2:15 or, even better: just buy it at a normal (not touristy) supermarket. It's chocolate, you can find it at most of the supermarkets and thats the cheapest price you can get. This by the way applies for many food souvenirs around the world, sometimes you can find the exact same package in a souvenir shop 3 times the price of a normal supermarket

I led over 600 tours to Salzburg in the early 1980s when I worked for the U.S. Armed Forces Recreation Center in Berchtesgaden, Germany (also another great day trip from Salzburg). A few things I would add. Even if you don’t think you’d like to see a chamber music concert, absolutely take advantage of seeing one. My favorite location was at the castle. Be very Austrian and have a coffee and pastry at Café Tomaselli in the old city. Even better than a Nackerl, in my opinion, is a Germknödel. It’s a yeast dough dumpling filled with plum jam. And in response to someone who posted there’s not much to see in Salzburg. Respectfully, I think he misses the point. Salzburg is a city to be enjoyed.

One of the great cities in Europe and a must visit if you are a classical music fan. I attended the music festival last summer and spent a week of fantastic performances. Don’t miss the Stiftung Mozarteum, near the Mirabell Palace, if you have a chance to attend a concert there it is an awesome venue. Keep in mind Austrians dress formally for concerts so DO bring a dark suit, although ties are optional. Also, the bus service is excellent and will get you to the Hellbrun Palace, and even all the way to Untersberg which is highly recommended. The surrounding countryside is unbelievably gorgeous so don’t miss an opportunity to visit Hallstatt or one the towns in the Salzkammergut Lake District. The organ concerts at noon are a great way to experience the Salzburg Cathedral, and by all means go to a performance at the Marionettentheater, it’s not just for children and the experience is unforgettable. Generally it’s wise to buy concert and show tickets well in advance, I’ve got mine already for my return visit in January for Mozart Week!

Hello and greetings from a Salzburg local! You've done a good job covering the usual basics. What I missed as soon as I heard you say Steingasse: visit Antique shop Gallery Weinek! The owners Andrew and Viola are amazing people and there are not just antique books (and postcards) there waiting to be explored. They have a selection of natural wines and specialty coffee as well as usually two homemade cakes. And: because it's a gallery there are local artists who display their work there.

Hi Mark, One thing about the Augustine Brewery is their Christmas or Bock beer. It is 6.1% but sliky smooth! One hotell I'd highly recommend is Hotel Hohenstauffen, it's about a 4 minmute walk from the Hauptbanhof & Busbahnhof. The fountens at Schloss Heilbrunn are "Trick" fountains, the Prince Archbishop had them installed to prank his guests. Sadly they usually close around mid September.

About the price. Salzburg is the most expensive city in Austria. But Innsbruck is not much cheaper. Munich is not cheaper either. I recommend staying in Linz on the Danube. I visited Gothenburg, Stockholm, and Uppsala in 2017. I'm from the US, and it was a culture shock for sure. Most everyone is very reserved. Which I liked for the most part. I did see a woman with a stroller struggling to get on the tram. Nobody was helping her, so we stepped in to lift it. Small things like that were kinda shocking. So there's good and bad about the culture of staying in your own bubble. Mind you, not everyone is like that. Overall, it's a fantastic and beautiful country to visit with nice people. I think a mistake people make visiting they tend to think it's a utopia. Well, there are still homeless, some trash, and smelly areas. But it's typically much cleaner and well organized.
