One thing that stands out to me about Jordan and only adds to his "inarguable" designation as GOAT is @ 1:23 after being blocked on the other end, he hustles back down on defense and gets the rebound and is trying to call a TO. He's not on the other end pouting, he's fighting, giving all he has, trying to win until the last tenth of a second has run off. That right there separates him from almost every other superstar in history not named Larry Bird.
@MrMattyswift4 жыл бұрын
@Curly Que name one other superstar other than Larry Bird that would have hustled down the floor after getting his game tying shot blocked with 5 seconds left. You think LBJ would? Kobe? Magic? Tim Duncan probably would have though. Not saying those players didn't or don't give consistent great effort, just saying in that particular situation only a few to none would do what MJ did

MJ wasn't above getting his ass handed to him. If anything he welcomed getting taken to school cause motivated him to be better. As a kid who read box scores on the 80s to keep track of the NBA, I remember seeing the numbers Bernard King put up and often double-checking becuase they didn’t seem possible. This man would throw up 40 pts the way some guys get 15. He was feared universally and basically as unstoppable as anyone I ever saw. I only saw him a couple times a year cuz I was on the West Coast and we didn’t have the coverage you have now, but BK was like a feared urban legend and god help you if he came to play your team because he would torch them and there wasn’t a fuckin’ thing your best defender could do about it. Not. A. Damn. Thing.
@BillyBob-ec5ox2 жыл бұрын
Absolute true story. Every legend from that era says the same thing. You couldn’t stop that baseline shot. Ever. You either backed off and took the chance, or fouled him. He would have whole starting lineups in foul trouble. And you’re right about the 40. He would get his 40 off like 60% or more shooting. Not the same that you would typically see Kobe or AI get it. They shot a lot more. This guy had back to back 50 point games off 70% shooting between the two games!

King has one of the highest offensive IQs of all time. His game was based on mathematical equations that he would devise for each scenario. He based every possession off the defense played on him. He basically created his own grid for the court. He had a set of moves designed for each section of the court, and then a counter move for every type of defensive plays. It’s insane to hear him go into detail about it.

Now I don't even consider him a top ten player. All the people riding his jock have led me to find holes and weaknesses in his game. And there are plenty of them. 4:53 “Something would happen that Nobody would expect”??? U can tell when someone has grown up watching and living in an environment were Basketball is part of Everyday Life , such as the Hood were Bernard King is from and someone whose been a Fan from afar (like ppl who started watching Basketball because of Michael Jordan and don’t really no much else about anyone else) ... Now if U were a True NBA Fan U would know that EVERYONE FEARED BERNARD KING .... By the time Jordan got to the League Bernard had already played 7 Seasons , So Mike never got to play against him in his Prime ... BK got Badly injured the year MJ came in the League , then he didn’t play for like 2 Seasons after ... Then he came back from an injury which at the time was considered “Career Ending” (No one prior to King had ever had a Successful comeback after such an injury) and was still Better than Most “Stars” in the League .. He was returned to an AllStar plus was able to win some games with the Bullets ... Anybody doubting How Great he was better go look at that Famous Poster from back in the days with Bernard King sitting on a Throne and Larry Bird and Magic Johnson are bowing to him 👑

Yup. Bernard King came back and the Knicks took a pass on him so he vowed to become an all star again; a tall order back then because athletes just didn't come back the same after an ACL surgery. There's NBA fans and there's NBA historians, if you watch the game because of Jordan you're a fan. Or if you pronounce Chicago with a hard ch. I'm from Chicago and that really annoys me. Pretend it's Shicago. All these Jordan videos are very well made, but mispronouncing the city he played in for so long detracts from the video and doesn't credential well as a historian.

I heard of BK... But don't think one great scoring night against the Bulls necessarily qualifies. He never put up the consistent numbers that Jordan managed and that sorta disqualifies him for such accolades. Was he good? Undoubtedly yes. Was he the underrated Michael...... No. Still, that's a helluva night when you block Jordans game winner, are directly responsible for fouling both Pippen and Grant out, and outscore MJ.
@vulgartech91924 жыл бұрын
@@nwchrista I think he may have been more consistent if he hadn't gotten hurt. And he would never be on any all-NBA defensive team, for sure. But he routinely scored over 20 a night before he tore his ACL, he wasn't some flash-in-the-pan player. And he played in New York, a notoriously challenging venue to play in.
@nwchrista4 жыл бұрын
@@vulgartech9192 ... Also, that was the home opener. Sometimes, even the great one gets a punch in the mouth as a wake-up call. I'd like to see how he faired against them mid season. One thing about these videos that comes to mind... Click bait.
@nwchrista4 жыл бұрын
@@vulgartech9192 again, not saying he wasn't very good. Just saying that he probably wasn't worthy of the highest accolades afforded him by this video and your comment. At 6'7", he was a handful for Jordan on defense for sure. He clearly understood his role as a scoring machine and knew how to use his body offensively beyond shooting, as evidenced by the foul trouble Pippen and Grant succumbed to. Not to mention, Jordan himself. ... And I don't pretend to be some kind of basketball genius at a whopping 5'7" tall... Lol

