Thanks Shawn. I've been playing close to 45 years now and can't agree with you more concerning the use of your fingers. Never limit yourself as a Guitarist should use each and every resource available on both the guitar and the player's hands/fingers. Our Son has been playing for a Decade now and I am still trying to hammer home to him my biggest regret playing was not learning to finger-pick and/or using your fingers to pick earlier in my playing history. Favorite picks are Fender Med/Heavy, I also use the .6mm Tortex. It should also be noted that using your fingers can have an even bigger impact when using a slide. Its a journey we're all on, glad to hear from others who are also traveling down this path.

Very inspiring! I go back and forth all the time. Usually without even thinking about it. I love the sound you get with the fingers and how it makes you play less and more melodic, as you pointed out.

Great lesson and awesome examples. I've played a hybrid pick and other fingers since I first say country pickers doing it. However a few years ago I made myself practice part of the time with no pick. I've learned many finger style songs using the fingers and thumb. And then started trying to practice playing some of my normal pick licks with just my thumb and fingers. It has really helped my touch and feel overall. Shawn those examples gave me more to shoot for as far as cool and versatile tone. You're the second pro that I've heard talk about using the shoulder of the pick. Now I am going to experiment with that. Thank you so much for the great examples of getting different tones and feels.

Thanks Allan! Yeah that shoulder trick goes way back for a lot of players!

I use the back corners of the pick, the front digs in too much for me. Straight to the strings is crisper while a slight angle is softer. Cool to see I'm not the only player out there that uses the back.🎸

Thanks for watching! Yeah pick angle is a big deal when it comes to tone for sure.

I have been doing hybrid picking (pick and fingers) for years, but whenever I try to play with fingers only, they invariably get hung up in the strings. I've spent a bit of time trying, but just don't seem to get the hang of it. It's a cool sound for those who have mastered it, but just hasn't become part of my tool kit.

I've been using Fender medium picks my whole life (tortoise shell; I found that the fancy colored ones eroded back unevenly and caused me to break a string once at a gig). I sometimes play solo lines with bare fingers, but not enough and this video is reminding me to do that more often, so thanks for that! I also make pretty frequent use of the difference in tone when playing near the bridge vs playing near the neck, especially on acoustic.

In case you see this...... Has the deadline passed for posting a #makingmusicathome video? Thanks for all the great reviews and awesome playing that is inspiring. I learn about gear and hear examples which is awesome. And I get exposed to approaches to playing I haven't been able to quite get yet. But I watch close and thanks to your vids I am getting closer. Thank you.

Thanks for watching this video Allan. The deadline was on the 22nd of this month for #makemusicathome unfortunately but I sincerely appreciate your interest and I'm glad to hear that you're growing as a guitar player.

I have notice how Robben Ford does a lot of subtle technique stuff with fingers. I'm a fender large medium guy except when playing acoustic which is a different ball game, enter hybrid and finger style stuff. I haven't gotten comfortable using fingers on the electric. Maybe in the future.

Nice. What model is the Les Paul? I'm constantly changing between pick and fingers. My first teacher was a huge Mark Knopfler fan.. I always prefer what I play without a pick but I still need it for some things. I've been using the Andy James Dunlop picks for a couple of years now. I don't play that style but it's the most comfortable pick I've found for me

Awesome man! Yeah it's a very personalized thing when it comes to expressing on a guitar and at the end of the day, it's whatever works for sure. That LP is an R9. It's not mine but it's a really great guitar indeed.
