When should I start teaching my child to read? This is a question many parents want to know. We all want to do the very best for our kids, so shouldn't we get started as soon as possible? Not necessarily! From my experience in teaching seven of our ten kids to read, it is best to wait until they are developmentally equipped and show signs of reading readiness.

You are really encouraging. I was thinking about your channel today and got on to check out who I’m subscribed to and this was just the kind of encouragement I needed. We have 7 children ,5 homeschool, and we use Abeka right now, but I feel like there are a lot of subjects I’d like to do together as a family and Abeka is so individualized and the more kids we have in school the more I feel like we really need to do some subject together. Not to mention the grading take soo much time 😩 my husband is pretty leery about switching up somethings and piecing things together, and that makes me feel insecure about mainly teaching my little ones to read without the help of Abeka video, although I practically do it now haha, and just doing things more together as a family and I almost don’t trust myself I feel like bc of that, but I’m really hoping to get the courage to convince him that I’d like to try more of a family togetherness type of schooling and just some different curriculum. Thanks for making it seem doable :)

We have 7 kids, too. I see how you feel the need to do some subjects together. My older kids do history and science together, and that is really helpful. Then, I am able to focus on language arts and math on an individual basis.

Thank you! I am so glad this has encouraged you! Maybe if you tried it for a time, you could just feel out how it works for you? That might help your husband get a glimpse of what it looks like. We do some subjects together: science, history (except for my high schoolers), Bible, art, composer, memory work, read aloud, current events. The subjects the kids do individually are math, writing, language, and reading. For me it just makes sense to combine certain subjects that can work better for as a group. I hope you can find an approach that works well for you!

That's pretty much what we do as well. I think there's more benefit, especially for science and history, to do it as a group because of trying experiments or having history discussions or field trips, etc.
