It's the cool flower practice that is leading us down the merry path, I think. I've watched lots of videos about planting now to get a jump start on next year and it is confusing. For instance, nigela is a cool flower and you can plant them now. Does that mean that the seeds start to grow and then die in the cold but then come back in spring with a root system already established? I'm in WNC, zone 7b.

The cool flower method you are leaving in the ground and then they get a jumpstart, but there are lots of books about the cool season method that is not what I am doing on my video so don’t take my advice that I’m giving you and think it’s for the cool season method I’m talking about winter sowing, seeds starting indoors, definitely not cool flower method.

I wrote you several videos back as I’d just found you & was bing watching. I planted 13 packets of 25 seeds ea. The packets said native to my area & fall planting. However I found a few needed cold stratification & no packets told what I needed to do like that. I just scattered on prepped soil & lightly stepped on. Water daily w/ light spray. All packets said 1-2 wks to germinate and it took almost 4 wks to even show up little sprouts. Only one plant has actually now formed little plants (a sage). Still waiting but soooo encouraged I have life. It’s been almost a month! Unseasonably warm here in zone 9 on the gulf of Ms. It is low 90’s in day & still 80’s at night. Hope they make it & I’ll be smarter next time. I’m saving milk jugs now. So excited thanks to you!

No you don’t. If you’re not freezing outside it’s not going to work. You can start your seeds but I’d give it a little longer to get cooler. Your season may be shorter and it may not work well for you in Florida. You would have to really be diligent on watering etc.

Hi Lady! I agree with your milk jug starting date! Last season was my first time winter-sowing. I started in March. I wish I had started in January. I may even start Christmas week! It was hard to resist retail plants, while waiting for my plants to catch up. Thanks as always for your information!

I wonder if people are referring to Lisa Mason Ziegler's "Cool Flowers" method and possibly getting it confused with the winter sowing method. Both are ways to get a headstart on spring flowers, especially for those living in areas with long, hot summers. For example, I am in Middle TN, zone 7b, so if I were doing the cool flowers method, I would need to have started seeds for plants hardy to zone 7 in July so I could be putting plant plugs in the ground now for them to overwinter and bloom early next spring.

@@sarastokes6300 that’s correct. I don’t get the feeling that is the case but more wanting to get a jump start on planting and not understanding the process and timing being everything.

I have a lot of videos giving you step by step instructions for how to go through the winter sowing process. Being as you are new to it, I would highly recommend watching that so you know how to prepare the soil how to prepare the containers all the way through that’s key to you being able to grow the seeds to plant successfully.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge. The video was very informative but I was a little confused on your statement of starting in January and why you pushed the February date up to January. I assumed because the February date was for inside under grow lights and the January was for winter sowing. Is it safe to always start a month earlier than the inside date?

The thing I’m struggling with, is, if I were wanting to mostly just do winter sowing in milk jugs, I’m not sure which starting time on the seed packet to use. there’s a when to sow outdoors and when to sow indoors. For winter sowing would I just sow any and all seeds in January? Zone 7b. And just transplant into the ground once threat of frost is gone?

Ok perfect question and I’ll make a video about this too. Would that help? I am zone 7b/8a. I have been zone 7b before they changed everything now I am 8a so I can speak the best to zone seven my videos would work perfectly for you specifically. I start my seeds at the mid to end is January and finish up at the latest before Valentine’s Day. So honestly just when there’s time in my schedule. I do all of my seeds at one time. That means all my seeds regardless of what the packet says I start them all in my milk jugs at the same time or over the course of a few weekends in mid January to mid February (when i have time to do it). The seed pack won’t tell you about winter sowing. Remember, you are just getting them in the containers. It doesn’t matter when just as long as it’s freezing outside because they are not going to germinate until the temperatures warm up as we start moving into the warmer season. They are literally going to sit in the container as seeds Freezing, and then as the temperature warms, the soil will warm in your container and the seeds will germinate. So it doesn’t really matter when you put them in the container just as long as it is very cold outside the temperatures are cold.

No all of the seeds spring and summer blooming are ALL started at the same time in January for me because it’s freezing here at that time. The packet says nothing about winter sowing. Only for indoor seed starting.

I don't think the winter sowing method would work here in Florida. Sometimes we don't get a freeze, last year we didn't. Sometimes we do get below 32 degrees f.
