When to give up on an outboard motor

This video is about when to give up on an old outboard and just replace it. Eventually an outboard will just be too far gone and fixing it is no longer a good option. In this step of the Green Machine restoration project I remove the old motor from the hull in order to get ready for the new one arriving. Removing an outboard from a boat involves removing the wiring loom, the control cables, the steering cable and the four bolts that secure it to the transom. I then use a standard engine crane to lift it off the back of the boat and put it onto a wooden outboard stand.

Yeah, old outboards are definitely DIY only if you hope to keep them running. The bill will exceed the value of the outboard very fast if you pay a pro to work on it.

When I did a rebuild, I had a feeling it was 1 piston bearing failure. Took it all apart and checked on part availability before I started. Ended up being much cheaper to rebuild the entire outboard than buy a used one or new one. Luckily no damage that couldnt be mended, 2/4 pistons needed to be replaced but other than that good to go. All new seals, gaskets, and some serious cleaning.

I've had great success with Evinrude motors all second or third hand, I've never spent more than a $1000 on one. I use them for a season tune them up and get rid of them to finance the next project. My favorite are 80's- 90's 40-45 hp Evinrude/Johnson our boating season is short so they tend to last longer than most places. I had a 69 Evinrude 18hp that I bought for $120 and turned it into $500 with a half hour of wrenching. Looking forward to your restoration vids of the boat.

There is no doubt you can get great second hand motors, that's for sure. It is a good point about having a short boating season. All the second hand motors around here have been used 365 days a year in salt water, so by the time they are 20 years old they've done a lot of work.

Dangar i like your videos and your honesty. i have a 1978 85 hp Johnson since new and its been on several boats. i rebuilt it 5 years ago the power head that is and taught myself to do it. i have spent 4 grand on this motor. i paid the dealer to completely restore the lower unit and electrical systems. he was reluctant to do the work and as you said he advised buying new. i explained to him that if it were a 1965 corvette would he refurbish it and he said of course. So i said well this is my corvette and i want it restored. He insisted on payment up front which i just reached in my pocket and handed him 3 Grand for his work. i have a lot of sentimental value in this motor. and it has been running for 4 years now better than new. The mechanic is always asking me about the motor as he said he never finds people like me who will spend money on old motors. he was also thankful for the job as he was able to train his two young techs on my motor so they could get the experience. thanks again for the great videos!

lot of guys talk about their engine 'bogging down and sputtering under full power, find out it is not fuel related so could be what? kill switch loose connection? heat sensor? or power pack, how come a good mechanic couldnt figure it out... thank you for time on these videos for us all

Some problems can definitely be tricky to track down. Can be a little cut in the fuel line that starts to suck air at high RPM, can be a coil that can't provide spark at high rate. There are just so many possibilities that ruling them out one by one is the only way sometimes.

All that aluminum dust looks very familiar to me. I have been running a 1989 40hp Johnson for 3 years. This motor was given to me so I have very little money in it and no particular attachment to it. Something under the flywheel is grinding away, that is the source of the dust on my motor. It also has low compression in on of the cylinders and a leaky lower unit. it is time to give up the ghost... I happened across a 2006 40hp Etec for a good price. The best thing about this new motor is that it is basically brand new. It only has 2 hours of run time! The previous owner thought is was too much motor for his boat so he swapped it and the motor has been in the shop for years. It was properly winterized before it was stored. I picked it up for 2500. I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will be ready to pick up tomorrow!

On the ocean. When to give up is a bit different than if you’re on a pond. In my opinion. I can live with the occasional hiccup with my freshwater boat. I have an oar and a trolling motor that can get me to the shore line. On my center console. It stays on the saltwater all summer. If I start having issues while offshore. That’s a totally different animal.

Nice, hopefully I'd see this video before getting into my adventure with my 1968 evinrude boat/motor combination. Actually it was running very well some times but one problem after another killed this idea. Hull and trailer was good like one on the video. In any case everyone needs a starter boat and all of us learn from mistakes.

I used to make aluminum support brace for weak starter mounts bolting to other spots. Also low speed screws can be heated to back out..I grew up on salt water motors in NY...needed torch for everything..Not good for a daily commuter motor though...cheers.

When you cant get jets out or any screws that are stuck, strip the part to metal then take a fire torch and heat it up then throw it into cold water quick change in temperature changes the size of screws and rest of materials that makes it easier to move off the screw

My 2002 Tohatsu 8 hp is all memories now. Ironically it still ran great even with severe corrosion. The head has to be removed to change the thermostat . Once I started turning bolts, things broke and crumbled. The bottom of the power head was fused to the midsection with a fist sized lump of corrosion and mineral deposits. Parts of the power head were completely gone! Mixed feelings that I tore apart a running motor, but I can't imagine it could have gone much longer

I like the omc 2-strokes machines from 1980-1990, 2 cylinders and 40-60hp. If maintained I guess you can use them for generations! Here in Sweden, we dont have a long season, but sure salty water... wait for the evinrude etec G2, and repower!

