Just fortify to eastern Australia in that situation. The threat to the +7 asia is bigger than the threat to the +5 north america, so the bot prioritizes that. But if you have nothing on the border, bot puts a 5 down to break.

Card taking as you tell me is important, especially late game when they are worth a lot in progressive. It's probably too late for them, they just were not aggressive enough in the african theater, and wasted troops in asia. They also ignored an unclaimed save for purple north america. During that attempt, Pete defeated 45 troops and lost 36. Certainly not great dice, but not terribly bad dice either. With a 59 stack, he had to march through 4 territories and 21 troops and THEN defeat oranges 53. I don't think you can reasonably expect to easily have that kill.

I think had you broken Siam plus India or China the bot would have prioritized killing Orange instead since he was bordering North America. Letting it hold Asia on your border was the nail in the coffin.
