That's not how you take a loss. You must turn around quickly, pretending someone called you and "accidentally" knock over the game board with your arm. Won't work if your opponent has photographic memory though.

One time, at primary school, we had a chess class during the lunch time. I played a guy and i was winning (It was mate in 1) but my opponent had more time on his clock than dinner time. I had no choice but to offer a draw, because if the game didn't end, it wasn't considered in the score. I got 9.5 out of 10 this year.

Great game by Steinitz, 60 years old at the time of this game (well, technically 59 but close enough) yet his mind was still very sharp. von Bardeleben apparently was very salty that there was a checkmate in 12 but instead of just resigning he just lets the clock expire?! Stay salty, sir. 🤣🤣 After the skewer on the king and queen mid-sequence I guarantee you many players will snatch that queen before you can say 'zugzwang' not realizing the back rank mate Black threatens. Another lesson on not being greedy. 😁😁

Yes, and it should be noted the queen moves (Qf7 and Qxh7) are interchangeable, just that ...Kf8 happens before the final blow.

Bardeleben didn't leave because he couldn't take a loss, according to W.H.K. Pollock he left the hall without resigning and allowed his time to run out because of the disturbance caused by spectators applauding winners of games, and he informed Steinitz personally of this.
