Speaking of contractions, note the one at 2:38. That is the proper way to write a contraction with the word “have”. “Shoulda”, “woulda”, and “coulda”, etc. are slang. You should never use them in school or a job application, but they’re fine in dialog because that’s the way that people talk. On the other hand, “should of”, “would of”, “could of”, etc., are nonsense phrases written by people who are trying to write “should’ve”, “would’ve”, could’ve”, etc. Ironically, it’s a mistake more often made by native English speakers than those learned it as a second language, because they learn to speak the language long before they learn to write it, and so they attempt to write phrases the way they sound without looking at them very carefully. It’s the same with those who wrote “then” when they mean to write “than”.

Ehhhh, I'm not fond of the single-word apostrophe situation... I mean, "G's" doesn't look right to me. I'm fine with "Gs". As long as u make sure that the 's' is lowercase, I feel the point gets across. I feel the same about the---because my brain won't conjure the right term---"number possession" usage of 's'???... I cringe when I see ppl type "the 90's" or "Hey, the 1700's were a crazy time, right?!" I'm always like, "Why are u putting an apostrophe there?! It's '90s' and '1700s'! Amiwrong or amiright?!? Using an apostrophe on the plural form of a single letter is fine, but NEVER fall into the trap of using one with acronyms or other sets of letters. For example: “I wash RVs”, not “I wash RV’s.” “I learned my ABCs”, not “I learned my ABC’s.” All you have to do is leave the s uncapitalized or use a smaller one.

I have also seen the apostrophe used within dialogue to designate that a character is quoting someone. As in "Yeah, yeah," Bill groaned, "I know. 'Don't push the blue button.' Like I'm not reminded every day!" I hope that usage catches on. It looks much more neat than using quotes again, and it reduces confusion in the reader since the quotes dont seem to close.

What about quotes within quotes? In those situations, aren't apostrophes used on either side of the inside quote to avoid confusion with the entire quote?
@LughSummerson9 жыл бұрын
intoxicary They are called single quotation marks ( ‘ ’ ). In traditional typography, the closing single quotation mark looks the same as an apostrophe, but the opening one is rotated 180 degrees. In computing the same mark ( ' )is often used for apostrophes and single quotation marks.

Because I didn't do laundry today, you're saying don't do it tomorrow on a Tuesday I understand now why Thanos snapped his fingers, too many monitors So before, the complaints were about how I was doing laundry, and wearing the same clothes, of course that somehow got translated into "he's ware ing the same genes" where did "ware" come from Here's what I think is happening, I started understanding lies, and so now somebody is trying to get me think or perceive something, just so they could say back what I said to them For example, if I said, "if you knew something was going to happen, why didn't you do anything to change it" So NOW somebody is trying to get me to think that my actions actually have "meaning" just so they would be able to have me on camera, and my "brain cache/logs" and then say that I "knew" and still did it.

@Cal948 жыл бұрын
okay. Apostrophes can be used to symbolise plurality of single letters, like "Dot your I's and cross your T's. but what about numbers? would "binary is merely a bunch of 1's and 0's" be correct? because I use apostrophes in such a fashion, but am never quite sure if it's proper, nor has anyone other than microsoft office ever bugged me over them...
@Lisa_Stacey10 ай бұрын
This is actually incorrect. When those letters are upper case, the apostrophe is not used, e.g., Ps and Qs. It IS used when they are lower case, so that it's not confusing for the reader, e.g., p's and q's. Because it is easy to read with numbers, no apostrophe is used. So, 100s and 1000s is correct. I hope that helps.
