Without a doubt picking figs is all about the neck softness. If you have a soft neck, you have a ripe fig. Look out for the right color, cracking and above all a fig that's sap free.

You must have read my mind! This is my first year growing figs and I have been wondering when to pick. Your video will save a lot of figs from early picking AND denouncement that the figs are AWFUL, when in fact they are merely under ripe. Thank you!

This was a wonderful video. I am new to growing figs - northern Illinois. My first plant did not make it through its second winter. I brought it into an unheated shed. It was suppose to be a Chicago fig. It died. My second one is a turkey fig. I brought it in the basement last winter and it went dormant and flourished this year in a pot in the yard. It grew 1 fig which is beautiful and LOOKS ripe, but thanks to this video - I didn't pick it. I guess I have to watch a few more of your videos to understand how to get it to grow more fruit? The plant is beautiful. I struggled to know if it is in the right place- a super hot and sunny exposure. It did a lot better when I decided to start watering daily. I don't want to over water - I'm a novice. 😄🙂 Thank you so very much .❤ Melinda

I usually check for a nice shine and no green left on them. In the past I had to pick them a little early to keep them from the birds. Just as I thought the crop was lost to drought We got rain just in time. This year I put a few pinwheels out and I’ve had less trouble with the birds even though there were less leaves to hide the fruit. Thank you for the tips. You’ve got yourself a new subscriber & fan.

Thanks, Ross, this was really helpful. I bought a house on Long Island, NY (zone 7a) last fall. We didn't want to put apple trees in the ground permanently yet, so I looked up apple trees in containers, and there you were. I have six apple trees in containers right now. I liked and subscribed, and although this is my first comment, I watch sporadically, and I appreciate the advice you've given so far. Anyway, it turns out that there's a fig tree (more of a bush, really) on the property. Once I figured out what it was, I wrapped it in straw and bubble wrap to help it survive the winter. Good thing, too: It was really cold last year, and I thought the whole thing died until I started seeing shoots in May. Anyway, I don't know what variety it is or anything about its provenance, but it has about two dozen figs on it. Having come to learn that you have a fig obsession :) I came looking to see if you had advice on picking figs -- and here's this video, exactly on time. I'm not sure that the tree started out early enough to give the fig time to fully ripen this year -- they all look really, really small, hard, and immature compared to what I just saw on your video -- but maybe I'll get lucky, and either way, I'll try to protect the tree/bush even better this year so it has a good shot at starting early and fully ripening next year. Thanks again.

Ross, in your videos I do see you pick a lot of figs that do not seem very droopy, so I had wondered about this. My own fig experience is limited to only BT so I had thought maybe other figs were different.

Why are my figs loaded with fig larvae? Am I picking too soon? I am now afraid to eat the figs, I'll even slice them to check for larvae. I know the life cycle of the fig wasp and their demise inside of the figs. (sad face) What is going on with my figs?

Ross, in the last 3-4 days a few figs on my Black Mission fig tree turned purple. Is there a general timeframe in which the figs ripen? Or, is the drooping neck and softness the best indication of when they are ripe? I picked one and tried it about a day after it turned purple and that was way too soon! It was a light pink inside and only slightly sweet.

@@RossRaddi never mind. I found the answer: “In the case of certain fig varieties, like Kadota and LSU Gold, the fruit's mature color is STILL GREENISH - so how do you rely on sight if the fig's color doesn't noticeably change? Read on! Go by the appearance. The fruit itself will hang in a droopy way on the tree as it ripens.” www.starkbros.com/growing-guide/article/how-to-tell-when-figs-are-ripe

So what if wasps and ants eat my figs before the neck has a chance to turn soft? 😩
@babichevi7950
@babichevi7950 4 жыл бұрын
You have to protect them from ants. There are things you can put on the trunk like Tanglefoot or I think I've heard of Vaseline. As for wasps - I think the little organza bags that are used to protect the fruit from birds, etc., should keep out most wasps.
