My step dad had a 35foot Chris-Craft cabin cruiser which I learned about fixing the rotted wooden bottom every year. On the Anacostia R. in Washington DC we spend 2-3 days to get it sea worthy for trips down the Potomac & out into the Chesapeake Bay. I was 10-11 then & there's a strange feeling when you're seeing large holes cut into the hull but the prep work to ready the hull was so hard. Had to get the the soft spots repaired & scrape the bottom so we could paint & drop her in the water >> dry docked every fall. I can't believe I'm looking at these repairs right now..... Hey, thanks for remembering 1972 for me. peace

You guys have found it and those nay sayers are just jealous because they aren’t prepared make the sacrifices and to do what it takes to be where you are. Have always enjoyed all your videos and Captain Ken your technical vlogs are the best. You guys remind me of myself and my wife - fellow sailors enjoying the day and the future and doing what it takes. The storms do pass and there is always another beautiful sunset ahead. We hope you carry on and wishing you the very best. P&J currently sailing in the Med.

I am faithfully following these videos. Also noticed last week the hurtful remarks about the PATREON contributions and decided to support via PATREON. NOT because Zivile & Ken need the financial support to complete their circumnavigation but because of the quality of information & entertainment provided to me. When I read a book on my KINDLE; watch a movie on NETFLIX or AMAZON PRIME I also have to pay for the content. We were together in PORT VILA VANUATU and I know from our daily interactions how much time both Z and K dedicate to these videos; how it encroaches every aspect of their boat life. I watch a lot of sailing channels but AQUARIUS shows that not everything is perfect all the time; there are rough times; stuff breaks down and I appreciate them showing both sides of the coin. I also own an AMEL and Ken's mechanical videos, as well as advice he is always willing to give me, are very important to me. Pls keep the videos coming; fair winds and hopefully we will meet for some sushi somewhere.

Quite surprised and proud to see an HMT machine tool in New Zealand. These were made in Bangalore. In the decades 1960 to 1990 HMT was an Indian government-owned producer of machine tools, mechanical Watches and Tractors. The corporation was considered one of the "Nine Jewels" of Indian manufacturing. Sadly the corporation tuned to dust (literally) after the decline of manufacturing in India pursuant to "Globalisation" (and the abandonment of the self-reliance model), the advent of digital/electronic watches and China becoming the factory of the world.

First time I've seen a retractable thruster, I was wondering why no gear oil before I read your text. There's hydroscopic outboard gearcase oil that would be perfect for it, absorbs upto 20% of its volume in water. Plastic propeller shaft was also a surprise, but a good idea (less corrosion) just not durable where the seal runs. Interesting to see thanks.
@SailingAquarius5 жыл бұрын
Another cool thing, I believe the gears are bronze, so they don't rust either. (could be wrong on the bronze) Just the bearings and the shaft can rust. Amel must have some very good material engineers!

Fantastic video....I loved the intro, I had a good laugh. Yer funny! I've never seen a yacht bow thruster apart before so the rest of the video was really informative and interesting and well worth the watching. A great rebuild saving muchismo dollars. I've often wondered if it would be possible to remove and refit the bow thruster unit at anchor without hauling out, if in an out of the way place without haul out facilities. Now at least I can give it some thought. HMT machines...Hindustani Machine Tool company made solid affordable mechanical watches for years as a result of an interrsting story worth the reading of. The music describes my life a little at the moment so was also a source of some humour. Thanks a bunch for a great learning experience.and a fantastic video....well done, guys. Answer for - I've often wondered if it would be possible to remove and refit the bow thruster unit at anchor without hauling out, if in an out of the way place without haul out facilities. Now at least I can give it some thought. Yes, you can do it on a Super Maramu. There is a special tool, basically a rope with a wood plug, just to drop the Bow Thruster in a marina or at anchor. You can do a total rebuild on the bow thruster without being on the hard....

That bow thruster is mature technology, the bolt coming loose inside shouldn't happen. That one large shaft with the pinion gear on it...was that a nylon shaft? Or hdpe maybe since nylon is hydroscopic? There should be a crush washer or you have to precisely shim that gear set to have the correct gear lash, aka distance between the two gears. Waterproof grease? I'm pretty sure all grease is waterproof..and any grease that gets water mixed I'm will turn milky. A good trick is to smear grease all inside that housing before you button it up, then add the gear lube through those little screws that were covered with fiberglass or whatever you said was covering them...which you forgot to do! Edit: oh...you can add gear oil from the top..very good. I should've known you wouldn't have forgotten..you're doing real good work there skipper!

