One thing I wish they would've done for Jake Long, is have the first episode of the season dedicated to Jake realizing a slimmer dragon form made it easier for him to fight
@izzy13565 күн бұрын
Agreed, or heck they could've even made the dragon form a puberty/body-dismorphia allegory (depends on how far ya wanna go with it), where it starts off as this "overly idealized" image Jake has of himself that's different from his human form, and the slimmer dragon form could be him becoming more comfortable of his *actual* image of himself and reflecting that across both human/dragon forms
@electrobob9924 күн бұрын
I personally thought it could have made sense for him to have TWO different forms since his mother was an Asian Dragon, while his father was an American human. One taking the theme of Western depictions of Dragons, while the other taking the Eastern Depictions. With their own stat boosts. For the more asian inspired one, he'd be faster and more agile. But weaker in strength and endurance. While the Western style would be stronger and have more endurance. "Oh no I can't fly there fast enough" *Change your form Jake* "Oh right I can do that now!!!" Plus the merch "Buy the form changing Jake Long dragon toy"

A bit of a tirade: When they changed the art style for Jake Long, I remember being super disappointed. I was obsessed with dragons, but found a majority of dragons in western media (specifically directed at children) had lame or goofy dragon designs. But Jake's was cool. I'm mixed race and really related to Jake and his family, especially mixed race (of anything) was kinda unusually in tv shows. It made sense to me that the dragon form would represent his western side since he was the American dragon (we had seen other dragons also reflect the place they came from). Not sure if other mixed kids can relate to this, but an annoying thing to hear growing up whether from people irl or in media make comments to the effect of 'you're not [blank] enough' or that only your nonwhite side matters. So when I saw Jake's new form, which resembles his grandfather's form (totally didn't clock that it was supposed to be a teen dragon), it felt like Jake's American heritage didn't matter at all. Anyway I know it wasn't a big deal, but the experience stuck with me because it was the first time I felt let down by something I related a lot too.
@Id334ler2 күн бұрын
Huh, I never saw him being smaller as a nod to him being a teenager, it might have been though. I just viewed it as his mixed race manifesting in his dragon form. He does look like a mix of a Western and Eastern dragon. I actually prefer the new look and the style in general. I feel in the minority about this though.
@dragonrulr42 күн бұрын
I wish they would have bulked his neck and chest out slight, still as a nod to s1, but also to balance him out a little. He looks like he’s Ganna break like a twig, and I also thought it was him losing his mixed identity
@peucev81662 күн бұрын
i'm mixed race too and that plays a part in why i liked this show so much as a kid. it was the first show ever where i saw the main character and got to say, "hey, they're just like me!" in that particular sense. i think they coulda made him scrawnier without making him look so much like his grandpa, or done a better job picking something more "in between" western and chinese dragons. it woulda been wayy smoother if they hadn't changed mid show like that, too lol. still loved the show, though :)

@malum9478Күн бұрын
the reason "only the nonwhite side matters" is because that's how race works. you're not "half white", no one is, that's the whole point of whiteness--that's why the concept was invented in the first place. you can be "half-german" or "half-irish" or "half-italian", but there is no such thing as "half white". what people are trying to tell you when they say "only your nonwhite side matters" is, "whiteness is not a culture in and of itself, it is the term we use to signify the top of the ingroup hierarchy in the global hegemony we all know as 'white supremacy', and you, by virtue of that hierarchy's codification, are explicitly denied from belonging to that group".

What I find strange about Jake Long's art style change is how it affected the Huntsclan's design. For season 1, the art style was a bit more grounded with the character designs, whereas season 2 went a bit more exaggerated with the designs to enhance the magical creatures' design more. Most of the character's designs of these seasons fit these approaches however there are a few exceptions to this status quo and one of those characters is the Huntsclan. In season 1 the Huntsclan design is weirdly way more exaggerated in season 1 with the glowing eyes and hoods, but then their entire aesthetic changes in season 2 to have a more grounded approach to the design with a basic uniform for all the characters in the clan. The season 1 Huntsclan design philosophy fits more in season 2, and 2's philosophy fits better in 1, I'm not sure why that's the case but I thought it is fun to point out.

A bunch of Cartoon Network originals did that... they had their original run, then took a break, maybe made a movie, and then came back with a new look. Dexter's Lab, Powerpuff Girls (not talking about the reboot), and Johnny Bravo. For Dexter and Powerpuff, I felt like the redesigns coincided with a drop in overall quality. Even though I didn't like the Johnny Bravo redesigns, I think that show got funnier during that period. To make things more confusing, Johnny Bravo had a Christmas special later on that brought back the Season 1 look for some of the characters.

One thing of note about style changes I have is the show "Chaotic" They went from puppeted American style flash animation to anime inspired frame by frame animation. Now this is very interesting because as far as I know it's far faster, easier, and cheaper to work with flash puppeting. So the art style shift between season 1 and 2 of Chaotic is a bit crazy in that regard because usually we see the style change for the sake of cost, but this was the opposite. I wonder why that was.

