from the looks, to each his own right, I was wondering what you think of the price and if it is reasonable for what you get. At the time I think she paid the equivalent of around $170. I'm sure it doesn't use a Swiss movement or Japanese for that matter, but I'm really curious what you think. Thanks for educating me this far, if only I knew then what I know now...

What do you think about an older Hamilton from the 1950s or 1960s. Got a nice one on ebay for around $60. Came on a new 16mm leather croc type Hadley Roma. Have a 1953 Bulova automatic also 16mm. Was my father's high school graduation present. Had it serviced in 1982 and still runs well. Having fun switching bands about 5 different Hadley Roma leather ones and a couple of NATO bands to change out with them too. The Hammy has been about 2 minutes a week off with a Swiss 671 manual wind. Letting the Casio f91w and G Shock rest and picked up a couple of LL Bean field watches for work beaters. I understand they were made by Hamilton as well. Have 3 Seiko 5 automatics, one for 20 years beat up and still working fine. Never serviced or had the back off. I have 3 Timex manual wind pieces from the sixties. One was my second watch as my first one was a small ladies watch that still winds and runs. The other three Timex men's watches have however fell prey to my valiant efforts to get them running again. I will continue to try to make at least one out of the three. I have just about all the bottom feeder watches you mention as well. Picked up a Swatch irony that came with a funky red leather band and replaced it with a black Swatch band. About six Seiko quartz models in the mix as well. Also purchased a Citizen BM810-03E Eco-Drive. My first one. It has been off three seconds in as many months. Many NATO bands to mix it up. Got a Timex 1982 M cell that looks like your Timex. A black and grey NATO or solid navy blue NATO really brings out the face. Just got a Seiko quartz 6mm thick by 37mm gold tone with a beige parchment dial 2 hands for $12 on ebay with the original brown band that looks the bomb. Thank you for getting my watch craze going again (I think). Please check out my blog at livingwithoutalot.org. Thanks again.

I have many watches (most of which are Casios and Timexes), but five that are true "vintage collectable" that I didn't pay very much for: #1) a 60s era *Prisma* swiss movment, hand-wound I acquired for $12 at a flea market-- looks pristine and runs great; #2) a mechanical, 1985 *Timex Marlin* (on what's been called a "Mercury," stainless bracelet-- and looks pretty-darned cool) I was given after cleaning out an elderly person's home-- also looks pristine and runs great; #3) a *Swatch* "Cool Days" YGS716GX that runs and looks great, but currently needs a battery-- can't remember what I paid for it... #4) a 90s-era (and nice looking) 7T32-6J60 *Seiko* quartz that runs great... And lastly, #5) a 7006-5019 70s era *Seiko* that I acquired in an even-trade for another, way overly complicated and GIANT-SIZED piece (44.5mm SSG010 Seiko Coutura) that I originally paid $150 for-- less than a 3rd of origional retail... (My 7006 is very similar to yours: beautiful (imho) blue dial, the case is more "pillow"-shaped, and the stainless band is very "chincey" but charming in that "70s ugly" way...) However, as you said-- it does still run like a tank, and it's accurate enough for my needs... My point being-- even after a few years have passed since you made this video, your assertion is still very valid: *that a fun and interesting collection can be amassed for not a lot of money!* 🖒😎

Still have my Seiko 7009 blue dial that looks similar to yours, although it's showing some real wear and tear since my wife bought it for me in 1978. I think that cheap Timex looks awesome, and would fit in the Seiko SARB line, looks wise. For watches under $50 that's not easy for a new watch, but if you go to Jomashop and look at Seiko models under $100 there are some decent Model 5 watches for under $60, and scads below the $100 mark. I think it's hard to go wrong with any Seiko at any price level. Very clever with the smallest Seiko, and you definitely need to get the alien to set alongside Ripley. 👍

Third one: Slightly less yuck. Fourth one: Very nice! Not quite my style, but an elegant and simple look. If I'd gotten something like that from my dad or my grand-dad, it would be an heirloom and I would treasure it. Fifth one: Well, that's a surprise. I like it in a pure fashion sense, especially the easily adjustable bracelet that I would never have to worry about wearing out. The only it's missing is a countdown timer. Would make a fantastic summer beater.

