Hi Matt, does the same principle apply with a runner on first? For example, there is a deep fly ball to left field. I coach 12u so I'm dealing with lower level players.

At lower ages, I have to think ALWAYS tag up, no? If he drops, you're on 3rd (at least) with 1 or 0 outs, if caught, you're on 3rd with 1 or 2 outs. Why NOT tag? Tell me why at 14u and lower why you wouldn't tag to Right Field here? I would be interested to hear strategy with this scenario.

How does the actual rule work on running to any new base on a fly-ball?????

You mention lower levels vs. Pro but that you were always taught to take the outs into consideration at all levels. As a coach do you prefer to teach 13-17 yo the proper technique or based on if you suspect the outfielder may misplay the ball because of the skill at the lower level?

"if they catch the ball, there's no real advantage for me getting to third base" i mean....you're still closer than you were? if there's a ground ball you would now only have to advance once to score instead of twice? i'm just playing in a recreational league so nobody has taught me this stuff and i really don't understand these rules. i had hoped these videos would help but it still sounds like mumbo jumbo to me.

So 2nd base, no outs. Flyball to outfield, tag up so you can score on 3rd. 2nd base, 1 out. Halfway (in highschool) if he drops ur gone and at home, tag up if he catches it. Since theres no real advantage on 3rd vs 2nd 2 outs. 2nd base, 2 outs. On contact ur gone, dropped ball lets aim for 3rd so you can score on highschool trash.
