Was a waitress in my younger years. Been there, done that. Received flowers from a couple of guys who thought I would go out with them, when I didn't even know their names. But what's worse than guys flirting, is the girlfriend who treats you like shit because she thinks you're going to steal her man. I am literally here trying to give you a nice dining experience so that you will give me a decent tip so I can support my child. That's all.

I had a customer get called to a different cash register to check out and on the way past me looked me up and down and whinged, "I wanted the hot cashier!" Then made an actual slurping noise at me 😲 On the other hand, I met my husband working the same job. Met him a couple of times and had some good chats. Then he called my store and asked for me. Asking someone out while they're working can very easily be creepy and stalker-ish, but he stayed on the right side of that line for me. He just asked if I remembered him, I said yes. Then he said he thought I was smart, cute, and charming and wondered if he gave me his number would I call him. I said I would. I did. Best 16 years of my life so far!

Well that's the fun part. There's obviously a line and while it's very much getting crossed here, generally all courting behaviour is perceived as creepy when you're not into it and cute and romantic when you are. The tricky part is figuring out which one it is from the person you're into, before you make too much of a fool of yourself. Most people are pretty bad at this, because it does take some blind courage and practice but not too much. Fortunately, if the other person is really into you as well, they'll be pretty forgiving of your goofy antics. Just know when it ain't happening. xD

I've worked customer facing retail and the number of times people have confused "nice" with flirting is just trauma. I've literally have had to use every line the lady had to use trying to politely then not so politely turn some one down before too. It's awkward and half the time you can't just walk away without your boss pressuring you not to be rude to customers and "it's just some harmless flirting put up with it." All this and I'm a male can't imagine how hard it is for the female staff.

It's really not that black and white. They're still humans too and as you can tell from some comments here, occasionally it does work. Just don't do it as extreme or disgusting as this guy. A subtle spontaneous remark or compliment can go a long way. Just get the hint when there's no interest. Plus be especially restrained if the person is enslaved to a tipping culture like this.

Actually had this happen to me when I was in my 20s. I w a s practicing good customer service with a smile and this guy thought I was flirting with him while my husband work only 20 ft away. Was shocked then told him I was married he thought I was a lesbian with the type of ring I wore and that me being married didn't count. I told him to turn around and talk to my husband in produce if he didn't believe me he was quite insistent that I go out with him. When I was in high school, I had a regular who was really into where his bills were printed. Like, which treasury office was on it and which treasurer had signed the design. He was beyond thrilled when I started giving him his change with the bills in numerical order. To this day I can't tell if he was flirting or just really, really weird. This sort of thing happens all the time in any job requiring you to be pleasant and helpful to people! Dunno--apparently a smile and "Hi, how may I help you?" translates to "Please f*** me right now!" Most of the guys were middle-aged or missing a lot of teeth. Sometimes both. However, no matter how attractive the guy is, it sets off every "creep" alert you have when they hit on you while you are just trying to work! Ever get a guy actually grab your hand and refuse to let go when you try to give them back their change? Had to put up with this crap through my teens into my thirties, but when I got significantly older I got young guys flirting with me to try to scam me out of something ("Come on, no one will know if you don't ring up this very expensive item I just put in my pocket right in front of you and the security cameras! I would love to take you out some time! I find overweight women in their 50s VERY sexy")
