Hi Andrew and all you other viewers. My 'daytime job' takes me travelling to strange places all the time and when I get the chance I go to local markets, where I sit with the goldsmiths and see hiw they do without our fancy gadgets. In Martapura (Kalimantan) and Bandung (where they make fine filligree) I learnt to file the solder (they mixed their own to small lumps) and then mix the filings with flux (borax+water). This was then added to fine jewelry pieces/filigree with a brush. So there you have home made solder paste. Great for tiny tiny joints but not for Mass-heavy stuff. They also showed me to use tooth paste for stopping heat (no gel there) and nail polish to prevent solder to run where you don't want it.

Wish they have a way to puplish their georgious methods on KZbin! We would see a really unorthodox knowledge how these common "problems" of jewelry been solved in earlier civilizations!😅😅😅

Andrew, thank you for this. I was seduced by the advertised ease-of-use of syringe paste solder. I found the paste impossible to get out of the needle so i had to take off the top and use a pick. So much for precision placement! I thought i might have gotten a bad one so i ordered another kind from another supplier. Same problem. Whatever flux is in that paste smokes so much that i put on my mask while using it. Just did not work out for me. I will use it for jump rings as you suggest. After all, it wasn't cheap

thought about using paste solder for quickness easy to use less clean up wont be doing that now thanks for the good advice again

Thank you for this video. It answered my question. I have another question. If you are using syringe solder on a tiny area how do I keep it off of my texture surface if I am working on an overlay. Should I sweat solder first? A response would be appreciated.

I love your videos. I'm confused about this topic. I'm a beginner. I want to solder 1.0 x 4mm ss jump rings to ss rings. ( like bezels) Which one to use. Paste, Panel, Soldering iron, Torch?

has to be a torch with an actual flame and use paste solder in your case

Hi Andrew, thanks for the advice for soldering larger pieces, very helpful. Is it necessary to wear a mask for soldering, would you recommend a particular style?

Andrew, do we know the WHY of the syringe solder: why is it not the end-all, best or excellent solution for soldering? I am so interested in understanding the chemistry, the physics of the product...WHY? If you know, I'd be delighted (as would many others I'm sure) to understand and know. Also, it would be amazing to hear why one solder is best for what operation compared to another...why do we choose what we choose? What are the CRITERIA? Thank you so much for your beautiful brain, and everything else!- I'm sure your wonderful family would agree!

Hi Andrew do you ever find the paste solder dries out-I did read somewhere to use a tiny amount of vaseline to rehydrate the paste. I make jewellery as a hobby to learn to teach high school kids here in Oz -so it can dry out on me. I find paste easier with the kids but they are heavy handed with it and waste a bit-it is useful to hold the fine pieces together.

Andrew, I am so happy to have found your KZbin channel and from there atthebench.com. I am new to all is but I do have an accomplishment mentor. Looking forward to the next video I pick.

You have so many great videos unfortunately this was not one of them because you didn't actually do any soldering. Not even with the paste solder in the tube which this video is about. At the bench is a practical video demonstration. You should stick to this style. It's what your loyalist have learn to love about "At the Bench"
