I like the video overall except for one thing. You said for 3 syllable words we stress the middle syllable. No we don't. We follow accenting rules which are pretty simple. If a word ends in a vowel, or the consonants s or n, we stress the second to last syllable. If the word ends in any consonant other than s or n then we stress the final syllable. Three syllable examples of final syllable stress: conductor, obrador, cicatriz, libertad, ciudad, caravel. I am still going to use this video for a Spanish class for my substitute to present while I am at home sick. I will just have to correct students on the stress rules when I come back.

Yes, you can use the verb "saber" instead of "hablar", although "saber inglés" could be interpreted as not being totally fluent, whilst "hablar inglés" would imply that you arer totally fluent or you have at least a high level of English.

First off, I have been binge watching these lessons, thank you Dr. Evans for this content. Watching your videos has helped me greatly in learning Spanish. I did have a quick question though - I noticed in the example for Saber, the last sentence, El sabe tocar la guitarra, there is no accent mark above the E in El to know that it's "he." I was curious to know why this is the case. Is this one of your "rule breakers" that you talk about? I know context matters in Spanish and "the" wouldn't really make sense of course, but I'm still curious to know if there's a specific reason the accent mark is left off. Thanks again for your help, you've been a tremendous resource!
@ronibrowning73163 жыл бұрын
You don't have to write the accent mark if the letter is capitalized. This is accepted by the RAE.

Thank you again for these videos! A couple of questions though: 1) Can we say "Luz conoce la literatura española bien" the same way we did with "Ella conoce Paris muy bien"? 2) Why didn't we put "a" before Paris when we said "Ella conoce Paris muy bien" like in "Yo conozco a Juan"?
@grijalda753 жыл бұрын
1) Yes 2) The answer for this is complicated. In Spanish there is an exception with preposition "a" and direct and indirect objects. The general rule is: "a" when it is indirect object and no preposition when it is a direct object. The exception is that we add an "a" also when the direct object is a person, so it is "Conoce París", "Conozco la cocina tradicional china", etc. But "¿Conocen a Carmen?" "Conocemos a tu hermano", etc. This "anomaly" causes some confusion among some native speakers (myself included) when choosing the right pronouns (DO: lo, la; IO: le). I hope this helps
