Last night as the Tampa Bay Lightning came into Philadelphia, we had an odd one to say the least. We got a power outage just 6 minutes into the first period. Ironically, the Flyers actually tweeted before the game to "bring the electricity"... But I have never seen something quite like it, as the after a brief delay, the NHL decided to play on in the dark. So that meant we had players not knowing when to come out of the penalty box, the refs were late to come out for the 2nd period as they didn't have a clock and just overall, a very interesting throwback to 70s 80s era hockey with the shadows and dim lighting. As for the game, the Flyers played a great game while Vasilevsky struggled for the Lightning. I cover it all and more in todays NHL video!

I was at this game! Shit was crazy. It was half the building, the half behind the benches was fine where I was sitting, the other half went completely dark outside of the flood lights. No jumbotron, no music, no PA announcer, no reply cams or mics for the zebras. That Tippett penalty, at the end up the time you hear Vasy banging his stick on the ice and Tippers just doesn't come out of the box. Stoppage in play and like 5 seconds after faceoffs, they let him out. What a wild experience, the jumbotron never came back but eventually the clock/music/announcer was back by the third period.

I still remember the power outage during the Stanley Cup Finals between Boston and Edmonton in 1988. Game Four, score tied 3-3 when a transformer blew in the Boston Garden and the whole place went dark. The game was essentially cancelled as the rules stated that should the game not be able to continue it would be wiped clear and replayed in full at the end of the series should it be required. Didn’t get that far. Edmonton was up 3 games to 0, Game 4 was wiped out by darkness so Game 5 in Edmonton actually became Game 4, and they won 6-3, claiming the Cup.
@WowOafus
@WowOafus 2 ай бұрын
I remember reading somewhere that the area of Boston where the arena was had inadequate electricity production and the arena put it over the limit, causing the transformer to go. I may be remembering it wrong, but was still a crazy night.
@NmDPlm31
@NmDPlm31 2 ай бұрын
@@WowOafus Strangely enough, there was panic in 1990 when the same two teams were playing for the Cup again, and in the third overtime of Game One, lights again went dark in the Garden. Luckily it was just a bank of lights and not a transformer issue on that occasion, and play was able to resume after a 25 minute delay. Like everyone else I remember watching the arena darken and just thought "on no, not again!"

That's crazy! And Mickey Redmond, Red Wings announcer and player from the 70s, was talking during the last post game about playing during the pre-tech age where there were no displays for penalty time for the players in certain arenas. It was just a card held up with "1min", "30sec", "15sec", etc.

2002 Calder Cup Finals at Harbor Yard (Bridgeport Sound Tigers) I don't remember which game of the series, but it went into multiple OT's. At 2300, the main lighting in the arena must have hit an automatic "somebody forget the switch when everyone went home" timer. Middle of play. Took about 10 minutes to get them back on. (also, looking this up reminded me how long ago it was!)

Speaking from the perspective of someone who works at an AHL level arena, I can't help but think of what that must have been like for the workers there, you're at your post in the entrances to the bowl or in the concourse, then the lights go out and you're as in the dark knowledge wise as everyone else, and if you happen to be a concourse worker without a walkie-talkie, well then you're really at a loss of what's happening. I can only imagine how bad it'd be for the elevator staff (cause if that arena is anything like the one I work at, we have a person assigned to sit in each of the 2 elevators and press the buttons for people the entire night, no power = stopped elevator). Theres just so much that goes into running an arena on every level of staff so I can only imagine the confusion.

Kinda seems like one of the many games I played as a kid and the clocks wouldn't work. Not necessarily because the power went out, but we were outside, and the clocks would freeze.