Do you know why the bow thruster creates bubbles? Water will boil at room temp if the pressure is low enough. The pressure on the back side of the prop blades is so low that the water "boils" at ambient temp and releases bubbles! Isn't that crazy??

Where wereyou when that hapend? And how much did it cost to fix it, includind taking the boat out of the water.
@SailingAquarius5 жыл бұрын
I didn't take the boat out of the water for the bow thruster. I used the bow thruster during the haul out, and I only dropped the bow thruster to change the oil. Ends up, there was no oil left.. But, to answer your question. About $20 each for the 3 Bearings - $60. Plus let say $200 for the composite shaft (this was left as a spare on Aquarius from the previous owner, so I don't know the real price). About $15 for o-ring and seal. About $40 in stuff like sealers, fillers etc. Plus about $100 for the engineering guys. So, a bit over $400. But, I am also going to buy from Amel a complete rebuild kit, about $700 to carry as a spare, which includes new gears, composite shaft, bearings, and cap.. If something ever goes wrong with the lower end of the bow thruster, I should be able to fix it almost anywhere. I think the haul out/in at Port Whangarei was about $600. There is a fee per day on the hard, $25 or so... But, if you want exact numbers, you can get from the website for Port Whangarei Marine...

Amel design and make excellent boats. But. I fail to see the advantage of a bow thruster that is lowered and raised. On the other hand I can see the disadvantages. ie complexity, risk of leaks. SV Delos removed their bow thruster for repair and it fell almost injuring a person (Blue from memory). A better safer alternative would be to have the thruster permanently fix in a through hole , and cover the holes with folding covers which stream line the hull when thrusters are not in use. I'm open to other pros and cons I have not thought of. I'm glad you got the leak fixed.
@SailingAquarius5 жыл бұрын
Actually the bow thruster design is a good one from my perspective. 1) can be removed and rebuilt without hauling the boat out of the water. 2) Brake away prop so the motor or gears are not harmed if you hit something. 3) protected and out of the water when underway. Delos had bad communication between the person in the boat, and the person under the boat. I am sure that Brian would agree with that. Note that Z and I were waring our head sets so we could talk to each other when taking the bow thruster down, and installing the bow thruster. I am very happy with the design..

Buy a boat they said, it would be FUN!!! This is why some people refer to yachting as boat repairs in exotic places...ah Yachting the only way to see the world lol.

Hi guys. This is the first video I have watched of yours. I sub'd. I do have a question though. And, no flames here. I certainly don't have your skills or knowledge, but, shouldn't your popup at 5:57 read "coarse", not "course?" I am not the grammer police, but, with a grandmother and sister that are English teachers, I just thought I'd ask. Cheers and have a great trip!

Am an engineer, and we engineers only see numbers... Sorry :) BTW Thanks for subbing, and hope you stick around! Fair winds.

Sir, don't worry about complaining. From what I can tell from KZbin videos, sailing sucks. I think my obsession with getting a boat has been crushed and I'm glad.
@SailingAquarius5 жыл бұрын
Some KZbinrs over glorify it, and some make it out to be complicated. It's neither, just a different way of life. But, most of the time.... it beats working at the same desk every day.

@@SailingAquarius I'm 60 yrs old and been tortured as a plant engineer. When it's over, I don't want to ever again have to search the world for parts and information. It's hard enough in the US, I tip my hat to your projects out on the frontier! That last episode where you were being dripped on, did it for me. Also that burn on your wife, I felt sad for her. My complaining would be an order of magnitude more than what you do. Great music by the way.

why di you not clean those poor gears??!! 18:00 OMG they are filthy.... Damn..
@SailingAquarius5 жыл бұрын
Paul - The gears were cleaned, but you are probably seeing some of the grease that I put on after they were cleaned. Sometimes it looks like they are dirty, or greasy. But, thank you for watching anyway!
@SailingAquarius5 жыл бұрын
And one more thing...notice at 19:27 how I am holding the gear set. It's because they are FILTHY with grease when I put it together. I was trying to not get that FILTHY grease on my hands. But, I would like you to know, gears like to be FILTHY with grease. If you run an engine without being filthy with oil inside, it just doesn't last very long. Cheers!

Ho! And how many days did it took you?
@SailingAquarius5 жыл бұрын
I was working on several things during this time, and the video was shot over a week. But, few hours here, few hours there... Sometimes things need to dry... Also, after it was together, and added the 90 weight, I just left it for a few days to see if it would leak again...
