Safe sailing.
Boat:
White Shadow is a Van De Stadt ‘Seal’ 36 (11 metres). She is hand made in steel, 2004, with a round bilge (hull) and a modified coach roof. This makes her a ‘one off’ and in my opinion the most beautiful Van De Stadt 36 ever built.
The camera gear:
Main camera is a Panasonic Hc- V770 with a Rode External mic. My old camera is now my number 2 is a Panasonic Hc-v700. Most shots are done with an external mic (Shenggu sg 108) with a sponge and dead kitten attached.
Action stuff and small blogging is done with a Sony Hdr-as30v.
Underwater video Gopro3plus.
Editing:
Final cut pro on a Macbook. Most of the material for each video is filmed over a period of several weeks or so and the editing of each episode is normally done over a day. This process can take longer if original music is used or permissions are needed for copyrighted materials etc. Much time is spent sorting out technical problems. In this case I normally get the help of a younger person who understands computerie stuff!
There are also times when filming, editing and uploading is not possible due to being at sea or in locations with no internet access.
Content:
I have found that filming and releasing material over a period of time is better than doing ‘vlog’ style videos and trying to make episodes out of whats happened in a week, regardless if it’s good content or not. By filming over a period of time I can be more selective in what goes into each video. My aim is to avoid ‘bland and mundane’ and have at least one or two exciting and interesting events in every video. Every video has to be entertaining.
Comments and being at sea:
I love reading your comments. Most weeks Im able to read everyone. I cant reply to everybody but I do read and enjoy them. Keep them coming! There are times that It might seem I'm not on the internet for certain periods, this is normally when Im at sea on passage. While Im out on the Ocean I have completely no communications with the outside World.

The reason why you’re still able sail after thousands of miles alone at sea is that you acknowledge your fears, it’s your constant instinct of survival that kicks in and makes you turn round away from the promise of rest to the safety of the open sea. Thanks for sharing your depths of dispair when things go wrong. The fact that you ‘regrouped’ and found a solution is the characteristic of a survivor. Many would have carried on and risked the boat and possibly foundered. It took courage to stay out at sea for another blustery night. Tiredness, fatigue and exhaustion lead to poor judgement and when you on your own there’s no one to tell you. Well done Barry let’s hope you have many other birthdays to make up for this 🤙

Barry needs to learn the principles of sailing ! His illogical caution is actually causing more problems.. I have never seen his boom sheeted out at all and 2 main sheets gives a wrong shape to the sail. Going slow allows growth under the water-line, which slows the boat even more ! More damage is done by not letting the boat sail to its potential. That anti fouling job was useless. Being inefficient puts more strain on the rig in all points of sail except beating to windward . If beating is scary then reef and sail off the wind a little. Letting sails flap causes damage. The quicker you reach your destination , the quicker you are out of danger. Barry was worried by a fishing boat 200m off his stern. Why ? ... Was he going backwards ?

I did wonder why in earlier episodes he was saying that there was not enough wind to push him along, yet main had 2 reefs and the genoa partly furled, yet in this ep he had it all hung out and was overpowered.

You are right. I think his problems come mostly from a lack of confidence. He is alone and scared and so he cannot use the boats full potential which puts him in danger. He is in over his head and I am worried what will happen if he gets into really bad weather.

Yup - Barry is a great guy and quite a character, but his sailing skills need work, The best book I've ever found for this is a tiny pamhlet that cost's less than $20. Google "Illustrated Sail & Rig Tuning: Genoa & mainsail trim, spinnaker & gennaker, rig tuning" by Ivar Dedekam. It's an amazing little book that demystifies sail trimming. He also needs to learn how to properly reef and de-power that main.

Barry, an old sea dog should know that a "white cap over a red nose" is a pilot. The boat that was standing by was showing the lights of a pilot boat, red light below the white top light (white cap over red nose). Not a stupid fishing boat coming too close, but a friendly pilot boat making sure you are safe. A Van De Stadt design can definitely sail to windward very well. Adding a stay sail to make it a cutter rig reduces that ability, having poor sails even more, being afraid to heel is the final blow if not the dirty fouled bottom would stop you. Take that double rig away and sail the sloop like she was designed by skilful people. Oh yeah that double main sheet system will break soon. Look how bad it is. Makes good drama but is not proper display of seamanship.
@b.w.22
@b.w.22 5 жыл бұрын
Hell yes, that’s how you handle it. A cut fuel line is a nothing problem when things are calm and you have time: forget the problem that will come and handle the problem that is now. I see so often people worried about X or Y happening later and not making the hard but clear choice now to avoid disaster. A lesser man would have fretted about repriming or whatever as he drifted away to a helicopter rescue, or worse, later. Thanks for sharing this boots on the ground, or oars to the sea, situation you found yourself in, your thoughts and fears, and the choices you made. It’s great to see sailing that isn’t all bikini women, heartfelt folk songs, 90ft dives, and rum drinks. Bravo.