Hey TGV... since you are married to a women who loves fashion watches you might also came across my issue. I'm looking for an affordable alternative to a Daniel Wellington 0102DW. I don't want to buy her an overpriced watch with a cheap chinese quartz movement. Are there any Bauhaus styled watches with a decent movement under $200 / 200€? 🤔

The Timex looks almost exactly like the 1963 Bulova 23 my Dad left me! it still runs (albeit probably a few mins fast per day) and I don't believe it's ever been serviced. This begs the question, why don't you ever speak of or review any Bulovas? They may be more iconic than Timex. I'm fascinated by their "Precisionist" technology although you have rekindled my love for automatics. Love your channel, TGV! You're the consummate "gentleman".

Hi TGV So...you are living next to the Mafia - heh, heh Don't you think that Ripley Seiko will be too small even for your skinny wristh??? Like most people here my favorite is the blue Seiko. Very 70's in design, and really eye catching nowadays. The Timex is pretty too... I used to have a Casio like that back in the 80's. Unfortunately I smashed up the glass when I was repairing a car. Otherwise I would still have it. Seriously considering to rebuy one - partly for nostalgic reasons. You are right; it still has a certain, different kind of style. Who would have though so back then...?!? Thank you Tristano. Happy to see you still climbing down as well as up. Watches should be for everyone.

Go for the re-buy my friend, at $15 it brings so many memories back, I am sure it will for you too! Thank you for the great comment, LOL ;-) Thank you Kjeld, Best regards, TGV

Great idea for a video, TGV. I've never been much of a G-Shock guy, but I'm thinking about getting the DW5600 for around the house use. Can't go wrong for about $45.

If one is willing to search, there are some great deals on vintage digital watches from seiko, citizen, and pulsar from 40-90 bucks. Swiss digitals from tissot show up from time to time as well. They're all very retro and unique!
@theurbangentry8 жыл бұрын
Excellent thinking, I must admit, I never thought of that! I will have to fix that. I did score the Casio Skywalker a while back, so it is very true what you say. Thank you, Best regards, TGV

:D Thanks! If you're interested the two models I own are the Seiko 0439-5009 and the Seiko A257-5010. Using the sort function of "Distance: Nearest First" is a great way to find some close sellers, and better prices. Keep up the great work TGV! -Felipe

There are so many cool Seikos at that price point on EBay, especially Seiko 5s. You could almost do a whole budget collection of those and have something different and unique in every watch. Btw. I'm guessing that Casio isn't actually 57mm wide, but it would be damn hilarious to see them release that, like a tiny digital widescreen TV
@theurbangentry8 жыл бұрын
Damn it, did I say 57mm? Opps. I will have to edit that out. Thank you, Best regards, TGV

Just letting you know TGV the Casio is a plastic case that is plated like the Timex. Back in the 80s they were stainless. But if you notice look at it closely the case doesn't match the bracelet which is folded flimsy stainless. I'm not trolling. You know I comment all the time. I just wanted to explain about the Casio being plated. Casio USA is right near you in New Jersey. I've got several friends that work for them. That's how I know I've collected Casio and Casio Gshock for several years. Keep up the excellent work my friend. Cheers

I just subscribed. I like these vid`s no nonsense, smart. I have a 1937 Bravington ATP. Beautiful. Just had it serviced, though the service took two years as the jeweler, whom I trust took almost two years outsourcing the parts. Classic Vintage. I have yet to see one elsewhere.

It is so true; the strap does make the watch, just like nice rims and tires make the car pop, the secret to good pizza is the crust and good sushi, the rice... all the things you don't think of.

Wong Jefx yes. The thing that most people seem to notice first is the strap. It completely changes a watch. They think I'm wearing different watches each time and laugh when I tell them it's the same watch different straps

What a coincidence, I was just looking an affordable vintage watch. This was certainly a fine video on lower priced watch options. One question, should pre owned vintage timex listings super filled out or can they be very minimal?
@theurbangentry8 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I would stick to more minimal styled pieces, more classic looking stuff seems to age better, the little 1963 I showed will look just as good and fashionable next year or in 10 years time IMO. Best regards, TGV

I recently purchased the Casio in gold color, for the same reasons you did...a walk back down memory lane. It is, in my views the closest to the Michael Kors, in terms of style and range of use. I would suggest the Vostok Amphibia as an addition to this collection.

My budget collection so far is Casio W-217H-9AVCF (update to f-91w), Orient Bambino blue dial v. 3, and the Seiko 5 SNGZ13. Cheers.
