In 2018, when I first got into bands like The Strokes and The Libertines, I remember reading that the bands were compared a lot in the early 2000s and not understanding why; because on a musical level, the bands couldn't be more different, as Nick Valensi said. However, for marketing reasons, it makes a lot of sense, and I think it's clear that without The Strokes bands like The Libertines would have remained underground indie bands and never achieved anything close to mainstream success. I'm glad the boys rejected Gordon Raphael as that would have been tantamount to failure as well, as you say. Luckily The Libertines went their own way and are still inspiring people to this day, least of all me. Peter's writing and poetic spirit have been very influential for me as a writer and artist, with my music but also with how I aspire to be as a person. The Albion sails on course!

Something you missed out, and that i think may have been the same incident where Julian walked off after 10 mins, was that when both bands were hanging out backstage Pete asked if anyone wanted some crack, and that was when their camaraderie ended - Julian was not into that at all. It was either Carl or Pete who related that story, and it mustve been in an old NME as I havent read any of those books

The Libs don't sound anything like The Strokes IMO. The libertines are more raw and shambolic with deep, interesting and heart-felt lyrics. Where as The Strokes are much more polished and precise with much more focus on the melodic sound of their songs. Both brilliant bands but other than the fact they look alike and dress alike, very different.

I saw the Strokes and White Stripes in 2001 in London. White Stripes were incredible live - it was the De Stijl tour and they played a tiny venue in Camden. Didnt need tio know the songs to be blown away by them. I remember speaking to Jack on stage after they finished, which just shows how they were yet to blow up. Saw The Strokes earlier I think, at an NME showcase at the Astoria, few other bands played that night too. Nice, but I didnt know the songs and the sound was a bit dirgy. Got into them much more from their records alongside early Indie Sleaze stuff, electroclash anti-folk etc it that mashed together surprisingly well. It was quite literally years later that I heard about the libertines whilst at college, but really had gotten past that type of indie stuff and had discovered Drag City records, so just saw the libs as a bit silly. Also couldn't stomach the mockney 'lad' image they presented and their fanbase, who all seemed like bellends from Camden market. Have to admit today though that the libs arent as bad as I felt at the time. Fun band with loads of drama. Still think theyre bellends, but ive a soft spot for them now.

I’m a Yank, Loved strokes!! But that whole romantic English poet thing along with the chaos that Peter caused was glorious!! In the end the strokes producer , Gordon was scouted and hung with the libs. Just read his memoir 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽. His Book sorts out all the ( strokes / Libs ) interactions. I think Peter is a true thespian and vaudevillian always recreating his existence and direction . Julian more concise and perfectionism in high order .👍🏽

Both pete and julian come from a similar sort of rich-military-mum-at-home upbringing, while looking at life through looking glasses, Julian in New york, pete in britain, both obviously big readers when young, and thinkers, they both worked in hospitality during their writing periods. Both drinking from the same fountain of velvet underground, oasis, the beatles and that whole mainstream media of the late 90s, both just learning to commjnicate Through phones etc, so a lot of common ground in that sense, both sort of observers at the big party that was the late 90s,and channeling it out (bartending, which both did, necesssrily makws you comprise informstion within a really short time frame in words). Pete's definitely more of a poet whereas Julian is more of a witty joker, obviously with the strokes coming in first a lot of lines unintentionally stay in the global imaginarium, as could be thelines like let me go in dont look back..., or "keep it together,... Life never ending" which definitely show in lyrics from the modern age byj the strokes, and others. So, both great amazing bands, Julian has more of a less cosmovisual perspective and goes into different branches of mundane life whereas pete is more all encompassing, which could maybe be tied down to pete growing more time in small towns
@cobeyc.b5946 Жыл бұрын
Julian is actually rich, Pete is middle class. Pete reads, Julian drinks. Pete is happily married to woman his age, Julian is… google it. Very different people and in a way that one is a lyrical genius and the other is lucky to write a set of lyrics that doesn’t interfere with the music.

The longevity of the Strokes over the Libertines and what happened to them says it all. The Libertines were a glorious rock and roll / punk flash in the pan fucked up by drugs in the end and a lack of inspiration. The Strokes were basically the Sex Pistols of that early 00's garage rock wave - when everyone went to see them and got inspired to do their own thing.
@lochlannwass503815 күн бұрын
LACK OF INSPIRATION!!!! Cool video man. Have you read 'Bound Together', the Libs book from about 2005? It's hilarious. Anyway, I reckon 'Up The Bracket' and 'Highly Evolved' (by the hugely underrated Vines) were two of the great rock records of that time (2002/2003), that both still hold up well today. I think all those bands- Strokes, Libs, Vines, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, White Stripes, etc - they all had their own thing going on, and attempting to put them all in the same box sort of reduces the effect each individual band has, or had, as the case may be. It's very limiting, IMO. I saw the Libs in Melbourne in 2004, when Pete had been sacked. Carl and the lads played well, but it was awful without Pete. It was a more innocent time for sure, and everyone was very young, looking back on it now. There were no smartphones or social media, and the internet was still pretty new for a lot of people. Personally, I loved it, as I'm not impressed with what facebook and twitter have done to society. I don't think some kids these days realise how very different it actually was!
@22grandpod Жыл бұрын
Yeah i did read it a long time ago and the Time For Heroes one. Enjoyed them both but it's good hearing it from the horses mouth in Pete's book - still need to read Carls from a few years back. Is a shame Pete never made it to Australia.

I think Julian Casablancas is on a whole other level. Pete Doherty is an interesting reckless dude that had a crazy life... ..but Juilan is a genius that changed the world...been putting out masterpieces for decades...the impact and longevity of the work he's done is just insane. A song like "Human Sadness" just blows my mind. it opens up a portal through music. And just as a person i don't trust Pete Doherty. But Julian on the other hand . his energy heals. his existence has helped my life alot.

I don't get the strokes..never did I never thought they where not as musically essential as everyone made out.. I mean take "last night" it is just the same old 5th chords and a bit of a solo then that's it,. as the libertines actully had unusual guitar lines,..they had this whole thing where you could tell they can play underneath an ashtetic that sounded amateur...punk amateur yes genial all at thd same time.. like they where locked in a room listening to their favourite records and beating their guitars into submission for an (their) approximation.. which was a lot more interesting to me personally..the two bands where not the same and I'm grateful they are not.. The white stripes got compared to the strokes at that time too believe it or not but even then I thought the white stripes where much more iimportant..I mean I a white boy selling blues to young people is one hell of a trick...what did the strokes really do??
