Yesss! We often get so caught up with “sticking it to the man”, if you will, when trying to rebel against diet culture. We do this without realizing diet culture STILL has control over us. Colleen, you are a wealth of knowledge and I’m forever grateful for your insights!!!

I gained weight... and I am sooo happy and grateful to really notice that everybody treats and loves me the same. I got rid of my food thoughts and I noticed that making everything about food is really just the reaction of your body when you don't eat enough. Thank you sooooo much for encouraging and helping me 🙏 I'm so grateful for this channel!!! + once you enjoyed every single food you always restricted and really sit down with it you notice that you prefer other things. Gor example I don't like Ice-cream anymore but I loooove Cucumber. This will probably not be like this forever but that's sooo okay. It's so awesome how your body just knows it's needs 😊

This advice could be followed for all forms of entitlement

Colleen, I really enjoyed this video. I have experienced these moments previously myself. I do use different terms for them, though. What you described I tend to refer to as "rebel eating," as in, diet culture can't tell me what to do and I'm going to eat this in spite of it. What I would usually call entitlement eating is more a feeling of "I've earned this (...whatever it is)" even if I didn't really want it. Both are emotionally charged and not really driven by a real desire for the food itself. Thanks for your wisdom. I always get so much from your posts!

Huge lightbulb moment!! This is it! I kept telling my therapist I’m rebelling against myself and this is exactly what I mean. I’m working to fix my relationship with my “off limit” foods and there’s times where I won’t want it and still eat it and this explains it perfectly! Thank you 🙏 I love your videos and they’re helping me tremendously

This is such a good video! I never heard of it called entitlement eating. I always had the thought, “is this what i really want or having it just cause I can”. But this puts a name to the scenario.

Hi Colleen, I've had food rules and had been dieting for a while and just recently discovered you when I started to notice that I've been obsessing over food, binging and restricting etc. Now I've started to break my rules that I've had and started to eat more intuitively and mindfully thanks to u! In the beginning I really didn't believe in ur methods as I was so into dieting and eating healthy. But now I've started to realize that I don't fuss and obsess over food like I used to and have slowly started to build a relationship with food by eating intuitively. In the beginning I did eat an excess of sweets and other foods that I had restricted myself from but soon all those immediate urges went away. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! ❤

This is so helpful! I’m just starting my IE journey and have noticed myself saying well I’m allowed to have (whatever it is) but really asking myself if I want it or do I just want it because I’m “allowed”. I have also believed that freedom for me is in having a choice and it feels freeing to say yes, I am absolutely allowed to eat this whenever I want but I don’t HAVE to eat it just because it’s in front of me.

Loved this video! I've been dealing with this for weeks, I had been dealing with restriction and when I decided I was going to end restriction I just started eating the foods I wanted but then I started to eat just because I thought I craved them and now I don't know how to identify if what I want is a craving or is it just entitlement. When I finish eating I will just find myself feeling bad about it, do you think I should stop filling the pantry with those foods for now until I get to identify the cravings again? what do you recommend? Thank you so much for content!

I'm currently facing a situation with potential emotional hunger and entitlement eating. My Birthday is tomorrow, and I'm planning on taking my nanny kids out for Rita's. I'm also going to redeem my free Starbucks drink (though, if I could save it, I would rather wait until Saturday or Sunday when things are less hectic). But I'm unsure if I'm going to buy a slice of cake to enjoy tomorrow. Part of me knows I will be perfectly satisfied if I don't have the cake. Any other day of the year, cake probably wouldn't be crossing my mind. But my mind is split between the thought that not having Birthday cake FEELS weird, the idea that eating cake just because it's my Birthday is entitlement eating, and wondering if I will feel restricted if I ignore my emotional hunger when aside from the Birthday thing, I don't know that I even WANT the cake tomorrow
@sofiairias63196 ай бұрын
Hey, I hope you had your cake 🎂. It's perfectly okay to eat cake on your birthday even if you're not hungry especially if it's a tradition and you get to enjoy it with your family. If you're really full maybe you could have a little slice and save it for later. 🤷♀️

I'm so glad your email came into my inbox with this because this is exactly what I've been struggling with. I think I'm going to struggle identifying what it is I truly want but that's fine. At least I'm taking a step further in the journey where previously I felt stuck. ❤️

This video is exactly where im at , i have gained inaight to what my body likes to run on for fuel the past couple yrs and this yr how to use intuitive eating with my brain and making sure to move throughout the day to beable to get back to my set point wait that ive been most my life, ill just be glad when i loose 20 more lbs and can fully transition to fully applying intuitive eating .( example today ive wanted pizza but i know i stay hungry when i eat pizza and i know its high in calories so i skipped gettinga whole pizza at a store and next time i see a slice or two of surpreme pizza then ill buy it and then ill beable to enjoy it without guilt and fuel my body up a half hr later when ill be hungry again ; and really pay attwntion to that hunger scale so i can then work on takling the eating empty calories and be hungery all day in a positive way. Thats where im at.

I wanted to ask what you recommended to do if you have time constraints to eat in particular windows or you won’t get to eat for a very long time but your not particularly hungry at the time but you know you won’t make it comfortably to the next window of time x
@nedutchgirl11 ай бұрын
Entitlement eating may be an important phasr of intuitive eating. Reason i say this is if you arr a long time dieter. Many foods were off bounds which creates deprivation isdues making some food choices more desirable. Then when you go off your diet you are more drawn to those food choices. Then you label those good choices as trigger foods. Truth is if you learned how to incorporate the food choices. Food tends to not be labeled good and bad or trigger foods. Truth is you get tired of some foods or find it does not nourish you aswell as other choices. What i am working on is when the food loses it appeal after first few bites to let it go until another time. Key here is i can have it at another time. For some if they keep their favorite chocolates in the refrigerator. They know they can have it again at another time. For me we have a doughnut store with unique doughnuts. I like them but know it is too rich for me to enjoy a wholr one. I will cut off a quarter piece to emjoy. If not enough i will cut off another bite. After that it losrs its appeal to me. Notice if i cut off a quarter piece gives others permission to follow my lead. We all enjoy doughnuts and without the guilt. We learned how to enjoy every bite this way.

Wow this is so me, I feel like I am never going to get out of diet culture.....
@maryelisabeth7523 жыл бұрын
Hi Colleen, that was a helpful example. I’m wondering if you have any thoughts about sugar cravings and urges to binge. When I let myself eat something super sugary I tend to spiral into a cycle of feeling like I NEED sugar. I think about candy or the idea of a chocolate bar pops into my head at random times even when I’m not hungry. It doesn’t feel good to eat it, but the only way I’ve found to break the craving is to cut out processed sugar for a whole month or more. If I do that then I’m imposing a food rule. As a dietitian have you heard of food addictions? Are they real? Am I actually addicted or is it a misconception?

Do it! I was bulimic and I gained weight but it is going back to normal but something has changed. I don't think about food more than three or four times of the day, at least not when I am not hungry. Love that. Aaaaand I absolutely appreciate my food now and the weight really got less important throughout the time.
