When to use a Dent Ball or Barrel to remove Dents in Saxophones.

This week we'll be taking a look at specific areas of dent work and when to use a dent ball or barrel in saxophone repair.

Great introduction to saxophone repair. Does brass experience any work hardening as does many metals, where it actually becomes very brittle from all this manipulation or from removing dents, creases, and wavy patterning? I work with both mild steels and high-tensile varieties, and much use caution to prevent thinning of brittleness. Thanks again my friends.

Yes! Brass does experience work hardening and becomes brittle. Luckily we can anneal it to continue to work with it without risk of cracking.

i'm an electrical engineer, but i fix musical instruments for kicks. and so i often buy retired school instruments on ebay, which are quite smashed up. the crook you showed in the beginning of this video should have the majority of its dents removed by filling it with water and propping it up in a freezer. you might need to do that several times, to get it ready to finish the job by mechanically pushing the dents out. if you try to finish the job with frozen water, you risk tearing the brass.

Interesting technique! We also use the MDRS to remove dents in U-shaped tubing (also called J crooks, or bows) without having to do a lot of disassembly or extra work.

Do you ever use heat during dent removal ? #dent removal

Occasionally. We'll use heat to anneal the brass in the bow section on an extremely dented instrument after we've taken off the bow guard.. Of course annealing makes it softer and then the subsequent dent work will work harden the brass.
