One of these days I am going to organize my records. I do not have them alphabetically or by the artist/band name. I have them all assorted by genre. Its funny though Alex. It really does not matter what kind of order that you put them in. After a while you just remember where everything is. It looks nice. Well done. I would love to thumb through that whole collection~ Rob/Boston

Good cautionary tale my friend. The point about keeping records outside of the sleeves being a liability with a spill is a good one. More cause for concern for me is that my Kallax shelves are just sitting there, nothing anchored to the wall but they've been there for almost 10 years. That said, at some point I will put money into solid shelving.
@diamond_marimba Жыл бұрын
i think you're fine from a safety perspective, i've used "aikiia" for 20+ years without issue as most of us have. you do end up losing a fair amount of storage with kallax bc of the depth, the smaller square openings and the height limitation (largest kallax is about 6' tall)-- makes a big difference when you have a smaller space to contend with.

Those orange shelves look really nice, I just have regular IKEA ones in genres (if you ever worked in a record store that's how it's done it feels wrong going A-Z). I put a 4x2 Expedit on its side and my decks and amps on top.

Oh man, sorry this happened. I decided to put in plywood end caps in my unit to get better coverage/protection against the aluminum frames at the end of the shelves. These units are tricky to assemble/install, I’m still tweaking different portions that my handyman didn’t install perfectly.

ah yes I thought I saw your setup on their Instagram feed, didn't know you made a video about it, will check out for sure.

Have you tried to learn how to find studs in your wall on your own? Plenty of KZbin videos on the topic. There are some tricks on how to do it without a stud finder. If you're in an older house with plaster and lath walls, there's a method of using a magnet tied to a string. You slide it along the wall and it will grab on the wall where a nail behind the plaster is attaching the lath to the vertical studs. -Brian
@diamond_marimba Жыл бұрын
in this case it was more that the handyman didn't think it needed to be anchored to a stud, and me assuming that he knew better

Tragic! Hopefully the damage is minimal. Years ago I had shelves put in that created stress on the wall. The gutter on the outside was jammed with leaves & when it rained it leaked in on a section & several covers got damaged. The Urban Sax with Pierre Henry & Valclav Nelhybel are two that come to mind, so I very much feel your pain.
@diamond_marimba Жыл бұрын
thanks for sharing. I have the henry but still looking for nelhybel.

What kind of shelving is that? Lucky you had most of the lps protected in plastic. I don't like storing my lps outside the sleeve for the reason you cited. It just seems like it's a bit more protection, plus I like seeing the back of the cover as well. Cheers.
@diamond_marimba Жыл бұрын
hey Dave I'll mention it later if it all works out. yes putting the LP outside of the jacket protects the jacket at the expense of protecting the LP.
@Localbandography Жыл бұрын
Quite an undertaking putting everything in alphabetical order. My collection is similar in that respect along with release date added into the mix. Still separated by genre mostly and a few jazz labels though as well. Feels like being a librarian at times to upkeep it I have to say.

yes, we'll see if my back can take a few weeks of slouching over stacks
@soundofminder Жыл бұрын
Man, that's terrifying. Sorry that happened to you but glad to hear there's little damage. I have my records currently spaced out by genre as well, but there's so much overlap of genres that I don't know where to put it, so I'm thinking of putting it back in alphabetic order as well with maybe a few specific cubes dedicated to either an artist, or genre or something.
@diamond_marimba Жыл бұрын
exactly, I really wanted to get away from the genre thing. now many artists have hard to remember names but I can always use discogs if I 'need'to find a particular artist.
@TheVinylverse Жыл бұрын
Ouch, Alex. Sorry that happened. I'm glad that most everything came away in good shape. This gave you the excuse to reorganize. Is the top shelf easy for you to reach? It'll be interesting to hear down the road how you like having everything A-Z versus how you organized previously. I'm sure this is a bit of an undertaking but there's the benefit of actually going through every record in the collection. Good luck with the project!

Oh man. Worse than I imagine. Desk. Monitor. Water. Ouff. Glad damage was minimal. Now you have me questioning keeping the records outside the jackets. Although my shit solid right now i think and all individual shelving units.
@diamond_marimba Жыл бұрын
as dave from tx mentioned, i also do it so I can see the back of the jacket. I use the round Japanese inner sleeves so getting the record out of the jacket is easy. if I kept the original paper sleeves I probably would keel the records on the outside.
