Great Job of explaining this Dan. You would be Suprise how many players in high and college still don't understand this. Approach, Approach, Approach! Major key to hitting!

All i can say is be committed to whatever you are doing. If youre going to hit then be committed to making a good swing on a good pitch. Dont go up there in two minds like i might should take but maybe ill swing if its good. Im either swinging if its good or im taking all the way. That is why I dont like swinging 3-0 because very very few young hitters can be properly committed yet selective enough to take a good swing on a 3-0 pitch.

For 9 yr old, how about this- on the first strike swing for the fences. On subsequent strikes just try to make contact, maybe even bunt (ie be conservative)

9 year olds dont need hard rules like that, and i dont like that proposal anyway. being selective like I discussed works at all ages.

I dont know that anyone should ever be “swing for the fences” approach. Most times youre just going to miss completely and waste a pitch or hit something weakly. Many people are going to hit better in 2 strike counts because they are keeping it simple and not trying to do too much. Id say line drive approach pretty much always - miss hit is hopefully a hard ground ball or hard fly ball. Middle of the field gap to gap ideally but that part might be a little much for young kids, but maybe more for practice.

@@auzmo I know but it's just that at no strikes now you have some leeway. so you can burn a strike trying to get a really nice hit... maybe you swing really hard on that one... and if it doesn't work then you tone it down and just try to make contact. At some point kids need to start swinging hard. you don't want them to be timid for too long. you can spend the first good pitch on going for it. but maybe AAA little league is too soon. but idk, some of these kids are pretty good.

@@nofurtherwest3474 line drive is hitting the ball hard. “Swinging for fence”pretty much never works at any level. Youre just wasting a pitch. That pitch might be the best pitch you see like the video talks about. Put your best swing on it, but not “swing for the fence”. In my opinion that isnt a good thing to even ever say to a kid. They are going to take a much less controlled and actually slower swing that a simple controlled swing where they are much more likely to hit the ball even harder than a swing for the fence swing. If youre having trouble getting them to swing hard enough to hit the ball hard like a line drive then there are other ways to work on that.
