Great Vid....after 8 years of thinking about it and looking at pretty much every video made on how too DYI and now with 3 pianos in the family , I finally got all the equipment I needed and tuned my first piano. 4 hours later. No strings broke. Up and Down. It was 30 cents out flat. Got it to 25 out. Will bring it all the way up to 440 if possible... But first time sounds great or I should say better. I owe it all to clips like this...VERY VERY HELPFUL. NOTE: There is a learning curve.... and I did run up on some things no one covered. But by the time I got to hour 4 I was more than pleased when I got a note or fifths or fourths that sounded good to my ear.... what a pleasure that was

I am one of the Piano Tuners for Lincoln Center in Manhattan New York. I approve this video. What this man said about tuning is pretty spot on. The only thing is that I would've perfectly tuned the piano first before I made the video LOL. Other than that he is very knowledgeable and absolutely right. I learned how to tune in 2012 I've tuned about 130 different pianos. My pianos can last up to about 7 or 8 months. I'm getting a lot better. I also tune across country. I'll be tuning in Utah and California this Sept.

I usually have my tuner come when the piano starts falling flat. I'm not a seriously heavy player, but I can go a year and a half with my 1915 Vose & Sons upright. Maybe I'm wrong about this, but back in 1915 nobody had Central air and Vose made their pianos to hold their temperament better in less then ideal conditions. From February to October, I will get a few notes drifting, but the whole piano will still be at A440 give or take a cent or two.

+Valdor Fox I have a 1919 Lexington Boston upright piano and i tune it and maintenance it myself. i have replaced and repaired several parts on my own and know the names of all parts. i usually tune it myself whenever i play it and especially if I find a flaw considering I tuned it myself when I got it because it was real bad when i first got it. +Valdor Fox As a rule, if the musician actually notices that the piano needs tuning - it's gone too far. The idea of regular tuning is, amongst other things, that the player never realises that the instrument is significantly out-of-tune. The advice given in this video is all good.

The more you tune your piano, the more stable it becomes over time (provided the piano is in good shape and the environment is stable). So, your piano will be in tune longer and sound better!

When my grandma moved out of her house we got her piano witch at the time was way better the our keyboard. I still play on that piano today and it is way out of tune. Within the first year of getting it we had it tuned. Now about 10 ish years later after playing on that piano I got used to it. Then I used multiple tuners and discovered that is was out of tune. I told my mom and she called a tuner, the same one that came 10 years ago, experienced old man. Anyway he said that our piano has gotten so out of tune that he could not fix all the sections. The only good section is the middle and I found out that does not clash well with the other out of tune sections. Anyway he said and I agree with him that we needed a new piano however because it it my dads mom's piano he doesn't want to get rid of it or at least that's what I think. He firmly believes that our piano can be fixed, however after watching this and knowing more then him about pianos I think our old piano is not that great and can't be fixed at least not very well. What do you think and also what should I do if I want a new piano? Thanks for your help.

I dont know where. you live, but any major city should have dozens of "free" pianos--as long as you come get them. Rule of thumb is-just get a Yamaha. :) They work great, no trouble, not horribly expensive for average people. Unless someone's selling a 6 foot tall Bosendorfer for 3,000. Then sell your first born and get right on that. Those come along once every 10 or even 20 years. Assuming it's in good shape...

So many keep saying you shouldn't attempt to tune a piano yourself. I don't agree. I bought an old upright piano that cost 80$ to learn to play. It was so out of tune, that it was completely unplayable. Bought tools from thomann.de and tuned it myself with a help of chromatic tuner and internet research. Where the experience comes from when no-one tries it. Even professionals start from scratch. They are not born with those skills.

