I think Obama’s likability is a big part of what made the 2008 and 2012 election episodes come so easy to Matt and Trey, and that’s also what makes their 2016 fumble all the more sad because you can tell they genuinely thought Hillary Clinton would win even though she did not have the likability that Obama had and was just as unlikable (albeit for different reasons) as her opponent.

Looking back it seems like they all just really liked the word change without any context behind it or further detail, or perhaps they were clawing for a reason to tell us why they voted for him lol. The thing I liked about this episode was how worked up everyone was about the outcome of the election, but not only were the candidates not interested in doing anything for them, they also had these trivial, wildly selfish, motivations were for winning. And in the end literally nothing changed about their lives anyways. Just felt very poignant at the time.

I think they were going to slot in and out basically 5/6 smaller pieces. If you watch the episode with that in mind, you can actually SEE/HEAR the precise moments that they'd have inserted a new bit. It makes sense the McCain version wouldn't have been too different. These moments get fjrther between as the episode goes on, so it may be just an artifact of production.

I was about to type out how the president doesn't really have that much power anyway when they get elected but then I remembered the supreme court ruled the other month that the president is basically immune to do anything he wants now. So that's going to be fun when we get a president that really abuses their power. If people thought Trump abusing his presidential power was bad then they're in for a rude awakening now that they can't be charged for anything they do if they do it while they're the current president. The president should not have that much power.

For the unknowing viewer, I think you've forgot to point out the unique aspect of South Park, which is the show's quick episode creation pipeline. Animated shows usually take weeks or even months to make. South Park can and usually get an episode entirely made within a week. This quick production allowed them to make these topical changes within less than a day.

I would argue south park made it's mark as a topical show when they spoofed the Elian Gonzales raid.