I reckon a bypass valve inserted at that position on any boat with a flexible hose and hand primer would be an excellent addition, just in case the dreaded fuel fungi becomes an issue. Carry a couple of large external fuel tanks full of clean diesel too. Also, carry half a dozen spare fuel filters. Good vid Bazza.
@thommw

Why don't you clear the deck for a start if you can't beat to windward? Dive tanks, fenders, buckets, a frigging wave board? Reduce your windage and the performance will improve. Take care, mate.

Wow. All I say is that we empathize and have been there recently. That sick feeling in your stomach when you think all is lost and you have no answers ... sleep deprived and just demoralized. And so often you experience euphoria afterward. But too much of this up and down becomes debilitating, like a girlfriend you keep breaking up with and then getting back together with. Take some time and get as much fixed as you can. Sleep too, for a full day if you can. Continuing on with half functioning systems will become progressively dangerous. Anyway, we love you and wish you the best. KK and W.

Glad you got sorted but for goodness sake when you know something needs maintenance just do it! Also, always carry loads of spare filters/elements so at least they give you options other than cutting into your system. You’ll never get to windward with a headsail! Less headsail more main and you’ll breeze it and also much easier to control a main sheet than a genoa sheet around a winch when you’re solo. Happy sailing!

Hi, if you have to use an external fuel tank. You should put your backflow hose in the canister too. Our engine takes about 4-6 liters per hour normally, but without this backflow "trick" it runned just 45min with 20liters of diesel. So remember both hoses to canister, and it saves you nicely 😋

It takes thought effort and editing to put out a good story. You are a great storyteller and videographer. I hope you are still enjoying your trip.

Barry, a few weeks ago I called your boat a shed. I wasn't being rude, horrible or a Troll. Just very concerned for you. It was obvious something like this was going to happen. Thank God you're not in the middle of the ocean. The fact is, boats are like cars. When they get to that age they start to go wrong and continue going wrong. Every episode lately something is failing or falling off. I just didn't think it safe for the type of sailing you are doing. You are certainly braver than I am and I really wish you the best of luck, despite my reservations. Ian UK Subscriber.

I've been binge watching all your stuff and it's superb! Not the sailing and all that, but the editing and film making. Really, it's the best I've seen in your field. May you have fair winds, and following seas from here on out my friend, and thank you for all your hard work putting these films together.

Hi Barry glad you sorted out problem, but remember when taking diesel out of a tank ,it returns any diesel it don’t need back to your tank. So you were actually filling your main tank from your temporary tank, when cutting into fuel line for temporary repair you need to cut in return fuel to return it to the container you are using. 👍⛵️

Happy birthday Barry! There's a reason smart sailors use a day tank and install a fuel polishing system. You just discovered that reason. Mind you, the even smarter sailors practice not using their engines at all.

@@soylentgreen2065 A day tank is a small 10 or 20 gallon tank that gravity feeds directly to the engine. You pump fuel to the day tank from your main tanks through a heavy duty filter system that filters down to 2 microns...called fuel polishing. This ensures that you always have at least 10 hours of very clean fuel every time you start your engine.

Just watched this today, and I know it has in my "Up next" bar "Chilling on Huku Niva", so logically I always knew you'd come through, but man, I shed a tear when you got that engine working again & saved your own ass. The ingenuity of the sailing KZbinrs I see, when the sh!t hits the fan, it's inspiring. Glad to see you made it!

Great video mate! Allowing everyone to see the frightening emotions of a possible ship wreck was super exciting. But, I must bust your chops. If you knew the tank had trash in it, you should have cleaned that sucker before you went out! Now, get to any port, dump it and clean it! No excuses! Glad you made it!

Barry. God has blessed you, on your birthday. Your motor failed in the safest place possible. You even said if you were a little farther into that anchorage. You would of lost the boat onto the rocks. Remember your cup is always half full. Never half empty... ;)