Yeah, the problem is bad sparks from the spark plugs, I changed the spark plugs and the ignition coils but I still get bad sparks so I am just assuming for that that it will be a waste to pour in more money to fix it and that a change is in order.

I’m at a crossroad right now on my 1990 Johnson GT 175 and it has a serious issue it won’t go over 38 mpg and I believe it’s the reeds engine is fully rebuilt and all new electric s and fresh plugs very well could be the carbs but at this point I’m lost I’m ready to sell it and move on to better things

I've just about had it with my Johnson! Lol! I have a 1977 Johnson 70 hp motor that's giving me fits! I've rebuilt the carbs, swapped out the reed valves, and found a weak coil which I replaced. My timer base seems to have a mind of it's own just taking off at random! I've made/posted 2 videos showing my problem. Yes, as well as breaking the alignment is critical so you would need to build a jig first and even then I'm not what caused it to happen in the first place (an therefore happen again as you say)

Well the engine housings are usually made out of metal alloys not a metal it self, so welding it would probably make a big mess.. Aluminium with some combining components are used in these engines.. Aluminum can be welded by a fast and alu educated welder, but if it is alloy you cant weld it no matter how hard you try.. These engines are molded and drilled. Not everything can be welded. Aluminium and metal alloys are very hard to weld and combine.. They melt rapidly and are tough to control. Impossible to make a good weld by hand if it is alloy mixture. The thread you add will never combine the way the mold will. Your weld will break to hand force. It won't hold at all. Good video, make more of them :D

Thanks for the great videos, do you ever consider the pollution that some of these old motors produce? I guess that goes hand in hand with fuel efficiency. I love recycling old stuff but like my (really) old truck that I kept fixing, it kind of bothered me that it was a bit of a polluter. I loved that truck and really miss it but the frame was rotted, and it was too old for a complete rebuild. So I traded it in.

I much prefer 4 stroke motors because of the pollution side of things. With regards to replacing the old truck or car, it turns out that the pollution created to make the new truck is much more that the old truck would produce for the rest of your life.

Yes, someone also said that to me, so we come full circle, it makes sense in some cases to fix what you have for environmental reasons. I am in construction, and have demolished several old houses to build new homes, and it was many large truckloads to the dump, really a lot of waste. So in a way, I am guilty! Gday mate this is always a worry when you buy a second hand motor , you just never know if it is as good as the seller says it is when i bought a motor for the haines a 50 yam although there were a few cosmetic problems it seemed to be in half reasonable condition but i still did my own maitenance work on it to be happy in my own mind with it ,reliability is everything in an outboard motor if it isnt you will always have that nigling feeling about that problem "will that be ok ?,scrap it for parts try to recoup some of your money and move on is sometimes the best way .

I’m there, $100 for boat and motor. After watching video I notice my 1960s motor seems beefier, like starter motor bracket, but it has been stripped of carbs, coil, bug, wires, and cowling. Also notice my flywheel nut is recessed, seems the old merc was better quality at one time.

Yes, it is very common to see in oil in the lower cowling of a two stroke motor.

I have a 1996 75 hp 2-stroke mariner , and it needs swivel pin bushings replaced. In your opinion is it worth all the work to fix ? Has 130 psi across all three cylinders, and good t&t , super clean under the cowl. but I know it has seen some salt water . What are the odds of tearing it down without breaking bolts ? Should I just run it as is ? Has lots of play .

Hey Dangar, Your videos are so perfect i think I've seen almost every one. I watch them just to learn not that i need to change my dog clutch. lol But this video hits home. I recently gave up on a 50 HP seahorse Johnson that ran great and Have kicked way to much money into its replacement Anyways. What happened was the Gearcase wouldn't split from the midsection because of either driveshaft corrosion or twisted splines. I tried wedges and even cold steel chisiels. I could only get 1/16 separation around the whole thing. I took to a local mechanic he's said i was *&$%ed. In your opinion do you think i gave up to early? I should say I gave up when i saw gas and oil burp, then run down the from of the cowling by the driveshaft, which i thought was the crankseal. THANKS FOR THE AWESOME VIDEOS

Hi Tyrone. This means that the ignition grounding wire isn't connected somewhere. It could be at the key barrel, a broken wire in the loom going to the motor, or the connector at the outboard end. It is generally white on the Yamahas and yellow and black on the Mercs and Evinrudes (I think!)

