In my opinion he looks disappointed and even hurt but is trying to put on a good face for it. If they both planned to do something like this that's one thing, but this took something away from him. Even a well-intentioned "gift" can be done completely wrong without proper thought. Its just like communication - if you don't think about how they will receive the message, you might as well deliver it in a language they won't understand. She could've done this at another time in the reception.