Yup, I recently bought a new Yamaha U1 upright and I had to learn a few things the hard way. 1) (upright-)Pianos for 12k USD might be as good much more expensive ones when it comes to materials and quality of craftsmanship. However, those mid-range pianos (price) almost always need to be toned right away (that's about 1k-1.5k usd if it's done right), and they need much more "love" from a professional piano technician during the first few years. 2) Making pianos cheaper seems to be all about man-hours. Toning is sloppy and irregular on mid-range instruments, regulation is far from optimal, and the action needs MUCH more time to get to its final state / touch / feel. 3) Piano brands don't really have a "sound" to them, every piano can be re-toned to sound completely different ("Yamaha pianos are bright" = myth) So what i'm saying is this: I bought a Yamaha U1 six weeks ago and now I have to invest more than 2000usd (or even more) to bring this upright to its full potentail (which is very very good). If I had bought a Grotrian-Steinweg or whatever, I would have gotten a piano that is toned very well right from the start, and I would have gotten better tuning stability too.

When you tune A4 = 440 hertz, and not every single note to be tuned in the exactly electronic tuner... it's really dependant on how skillful the piano tuning technician is to kinda 'balancing' up the overall piano pitches after he gets the A4 at 440 hertz... that's why here comes exams for qualified piano technicians... even in just tuning thing!

Larry, we have a guy here in the UK who poses as a piano tuner and puts instruments OUT of tune and nudges balance pins forward causing sharps to rub against natural keys so that the notes "stick." He offers instruments with only a 6 per cent. markup. I dont think he is very succesfful. Ron. Piano techie since 1947 !!!!

Wow, that's a very hot (echoey) room... I want to gripe and say i HATE digital tuners! I think they're off. I find that the apps aren't accurate. I know very well that the decibel meter is off. It doesn't jibe with a digital meter/tuners (s) I KNOW are right. Yeah, of course. an old piano is more stable. "Because wood never forgets it used to be a tree." I heard this from a high-end sound engineer. You have other problems with old ones, I'd imagine. Very old wood can just split in two if it gets too dry. They water content is gone, so its very. light by the time it's 2-250 years old. Also very fragile.

if you leave the average piano untuned for over a year the pitch of the piano changes requiring extra tuning. also the longer you leave a piano untuned the stiffer the strings become leading to strings snapping at your next tuning ie. strings need to be regularly tuned (stretched) so that they remain 'elastic'.

I tune my piano whenever I hear that annoying 'wow, wow, wow' of out of tune unisons. The Vertinuner® takes care of everything regarding intonation. I tune the WHOLE piano 4x a year as seasonal changes affect the WHOLE instrument. It can be in tune with itself, BUT quite a few cents flat/or sharp depending on the season. This can be annoying when playing along to recordings so..... You CAN tune your own piano BUT you need a lot of practice, preferably on a crappy piece of junk ready for the breakers. You dont know what you are saying about. The essential of tuneing a piano is not to achieve perfetc,440 Hz frequency. The higher keys must be set up a little bit higher,and lover notes must by a very little,but lover than 440. Therefore, You probably should rethink your system and try tuneing for 432 Hz . This is the sound of older pianos,before the war. Afther WW ll they have changed the frequency and higher it up to 440,but for me,its too high and sound from a piano,that is tune up to 440,gives me a headache.

Can you tune your piano yourself? Simple answer is YES. With this days technologies - definitely. Do some research, download the software, order the lever, read some forums. It is a waste of money to pay for your home piano tuning. Let the piano technicians do the "technician" job instead.

nope ;) it isnt so easy already,because if you for the instance, tune up your piano with a help of a tuner , setting on 440 Hz. you will get very strict and mechanical sound,which is technically correct,but without "soul" and corelations with other notes. A good tuner knows that you must give a little extra when you go on high,and a little bit less when you go on lower notes, but THIS is where the art is beggining. Dont be a smartass, you will never achieve a durability and feeling by tuneing piano yourself . In my country for such an awkward and cheap way of behaviour,we'd say "Janusz" which is common,Polish name,that is representing a wise guy with a moustache,leather jacket ,who saves on things he shouldn't ,beacuse its funny and puts him in bad light. Old fashioned cranks (hammers) were "T" shaped. They also have metal ends to the handle for using to gently punch in any slipping pins. Such cranks are still very useful, especially in the extreme treble and sometimes the bass where the case rim can restrict access. An array of cranks is wise as the "ergonomics" can differ from piano to piano. I have often thought I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous !
