My wife and I have the iPhone 12 and will upgrade after the first of the year to a 15 or 16 because of the SOS feature. We are in our late 60’s and go out in the back country of Idaho and for safety reasons I think it will save us money from getting a subscription SOS device. Apple says for at least 2 years the SOS feature is free and then we will see what happens when they decide to charge for this service. Great videos Rich. Glad I found you.

Appreciate the voice of sanity. My wife and I are still (!) sporting our iPhone 11s. I dread the day when those are no longer supported 'cause that's about when I upgrade. The "phone race" reminds me of the early days of PCs: I had a 286 (skipped generation one), then 286...486...586/pentium at which point PC's were basically commodities -- I'd shop by price and features I wanted. Phones did a similar rapid increase in ability/functionality but now they're basically commodities again. Yeah, sure, the 16 is likely zippier with more features than my aging 11 but I'm not sure I could tell/see or would use the gains! A long way of saying I'm with you -- I'll upgrade when I have to.

It's'm 73 years old. I still work and use my phone daily in doing my job. But I have an iPhone 13 and it still does everything I need and runs all of the apps I use daily. For that reason I have no need to upgrade and will probably hold on to this phone for 2 more years. I have grandkids, as well, but the camera in this phone takes great pictures. Battery life is at 91% and I charge once a day.

I recently changed my iPhone8 for a new iPhone 15 Pro-Max. Not because the iPhone8 was faulty or not meeting my needs and it had a new genuine battery a couple of years and and was still at 92% good. However I felt the need and since I love photography, the greatly improved camera was something I lusted after. The 8 was nearly eight years of age, so I do not feel that I need to justify a new one regardless and I hope that the new 15 Pro-Max will be future-proof for many more years. I specifically chose it because this model is apparently compatible with the forthcoming AI features. My wife is not that interested in advanced features but she uses it as an all in one device that takes the place of an iPad, so she was upgraded some six months ago from a failing battery model to a 14 Plus, not the then current 15 model, so saved quite a bit on the purchase price. It was partly after seeing her phone that I decided to upgrade. Besides the camera, features I really appreciate above the 8 are the MagSafe, larger screen with no waste areas top and bottom, wireless charging, the facial recognition and other upgrades too numerous to mention and that I didn’t know I wanted because I never knew they existed. It really was time to upgrade from the 8
@RichBowlin4 ай бұрын
Yes, you made a big leap in hardware with that update. If I didn't make all these videos I'd be perfectly content with my 15 Pro Max. It should last for years.
@dazauto1074 ай бұрын
That was a massive jump and probably overdue. As a 12 Pro Max owner, I see no need to upgrade to a phone that looks the same and basically functions the same. Though the 5x camera and satellite messaging are tempting.

@@dazauto107 I sold it privately for £100 and bought the 15 Pro Max from Amazon for £100 less than Apple direct. So I got exactly what Apple were offering as a trade in and saved myself £100 in the process. Was my purchase way overdue? I don’t think so and I could have carried on using the 8 for another few years if GAS had not got a hold of me. One could spend a fortune needlessly and regularly upgrading stuff for no good reason. Moderation is my motto and how I can afford the best of everything and everything remains as good or better than when new until it fails to do what is ‘necessary’. I’m writing this on a first generation iPad Pro and have zero desire to spend over £1000 to upgrade. Why would I?

Now that I'm retired, I upgrade about every five years. I am going from a iPhone 11 to a 15 Maxpro. I have not had the pro version in the past bc I could not justify the cost just for the camera features when I have a DSLR. We have a cruise planned for Alaska and bought the new one anticipating not having to tote around my big camera on shore excursions. I'll use it for taking pictures of the coastline and Glacier Bay and am debating whether I take it at all. Probably won't upgrade from the 15 for many years as this thing cost almost as much as my MacBook Air!

Apple on its web site has a nice ability to compare iPhone models (and iPad as well). You select the models you want to compare then it lists the capabilities of each side by side. You can select the model you have and the one you think you might want and go down the list and ask yourself what the differences might mean to you (if any).

As an IT professional, my rule from a security perspective is when Apple stops supporting my phone in the current version of iOS… it’s time to upgrade. I, like @readthebible88, am currently using an iPhone SE 2 (2020) which is still supported for the upcoming iOS 18 release. So, I’m most likely going to wait for the SE 4, expected in spring 2025. Note, when Apple releases any update to iOS, whether a small point release like the current 17.6.1 or the upcoming 18, you should update iOS on your phone. As long as your phone supports the latest software version, no need to upgrade to a new iPhone.

Thanks Rich. I am retired and although have always been something of an early adopter, I still manage with an iPhone 8 Plus. the battery is only about 75% efficient but as I am a home most days and I have recharging built into my car and golf trolley that just about covers 99% of my day. Other than the battery it still seems to function perfectly well for my needs. Last year we bought a refurbished iPhone 12 from Amazon for my wife as the software for her old 6 was beginning to creak. I guess that will happen to my 8 before long and that is when I will upgrade. I will probably follow the same route with a refurbished phone probably 1 level down from the newest iteration.

I actually set a reminder in the Health app. But I don't usually have my phone on me at the time I need to take the medicine. So my wife plays backstop. Thanks so much for watching!

@@RichBowlin That's because you don't live by yourself. I do. I don't go ANYWHERE without my phone. Not from the kitchen table to the sink. If I fall, who am I going to call, Ghostbusters? I've taught all my single friends to keep their phone with them at all times. I can't tell you how many times they have thanked me for being able to call 911 if necessary. I'm almost 78 and that's why I do it.

You completely missed Apple phones when they are no longer supported. (see below comments.) I have no idea when Android phones are no longer supported you might want to clue your followers oin on that important topic.

Id rather actually upgrade to an android. Something that can actually work.

Would changing phones solve my problem? Couple of years ago my emails suddenly started being shunted into Junk, either directly or very soon after arriving in Inbox. Spent days on phone with Apple Helpline: had multiple engineers trying to identify and fix the problem, with them logging into my devices (iMac, iPad and iPhone all affected) & trying everything they knew. But no cause or solution found: in the end I gave up and now just check both Inbox and Junk for new messages. Maybe I should try setting up a new email address?

Hard to say. I have a newer phone and email works as expected. It might be the way your account is setup. I'm sure you've looked into that. Wish I could help more.

If it is happening on all your devices then changing your phone is not going to make any difference. It sounds like a problem with the email account.
