A good tour guide will create an experience whereas a mediocre tour guide will deliver information. I agree you generally get what you pay for.

Guided tours are the best way to go for iconic and famous museums and cathedrals. They really bring the venue to life with entertaining stories and facts.

Love all your helpful hints and travel hacks. First time I heard about the term Gate Lice was from you and my wife and I experienced yesterday at ORD while boarding the plane 😂

Also it's great to have a guide when visiting areas that may be rougher around the edges. Got a fantastic tour guide in Rio de Janeiro to show us around one of the favela's. It was an enriching, eye opening experience.

Prague is one city where I did ok with my own planning, but the experience would've been better with a local guide. Local guide is the way to go for Prague and is worth the expense.

A great tour guide crafts an experience, while an average one just shares information. I agree-you usually get what you pay for

It doesn't matter, just GO. It really depends on where and what the group is made up of. In south America, its easy to take the day tours to sites. The shops are all around the towns. I like that. You get a tour guide but also some freedom. Europe and North America, you can do yourself very easy. At ancient ruins, I like my alone time. I can do plenty of research before or after my trip at home. When I'm there, I want to feel it and take it all in. Other places like nature, I definitely like to do it solo without a guide. I have also gone to place like palenque ruins and walked one morning by myself to take it all in, and the next day, I hired a guide at the gates to show me the little things that are not so know. I think it depends on the group too. If young people are involved, a guide is often a good idea as an introduction to the subject at hand. Judge the crew on the trip and the experience at hand and make a decision on what will work best for the group.

🇪🇬🐪🌴 I have heard it is good to hire a guide in Egypt, other wise the locals will harass you (mostly try to sell you things).