Hey stu, just found ur channel recently and subbed.. Very interesting vids u have about outboards, I've never looked into them as I've always been an inboard diesel guy. We run a Yanmar 2qm15 diesel inboard on our 16 footer. Not the fastest set up in the world but really reliable never had any issues, admittably our boating season is alot shorter than urs. Have u considered diesel outboards like from say Yanmar? Never used em myself but I've seen people with that sort of set up. Their outboards are no slouch for a diesel. A lot quicker than our clunker haha. Keep up the good work lookin forward for more!

Hi mate. Inboard diesels are great reliable engines, I work on a few in the local yachts. I'm always had an interest in trying an outboard diesel, I'd love to see one up close one day and hear how loud it is. Yanmar do make good engines though so I'm sure it would be pretty smooth. Stu

I had to replace a belt on my 2005 Mercury but I could not find a new one at all, not even dealerships could order one. I only found ONE on ebay from some guy in Africa. So yeah with that kind of difficulty to find a part, my outboards time is almost up. :(

That's really surprising. 2005 isn't that old at all and I find American brands are normally good at stocking parts.

Dam i wish you had a shop near me (sydney) my 2004 Mercury optimax 150hp is having heating issues, impellar changed but no fixes yet

I would be looking at the thermostats next. Even if the pump is working well, if the thermostats are stuck closed then none of that water will flow through the head.

I've noticed that the tell tale takes 1-2min when the motor has started for water to flow out, and also the tell tale looks weak, anymore suggestions you could throw at me before i take it to a mechanic? thanks in advanced

That depends mostly on the condition of specific outboard and the life it has had in the past. As a general model though I think they were pretty solidly built.

Someone is offering me a Yamaha 85HP two-stroke that has a hole/crack on the block , you can almost see the piston through it . Hi mate, that's a tough call. You will almost never get a block from a wrecker that isn't already a complete engine (with the price tag that goes along with that). It would be interesting to see what a block costs from Yamaha as they do sell them separately. If you are interested in giving yourself a project to sink your teeth into it could be a good one, but it certainly wouldn't be simple one! :)

What confuses me is why are outboard motors so expensive? Did the mfgs collude and price fix? A motorcycle engine has 5 valves per cylinder. EFI and a lotta other goodies and yet still cost much less. 3k for a cylinder bore and pistons also seems INSANE to me. Maybe you should be in the cylinder boring biz me tinks ;)

Hello Dungar Marine , My ? : My brother has a 1999 Johnson 150hp w only low hours ( about 100 or so ) , the compression was over 100 lbs. in all four cylinders , but now all four cylinders are showing only 92lbs on each one & he says it has a little jumpy miss at idle h

They are both very good motors. I find the Hondas to maybe be slightly better build but the Yamahas are easier to work on yourself. It's pretty 50/50.

Not much of a mechanic, but what to see what I can do about fixing my 2002 outboard 25 Mercury or to accept it as a loss. Newbie boat owner, did not realize on a 2 stroke I needed a mix. The motor is seized up now. Any advice or educational material you could recommend would be appreciated. I have the full motor manual and a decent set of tools and would like to learn how to fix this out on my own. If all else fails I can always take it in to a professional. By the sounds of it, is it a complete scrap or do I have a chance at fixing it? Im mostly worried about permanent damage, if I can unseize the thing. Thanks for any the info!

If it is still seized tight then it will need to be disassembled to see if there is damage to the cylinder walls. Often outboards will seize from lack of oil and free up again once they cool down. If the cylinder walls are badly damaged then it is likely to need to be rebored and over sized pistons installed which is pretty much what I did with the recent series of videos on the Evinrude 150.

I just got a free 1990 Skeeter 200DX with a 200HP mercury blackmax, However it is missing the stator, flywheel and nuts that hold it together everything else looks good (carbs are in good condition, pistons look perfect, and no other missing parts) Do you think its still worth the time and money to fix this? I need some guidance. I have recently got a 1973 fabuglas boat with a Chrysler force 85 hp outboard. It has been sitting for a while and I rebuilt the carbs and rewired it but it needs a starter and a floor and the trailer. Would you suggest starting over or fixing it up?

It's hard to say without seeing it but finding an aftermarket starter shouldn't be too hard.

Mr. Dangar question what do you believe 2 stroke or 4 stroke because I went too a marine shop some days ago with a friend and a mechanic told me 4 strokes are a wast of money ?

I personally like four strokes because they burn cleaner, are quieter and you don't need to worry about adding oil to the auto mix reservoir or fuel. It is true that modern two strokes like the e-tecs use less oil though. I have also found the four strokes to have less bearing trouble than the roller bearings in two strokes.
