Please do not use the word "pause." The pitcher must come to a "clear and discernible stop." It is not a pause, it's a stop. If the pitcher "pauses" (which means he doesn't "stop," then he has committed a Balk. The rule book NEVER mentions a "pause." Not using the correct language and adding in incorrect language teaches this part of the set position mechanics incorrectly. Simply, there is no such thing as a "pause," it's a "stop." That's it.

18:25 As the story goes, Wee Willie Keeler used to bunt a ton of balls foul until he found a pitch he liked. MLB changed the rule in 1895 to the current one to combat this type of strategy. I can't find much truth to this story, but it does fit in the timeline of when he played (1892 - 1910). So, it's possible.

Played ball my whole life, high school, college, little bit of semi pro…I feel like I know the rule pretty well. The ONLY reason I searched and watched this video was from a scenario that happened during a slow pitch softball game lol Scenario: -My team is on defense -Runners at 1st and 2nd and 1 out -Ball goes up, infield fly is called and both runners take off running. We catch the ball and throw to second to double off the runner that’s currently crossing the plate. Umpire says runs scores and the runner that was at first and now standing at second is safe. The umpire argued with me saying as soon as the infield fly rule is called then the runners don’t have to tag…I’m assuming since that aspect wasn’t covered in this video that it’s common f’n sense that the runners would have to tag up any time a ball is caught in the air.

@@DanBlewett Thanks for the reply, it’s probably been 5 years since that happened but every time I hear “infield fly” I think of that umpire being so confident that I was the moron for arguing, that it keeps me up an extra 30 minutes at night.

I've never been fond of energy drinks, drugs, or any sort of substances that puts stuff into your body to give you some kind of feeling or jolt. My number one concern has always been the side effect it poses on my body, and then the other giant concern is how dependent will I be to that substance, like energy drinks to get through the day. I rather be dead tired and dozing off looking to sleep than put a bandaid on with energy drinks.

I'm hooked to baseball thanks to Moneyball movie, but as we all know, the best way to experience baseball is to go to the stadium. When you watched it on TV, I noticed that you'll missed a lot of the whole play. And as a Malaysian, baseball is one of the minority sport.

Very well done, unfortunately the most important part of teaching youth pitchers how to drive the ball is lost in tradition in that nobody seems to know how the Elbow articulates to mitigate intuitive joint pathomechanics so it just rolls along. To eliminate over valgus stress that destroys the elbow pitchers need to sync up the landing of the glove leg and arm transition arrival to full length outwards rotation of the Humerus and forearm. So when you drive a pitch you start pronating immediately. By contracting the flexor mass it will assist the UCL instead of leaving it alone from supinating the drive! This is the most important thing you could possibly teach any pitcher or thrower!

Always enjoy the content here. I'm curious though about proper landing. I understand well the importance of rotation in velocity and not opening up, especially as a smaller person who needs to leverage the body properly to get that velocity. But we have some kids who, due to their foot being more closed upon landing, can't rotate the hips enough (sometimes spike the ball), or finish squared up to the catcher when following through. They throw more accurate staying closed up as long as possible in the air but landing on the green line with their toe directly at the catcher. What is the best positioning?

There's room for variance, but close to center. Too open, like in the video, is not good and should be coached/drilled to fix. Being overly picky starts to focus on minutiae rather than the main goals.

Thanks for this. For ten years trying to drill this into youth players heads. You throw your pitch well and trust the process. Never try to miss bats. Even the best hitters are under .400 avg. That means if they put the ball in play, you have a better chance to get an out then they do of getting on base. Four balls is a guarantee on-base runner!

Chasing outside slider probably means looking for fastball and aggressively swinging. I'd like to have the next pitch be a slider at the batter that dips into the inside of the strike zone. This'll freeze the batter, they probably won't swing, if they do it'll be a mistimed swing and they'll hit it poorly for a foul or low energy field ball. Now you're ahead in the count at 1-2. The batter has gotten a lot of sliders so far. Time to speed up the pitches with a four seam thrown really hard outside half of plate or a two seamer, whichever you feel comfortable throwing real hard but avoiding a HBP.

As the phenomenally gifted instructor you are, I still probably wouldn’t have gotten it back then. Tried for years, no success, I tried everything - desperately, it was like learning reverse quantum physics. It wasn’t the grip, it was the weird, unorthodox release that screwed me up. I never even came close or even lucked into a good slider in training. By far, the most difficult, and impossible for me, pitch to learn. I still to this day can’t figure out why. Such a shame because when they work they work so well. Before I played pro I couldn’t even foul off sliders, even when I knew they were coming. I always told myself that curveballs were much safer for the arm as a coping mechanism so I didn’t destroy my confidence. I guess there are some pitches some pitchers can never learn with success (like a knuckleball). If you don’t learn one pitch it’s not the end of the world - just move on.

I tried for years to learn a slider, I never could do it. I tried as hard as I could and I just couldn’t do it. Instead threw breaking balls from different arm angles and release points at different speeds. Tell me something, which pitch puts more physical stress on your arm? I really don’t know, but I’ve always heard hard sliders are a higher health risk pitch, but I still don’t know. Gil Patterson (MLB pitching coach for the Blue Jays) told me he heard sliders were rougher on your arm but he even didn’t know for sure. What’s your opinion? Great video as always!

Hey, I'm trying to be a walk-on pitcher for my university and your videos have been a tremendous help for me so far because I can't afford a coach. I've noticed many high level pitchers have their leading leg land on the ground before they torque their shoulders. What are your thoughts on that and is too much hip-shoulder separation a bad thing? (your body can only twist so much so I feel like you should utilize it as much as possible) Thank you for your content🙏

you can lead a horse to water but cant make him drink. It's frustrating, but there's only so much a coach can do - ultimately the player has to want to change and want it to stick, and it has to be within their power to do so (not always the case with young kids).
@TheRyanFreeman

Would this be an opportunity to give the player some good external cues to help them retain and employ what they've been practicing? Often low leg and short arm means they are aiming, and/or worried about hitting the batter.
@B0bLeeSw4gger
@B0bLeeSw4gger 5 күн бұрын
@TheRyanFreeman well...his first start was a perfect game. The issue is, during practice, the velo is up. In a game, the command is on point but the velocity goes down. The problem there is his school coaches only see velo and don't care about command. At his current velo, he won't make Varsity even though his pitching stats are the best on his team. (The coaching is just a ridiculous mess but that's a whole different story for a different day)

Love the advice here. Plan A, throw strikes. Read a story about a reporter asking a successful pitcher what his best pitch was and the pitcher said "a strike". Batter still has to do an amazing thing to hit a pitch that's down the middle he doesn't know what speed or spin out into the field for a double or home run.
