I know what's wrong with this movie now. The AI lady solidified it, this movie made the cube out to be an educational tool, to teach these people a 'lesson' and you don't need me to tell you how stupid that is. The original cube was just an anomaly, you could probably gleam some knowledge from it but it sure as hell wasn't trying to be Sonic's school house.

Yeah trying to pull off some Saw shit randomly wasn’t a good idea especially since it wasn’t even tried in a creative way. They were basically just in detention with an evil ai telling you that you did a bad.
@frostrider3704
@frostrider3704 Жыл бұрын
The whole point of the original cube was that it was made through mindless bureaucracy. No one knew what it was for, but it got funding, everyone got paid from start to finish and then, since it was built, they HAD to put people in it. Who chose those people, no one knows, it could just be a someone with a phonebook in an office somewhere trying to keep their cushy job. They might not even know they're sending people to their deaths, they might just have a list to fill that came from somewhere else. No one had the whole picture, there was no big masterplan behind it and that was why it was so damn terrifying as a concept. The second you start to explain it, cube loses all meaning.

As a fan of the original CUBE, I have to say watching this remake annoyed me in so many ways. It's like the film makers of the remake didn't really try to have a clear set of rules on how the CUBE works and ignore any solid character development.

@AlexOlinkiewicz
@AlexOlinkiewicz Жыл бұрын
@@nekonebitan2912 Yeah at least in Cube 2 the characters had conversations throughout the film and not just walking around in complete silence. Plus the Hypercube gave some excuse on the odd rules that happen in that film, compared to this film that just toss random things to force in plot events. Like why one random Safe Room spawn prison bars only to give a reason for the group to separate, or a room has a memory scanner with a projector wall... which happened not to long after surviving a trap that did a scanning before firing lasers, or a Trap Room that literally waiting 8 minutes to activate instead of right off the bat just for the Good Guy vs. Bad Guy moment with the Bad Guy monologuing his life.

This makes me appreciate the original even more tbh, the amazing duality of its brilliance and simplicity still holds up to this day. The concept of people stuck in one deadly place and trying to get out may appear simple on paper, but oh man the script and character dynamics were done so well that it made me curous about everybody and nervous about who's getting offed, and that gut-twisting revelation about the main character the movie decided to give you the main lens to trick you into rooting for... it's rare for movies these days to make me feel all these sorts of things. Great tension, great script, and awesome delivery by the actors, it was def better by a mile than any sequels that came after and this remake

I think aside from the obvious lack of character personalities in the film, what it really misses the mark on is actually giving us stakes. All the traps, from what I can see, don't feel as built up and almost come out of nowhere? Like in the original, they had a method for figuring out what rooms were safe and which were trapped, but in this one, they can be standing in a safe room and then suddenly there's... jail bars? A TV projector? And since we don't care about the characters, all the traps just feel really not intimidating/surprising. It's like watching a cast of blank slates meander around a slightly inconvenient maze that may or may not shoot you.

The original Cube was Twelve Angry Men in a deadly escape room. Clashing personalities have to work together or die. They put the remake in a culture that's all about conformity, so you immediately lose the tension that comes from high stress situations in a culture of competition. So all we got left is a bunch of mild mannered people bumbling around and having flashbacks.
@GamingintheAM0801

"a culture that's all about conformity" A lot of people who aren't from Japan don't realize this. Nerds especially like to assume Japan is like this theme park haven for them, but no, Japan basically invented the phrase "The nail that sticks out is the one that gets the hammer." The reason anime and other Japanese media can get so off the wall is because it's basically their only outlet in a culture that demands everybody act "normal."
@sigh824
@sigh824 Жыл бұрын
Nah I don’t care where you are, putting normal people into high pressured situations creates tension, that’s just storytelling 101, and there’s plenty of stories in Japan where that’s the case. THIS story is just doing a bad job at showing stakes and creating tension, like the characters are flat and boring but the pacing is also horrible. This movie just seems like it was made by a huge fan who was like “I love this, but if I was there I’d do it like this!”, but he forgot the storytelling part and didn’t fill in the gaps he created with his changes.

I noticed that all sequels/ prequels and remakes have a hard time capturing what made the first one so great that being it was the characters in the cube. It seems more like there kinda doing the escape room thing where the cube and the traps are the selling point

Nice vid as always GG. Btw, I decided to try and find Japanese reviews of this remake to see what the reception was there, and to put it bluntly, most people think it sucks compared to the original. You think by now, most movie companies would realize that trying to do domestic remakes of foreign films don't work out well and most people would rather watch the original. Guess not.

While I do think this remake was just poorly written, the way Japanese shows and movies are typically shot and edited can feel drastically different compared to Western ones, which is why the pacing might feel a bit off or even awkward. I've noticed this with Korean, Thai, and Taiwanese shows and movies as well. There are slight but noticeable differences in the way they're shot and stitched together. It can feel like a completely different style of filming that can make movies in the same genre with similar plots feel very dissimilar.

Idk bro Japan has been fucking GOATed with filmmaking over the past seven decades and Korea for the past two lol and have been universally beloved by Western audiences. Japan had Kurosawa (To Live, The Seven Samurai), Sono (Love Exposure), Kon (Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress), Ozu (Late Spring, Floating Weeds, Early Summer), Kore-eda (Afterlife), Imamura (Dr. Akagi), etc. and Korea has had Kim Ki-duk (Time, Spring Summer Fall Winter and Spring), Park Chan-wook (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy), Bae Yong-kyun (Why Has Bodhi Dharma Left For The East?), Bong Joon-ho (Mother, Parasite, Okja, The Host) Yeon Sang-ho (Train to Busan), etc. This film is just dog-shit, none of those films had off pacing at all except maybe Love Exposure. Hell, even Thailand have Weerasethakul, Sasanatieng, and Assarat. And obviously China, Taiwan, Hong Kong have had numerous masters of cinema (John Woo, Zhang Yimou, Edward Yang, Johnnie To, Hu Bo, and many more). All of their films likewise translate effortlessly to Western audiences.

Nah dude this movie is just bad. They felt the need to have a main character when the original didn't have one, that's where they went wrong imo.

I will say that I like the idea of the woman being part of the queue. As far as the main character who survives at the end, I took it more as him being reset because he failed the test and they are wanting him to go through and see if he will learn better. But maybe I’m thinking too much into it.

It's kind of nice to see the reverse situation of the bad movie remakes for once. Like how America took things like The Ring, Dragonball, or Death Note and made them so much worse.