I dont ever recall KING destroying MJ. I know its gets clicks which pays the bills but at least be accurate. He destroyed the bulls on that season opener and it was great game to watch. I enjoyed every minute of it. It was no surprise KING destroyed the bulls. The surprise was that KING was able to still play at that level.

Very nice video. King played a role in the Bulls starting the 1990-1991regular season 0-3 and the final moments of that game were briefly captured in the Bulls 1991 championship video “Learning to Fly”.

Bernard King averaged 55 games per season over 16 seasons. Two of his seasons his ppg fly off the chart, although a closer look at usage rate shows why. For the most part, his teams weren't that good. Some of the time King's defense (smart stats, not personal eye test) wasn't that good. However, he had several years were he did contribute on both ends of the court. One of the most notable things about King was that he started playing before the 3 was even legal. Back when he started average teams were probably shooting around 44-45%, and that because of their centers shooting closer to 50%. Bernard King was a tad light on FTAs per FGAs (didn't drive as much as other high scoring superstars) but was one of the best mid-range shooters to ever play the game with overall shooting percentages routinely at or over 55%. Loved seeing his stroke in this game. Can't imagine how much better his shot would be today when you can't lay much of a hand on someone.

One can only wonder what King would've achieved had it not been for his injuries. Lightning quick release and deceptive offensive moves. Amazing!

Bernard King is the exact definition of a complete elite basketball player, highly talented, high IQ and trained his ass off in order to change his game to adapt to his loss of explosiveness and athleticism, Drexler was the one after him who also could change his game after a career-ending injury. Too bad Grant Hill wasn't able to do the same with his ankle injury. This is why it's so frustrating to see player like Howard having to waste years in piss-poor team when he could have started to shoot the outside shot earlier than this season. It really makes you appreciate players who completely adapted their game without being forced to by an injury like Brook Lopez, he was the best low-post scoring big man for a few seasons and a good defender when playing at the Nets.

Growing up in NY I got to see LT, Dr. K, Strawberry, but my greatest joy was Bernard King. On free tv you got to see him every night dump 40-50 points on Bird's Celtics, all of the Pistons (Isaih, Laimbeer, Mahorn, Dantley, Maguire), Dr. J, anybody that came to the garden knew most likely Bernard would drop at least 40. Your house too. Watch the Knicks vs Pistons with Bernard. (Playoffs)

Latrell Sprewell was going off in the 90s. Nobody mentions that. He had a run of 40 point games that rivaled MJ and Kobe.

Spree was one of my favorite players in that era because he was so tenacious in the open court, very athletic, and had a nastiness to him. Very inconsistent shooter tho... around 42% career😯

Bernard King, great player! He was probably the pioneer of the baseline fadeaway. I'd be interested to see what happened the next time he played Jordan though. Suffice to say, MJ had the last laugh as he won his first Championship that season.

Testament to his greatness. Jordan, Pippend and Grant all guarded Bernard that night. I assume they switched Pip to him because Mike had three fouls. He then proceeds to foul out Pippend and Grant!!

The only problem with this video is that is that Jordan guarded on several shot attempts on the floor not exclusively as they rotated defenders on king. Also, we did not see king guarding MJ one on one at all. The title should read Bernard king destroys the bulls. It’s should also be noted that Bernard king was never known for his defense. Hence him never being selected to the all defensive first team or all defensive team. He is was more James harden like then like MJ. And if anyone really knows basketball it’s easier to score when you only use your energy on one side of the ball/offensive side.

One of the best Shooting Guards to ever laced them up . Not surprising he gave MJ trouble and ever one else for that matter. He was a very smart crafty player . He could come at you some many different ways. It was over when he got you on the low post . Even after that ACL injury he was successful. He did that because of his skill set. He was never very athletic, but he could beat you with skill and being crafty. I believe MJ incorporated a little bit of that in his game later in his career after he lost his athleticism.