For CN I think the heavy influence and traction of kids forced to watch Teen Titans Go! Is what made many of the 2016 shows look the same and feel that way, CN definitely gambled thinking “all kids love this show so all WE gotta do is pump more shows like this” which failed, I can forgive shows like American Dragon, Ben 10 Omniverse and OK KO as those shows work for what you expect, but The Powerpuff Girls 2016, Ben 10 2016 and the boastfulness of Teen Titans Go celebrating being the longest running show also showing this is why these changes have happened is where I think CN really took a nose dive. At least with Gumball, Regular Show, Steven and Infinity Train they all were unique and aimed to go for the older audiences as if they are saying “we see you”, the cutesy, baby style just feels like the network is actively calling you stupid saying “yeah we aim for kids but we do this so you don’t watch it” and I think that’s wrong as if shows like Bluey or the CN renaissance showed there’s a whole audience group that would watch it if you don’t actively make your shows not even tolerable to sit through, like at least with shows that aim for kids at 3-7 they know it, but the kids who are 9-12 don’t need to have brain rot both online and on TV it’s just not fair.

The same thing can happen for video game franchises though. Just take a look at Mega Man X's art style from X1-X3 then go to X4-X6, and the biggest change was from Capcom's X1-X7 into Mega man Zero, where Inti Creates chibified all of the characters, but I at least appreciate that Inti Creates tried to make it make sense in the lore, where the reason why they gave Zero more humanoid proportions, and that they even replaced his arm cannons to give him an actual gun, was because they were going for a look that made Zero and the other reploids look like armored humans, with the vests and helmet and stuff, which is why I can get behind the look change, since it just meant that technology evolved so much from the X series to the Zero series in the 100 years between the series, where Zero was able to become more human like, and its the reason why he even has synthetic muscles, I also appreciate the fact that they removed his disturbing breast like looking green gems from the chest area...

Might as well... honestly, I LOVED the change to Jake's dragon form. I also thought that it changed due to his Chinese-American heritage. More specifically, his dragon form changing to a similar form to his grandpa's; much like how in The Legend of the Dragon Tooth (season 1), Hailey's dragon form was purplish during mid-transformation, but was pink in season 2. It changed as she got older to fit her personality, but would probably change again when she gets older. I say would because it could be a possibility. This is all a theory.

I never thought of the American Dragon body styles as "buff" and "skinny". I always saw them more as looking like European dragons and Asian dragons, which is why I didn't like the change in body style. Jake had mixed heritage, so it made sense for his dragon form to look different than his Grandpa's. Their snouts and body styles felt like meaningful character design grounded in the story. I didn't mind the other art style changes (even though I did think they were uglier, I would've still watched it), but the change in body style made me lose interest in the series when I was a kid.

He has old toys, and the entire series on dvd, which the two of us have watched all the way through together multiple times. But when the 2011 reboot came out he LOOOVED it. He immediately started buying toys again, some to collect, most to give to his son, and bought the season on dvd as soon as it was available. One of his favorite changes was, in fact, the art style, he said it fit the characters and the vibe of the story much better, and that even though he'll always love the original, the reboot is objectively the better show. We were both heartbroken when it was canceled. My uncle even signed an online petition to have it uncancled, despite absolutely hating computers. Even to this day he still talks about how much he'd love for it to come back. So there are definitely original fans that vibe with the reboot, new art style and all

I think why people hated the new design of Jake's Dragon form is simply just because of the drastic, seemingly without reason, change. We grew accustomed to the s1 design so its gotta be bad if they suddenly decided to completely revamp the s2 design. Its kinda like logo redesigns, you just fell in love with the original so whatever comes next will be put down subjectively. Maybe jt would have worked with just fewer changes, while keeping the original feel to it.

Not only is it an outlier from KC's other work, but it's obvious it was cutesy-ied up for marketing purposes. They stripped away everything that made "Rugrats" one of the most visually unique and creative cartoons of the 90's, so they could sell more toys.

On Ben 10, the reboot is actually pretty good. I found myself pleasantly surprised by it when I gave it a real chance, though the art style doesn't feel right and some of the redesigns aren't the best (Stinkfly could be an entirely different alien).

i agree with you here, the ben 10 reboot is actually very underrated another thing to mention, i like how the reboot actually takes the budget it didn't spend on the artstyle, directly to the animation quality. its doing exactly what spectacular spider-man did: have a simple artstyle but fluid animation

I'm mixed on whenever a cartoon changes art styles.

With Jake Long it makes no sense cause they said they wanted him to look more his age as a dragon but then there's an episode where he turns into an adult and his form doesn't change shape at all

I was one of those that really liked the Batman redesign. I always like more stylization to make a series (or universe) unique enough to know where it’s from even if you don’t know the character. I have a dream they’ll to that kind of redesign to gargoyles and reanimate it while they work on new seasons.

5:40 Ok that's where he loses me a bit, while TNBA's style has become the default of the DCAU, the Batman TAS designs is the one fans have always latched on too.

