Aiden did a great job. I love this movie. I dont think it ever received the recognition it deserved. For those that dont know the movie, it is called the song catcher.

Everyone is not blessed with a perfect singing voice and I am glad of it. People sing to express their feelings and a perfect pitch is not necessary. I think this is beautiful.

When the Mountains Cry A lie that comes on a poison thorn,it has roots all dirty and torn! Youg'ens playen as the black crow flies,Mama's weapin hear the Montains cry! There was another, A wild dark flower, cold was her heart, in its darkest hour. Tears on the ground where her love did die,Neith the bloody moon, hear the mountains cry Oh dig his grave narrow and deep,Lay a jug of whisky by his thursty feet And lay two pennies on his Rovin eyes Two Woeman Whaile as the mountains cry

To the posters who criticize this version of this song ... Have you seen The Songcatcher? This version is perfect for its context. The voice sounds strained which makes it perfect to express the strains and sadness of loss that comes with the events in the movie that lead up to this moment.

I love this movie so much, and have watched it more than 20+ times and have to buy it. And this song - captivating. I'm from the Northeast, and for the most part, we're faster paced here, and sort of combative. I've never taken to a movie as much as I have the Songcatcher. I wish there was a Part 2, and 3 and 4 . ...

I assume this is Aidan Quinn. I was disappointed this wasn't on the album because, like tm13tube, I think it doesn't matter that he doesn't have much of a voice as this version fitted perfectly in the movie, which was what the point of it was. This is a fantastic movie, incredibly moving, evocative of a time and place, very sad and yet life-affirming. And this was one of the most moving songs in it.

The fact that his voice or rendering, isn't perfect is the whole point, that so many miss! Those who can only play strictly by reading music only, tend to be that way. All technical & unable to add or express their own emotional brand onto a song, where others can hear it. Music readers are often very different types of players and don't understand those who can't read music, or how we can play at all.

2:30 I've never seen this movie but I tend to analyze videos and movies alot. The woman on the left didn't want the woman on the left to go, judging by the way she was almost rapid eating she was nervous/anxious to asking her to, "stay with (me), we need another teacher". Followed by a slight sigh as if she already knew her attempt to coax her to stay was futile. "I didn't think you would", followed by another anxious bite. "Hmph". The woman on the right recognizes her inner frustrations/sadness and calmly says, " I shall miss you"., followed by an immediate hug to break the tension and express her love, as it will likely be the last time she sees her. The woman on the left caught of guard with a surprised gasp, taken in by the hug, and instantly embracing it. *Squeezes tightly* "I will miss you, too" I love it!

@ballsnotrequired - I had to reply to my comment due to utube error. You're right, all I could find were covers by other utube users. What is more strange is I'm born and raised in the Northeast urban jungle as we call it and this movie and all the music blew me away. I don't recall how I found it, probably browsing Cablevision or the worse cable company on earth beside Verizon, is Comcast, before they got too damn greedy and I removed cable entirely. So I bought the DVD and watched it, idk maybe 20 times so far 😊 Take care.

I don't know if "butcher's" is quite accurate, but I do think the off-key version is for effect. You can tell that A.Q. can sing well, he's just not. You have to consider that in early America, song was a language & entertainment. Some of the best bluegrass is sung by non-professionals with unrefined voices, but it is just that haunting, breaking tone that IS bluegrass. Bluegrass by it's very nature is earthy and was never meant to be songs that "put on airs" or as properly said "aires".

Lyrics A lilac grows, on a poison thorn, It has roots, dirty and torn. Youngins’ a playin’ as the black crow flies, Mama’s weepin’, when the mountains cry. There was another, a wild dirt flower, Cold was her heart and dark as dire. Tears on the ground, as her love did die. Neath’ the bloody moon, when the mountains cry. Oh dig his grave, oh dig his grave, A narrow and deep, a narraow and deep, Set a jug of whiskey, by his thirstin’ feet, And lay 2 pennies on his roamin’ eyes, Two women wailing, When the mountains cry. Oh the wind grows weary, and the willows sigh… Rivers of sorrow, when the mountains cry Oh the wind grows weary, and the willows sigh… Rivers of Sorrow, When the mountains cry. Rivers of Sorrow, When the mountains cry. If you haven’t seen The Songcatcher, I highly recommend it.

@ferociousgumby I don't think songs like this (especially sung over this type of incident) are so much about pitch as they are about the emotion in the voice, and the reaction they invoke in those listening. Quinn puts some decent emotion into this scene.

Our culture has become so warped and spoiled by technology that demands that all artists be perfectly on pitch all the time. If you hear the old recordings, such as Dogg Boggs and others, none of them were "good" singers by our standards. If you remember, none of the people in the mountains were professionally trained in the traditional sense. They sang how they sang, and they were appreciated for it. The ruggedness and imperfection is what make it beautiful.

Singing abilities is not nearly as important as the under current of emotion, as stated above, and Quinn does I think a respectable job, especially for a "non-singer." It's all about the feelings and the lyrics. A simple voice for a simple song for simple people.
