Hi I have grown potatoes . No fertilisers used. Its been about 4 months . I can see small potatoes underground but the plants didn't flower at all. And now plants are drying out because it's hot weather here may be? Should I harvest now?

I usually pick some of the smaller new potatoes because it’s one of my favorite dishes lightly salted roasted with onions and a mix of olive oil and butter. Ploping a potato plant in a container by your porch works great for summertime new potatoes and keep the garden for late summer or fall harvest.

Got a late start on the in-ground patch, by a month or so, but already have flowers first of June. Next year, I should be able to get them in outside in March for a double harvest. In the meantime, the spud tubs are filled with carrot sprouts for a reuse.

That really depends on where you live. Potatoes don't do well in containers in our hot dry summers. We just don't get enough rain so it is hard to keep containers moist. They do much better planted directly in the soil.

Your soil is so soft. I know it has to because if you have hard soil it will prevent potatoes from getting big and looking like potatoes. Was the soil already like that or did you have to add that soil? What state are you in? In Southern California where I am the soil is as hard as a rock almost. Nor Cal, I don't know.

I got impatient and dug up the ones in the 5 gallon bucket sigh.. beautiful red potatoes but pretty small I think I got about 8. The other container is still growing husband said wait till fall to harvest them, his grampa was a farmer. I've heard some people say potatoes flower and some people say they don't??? I did get potatoes but no flowers. Anna In Ohio

I have a question. I am wanting to try to grow potatoes in containers, but I am a little unique as here in Hawaii, the coldest we ever get on a bitter-cold winter night is about 60 degrees. The only differnece between our summer and winter is we get more rain in the winter and it is about 10 degrees warmer in the summer. I'm not sure if potatoes will even grow here, or when I should even try to plant them. I know the rest of the country is getting ready to plant theirs now, but I'm wondering if it would be better for me to try to plant them in the winter instead of summer.
@StoneyAcresGardening4 жыл бұрын
So I did a quick bit of research and it looks like December is planting time for you. But I really don't know much about growing is such a warm climate. How many potatoes usually grow from a plant? Can they be grown in a bucket, with drainage? When you have a potato that develops sprouts, do you plant the whole potato or cut it into pieces, being careful not to cut the sprouts & Do you bury the sprouts?
@StoneyAcresGardening3 жыл бұрын
Usually 8 to 10 potatoes from one seed but it really varies based on varieties and growing conditions. Yes you can grow in buckets or grow bags. I have been underwhelmed by the harvests that I have gotten from containers, but we live in a really dry state so it is very hard to keep them watered enough.

i just finished my last hilling with my container potatoes. I have yet to see any flowers on mine...starting to become a lil worried that the frost will hit & kill em off before the tubers develop nice and big. They look so green and healthy right now...probably the most healthiest looking plants I got this year. I do have a Q thou... is there a time when you stop watering them like you do with other root veggies like the onion & garlic? Ive been watering and every 10 days Im applying fish fertilizer. Its my 1st time growing potatoes.