When I was watching the show I didn’t mind the art style change in season two but rewatching multiple times I felt like should have kept the design for the huntsman villain group and Jake’s dragon designs should have been reversed

DUDE!! I thought I was the only one who loved Ben 10: Omniverse's design! That iteration's design were so cool, I could never understand why all the backlash.

Jake Long's dragon form change from season 1 to 2 will forever be the most annoying to me, I remember how much I hated it. I actually stopped watching the show. All these years later, it's more absurd if you think about his parents. His mother is Chinese-American and his father is White, so the buff form from season 1 could be a nice nod to western depictions of dragons, and tie dragon forms to genetics in ways that would add depth to the whole phenomenon. His grandfather being fully Chinese, has the longer slimmer build associated with eastern depictions of dragons. But in season 2, they erased what made this whole dissonance between his and his grandfather's dragon forms interesting. The S1 to S2 change feels like cultural erasure, removing one half of jack's heritage for a rebrand? I personally don't think the producers meant to do anything bad, but they could have done more to research dragons outside of the original concepts. In todays age of reboots of old series, I hope they choose the S1 dragon form if a sequel is ever considered. Also, make the Australian dragon an Aboriginal Australian or part Aboriginal. I get they wanted to avoid making Fred Nerk as such, because they feared having him be an antagonist would be a no-no. But that doesn't matter, since he winds up becoming buds with jake in the end anyway? Again, they scrapped having Jake duke it out with an Aboriginal Australian in The Dragon Summit, only to have him whitewashed AND become friends with Jake? I guess they never thought about this, they should have stuck with Fred being an Aboriginal Australian if this was supposed to be his arc of rival to friend in that episode.

There is two things. Art style and design. And sometimes one show changes both independently. The Jake Long changed the whole DESIGN of the dragon, not just art style. But I want to go back to what I said earlier. When the show changes both art style and the design. Dragon Ball. The style of the characters changed a lot. Goku from the big eyed, more cartoonish character became more serious looking guy. And not only that, but there is a lot of different art style changes in how Toriyama drawn characters, their muscles, shadows and stuff. Even the SSJ itself. But Dragon Ball also introduced design change, but not design of particular character, but... the whole world. Original Dragon Ball had more villagey, cozy vibes. The background characters were more cartoonish and simple. But with introduction of Z, they quickly became more city folks-like. And while there still were some more cartoonish characters, most of them became less cartoonish. Like look at the audience of the Tenkaichi Budokais in Dragon Ball: 21st, 22nd and 23rd. And the one held in Buu Saga. There is less random animals, less chubby characters and so on. EDIT: 11:05 Lol, I literally thought you put the Animaniacs or Tiny Toons clip here and wanted to make some example in these cartoons. But then you mention how she doesn't look like out of Animaniacs anymore. She really did! You are so right. EDIT2: Also I may not be talking about Bugs Bunny designs, but I did talk (or rather think, because I didn't have anyone to actively discuss it with) about Tom and Jerry's designs. Like I don't like the very first one, when Tom looks like an actual quadruped cat, but I also don't like one of the newer one, from the '60s. I prefer Tom & Jerry 45-58 art styles. They are different, but they are the best to me. And I always loved them this way. That guy who mentioned that nobody talk about Bugs Bunny underrate how kids perceive the things like this. And actually kids hate even the smallest changes. Because they think it's something off. Kids like something they've been used to. Some changes are indeed minor and doesn't matter over time, but there are changes that DOES matter. EDIT3: I never watched Ben 10. Or rather never watched it actively. I've seen some few random episodes and that's it. But the 2016 version? FFS, this looks like these videos for kids around toddler's age with nursery rhymes. LITERALLY. I sometimes searched for nursery rhymes, because I liked the song and it was kinda too childish (because they are not necessarily have to be that much childish, like Twinkle Twinkle for example, it's just nice tune, it doesn't need childifying) and the art style of characters were similar to 2016 look of Ben 10. Like bruh. And I generally hate the modern art style, because it's cheap excuse to make the design worse. And not just much worse. It's like they deliberately make it as bad as possible. I don't mind change in art styles and designs, as long as they don't remove some important features. But modern cartoon designs are worse than even the dumbest design or art style change. I hate second season Jake Long, but it's not that bad to hate the show and cringe when I see it. But anything like Duck Tales or that modern Ben 10? That's really insulting. EDIT4: Speaking of Scooby-Doo. My favorite art style is when Shaggy didn't have eyes. I mean, sclera. It was simple and unique. Giving him the sclera made the art style look more serious/modern, but I still prefer the original. But I don't hate on the newer styles. Unless we are talking about these super modern styles.

It's funny because I saw in a panel online that Dante Bisaco has gone on record saying he likes season 1 art style more than season 2. I am so divided when it comes to the series as I love season 1's art style, but season 2's story telling is so much better.

To be fair, that's probably cause the changes were relatively minor (In that the changes didn't drastically altered their overall look when taking the show as a whole).
