I have a When Truckers Go Right story. We the engine blow in an AMC Eagle while driving I-80 close to Davenport, Iowa one time. The vehicle blew a rod through the side of the engine block and was not salvageable, so it ended up being towed away. We didn't know what to do so we rented a motel room for a night so we could try to address the situation. Turns out that we didn't meet all of the requirements to rent a car for some reason or another, so we ended up renting a moving truck instead. We rented the smallest one that they had available at that particular place but it was still pretty big. So we're traveling along at night in a mostly empty moving truck and drove right into a serious windstorm, with heavy crosswinds. There were a lot of trucks out on the road that night. We pulled off at a truck stop to grab some drinks/snacks, stretch a bit, and to give fighting the wind a short break. After a short few minutes, we decided to get back on it and stop prolonging the inevitable. We were en route to Ohio. Got back on I-80, still fighting the wind. When we pulled out, there were a few trucks were leaving at the same time. I guess some of the drivers must have seen us trying to fight the wind before we pulled off because once we got out there, we had a few trucks box us in. It kind of freaked us out for a moment because we had heard stories about that kind of thing happening when you pissed off a trucker, until we realized that the drivers were trying to help by shielding us from the crosswinds. When we got to an area where the wind died down and stayed that way for a few miles, they all pulled away, giving a short blast on the horn and a wave of acknowledgement. It was an incredibly kind, concerted effort like nothing we had never seen before. I wish we knew who the drivers were so we could thank them. It was more than a little scary trying to fight the wind before they did what they did to help us out. So if by chance any of the drivers that were out there that night happen to read this (slim chance, I know) THANK YOU. We have never forgotten your kindness and we never will!

A lot of people don’t realise trucks can’t just pull up on a ten cent piece whenever they want and don’t understand if they are too close they are invisible coz of the blind spot. Yes!! Driving truck is super dangerous for all kinds of reasons. It's a necessary and hard job, and criminally underappreciated. Maybe with all these empty shelves this Christmas, we'll gain a little more respect for the trade. Ihad an uncle who drove truck all over the US for years. One time, he'd gotten turned around in rural Pennsylvania looking for a shortcut (famous last words) and almost got shot because he accidently pissed off the wrong backwoodsman. Truckers have some stories.

@shotforshot59832 жыл бұрын
Are you assuming that the trucker even hit his brakes immediately? Did it take trucker some seconds to come to a level of awareness after the impact? 65 to 80mph, 12,000lbs of momentum vs 20mph, 3500lbs. Also, an under appreciated aspect of collisions is the violence and disorientation of the unexpecting driver. Head and neck whipped, then often hitting head rest, door frame, a-pillar or airbags (still violent btw). Driver's entire body may get thrown sideways or forward, especially the legs. If you watch crash footage it is very common for the impacted driver to inadvertently stab the accelerator pedal immediately after or even just take precious time to find the brake pedal.
@TheNuckinFoob2 жыл бұрын
@@shotforshot5983 A competent driver would've seen it coming. They would've been aware of EVERYTHING going on around them at all times; they'd check every mirror regularly. A truck coming up from behind like this shouldn't have surprised them. I've been in hit many times at all levels: from minor fender benders to collisions resulting in an ambulance ride. With the exception of when I was a teenager that was still essentially learning I was very aware of each one prior to the actual collision because I'm constantly scanning all directions. Way too many people today can't be bothered to pay attention while driving. Sad, I know, but it's true. You'd think more people would be aware of their surroundings whilst operating a 3,000+ pound missile capable of incurring huge amounts of damage but no, most people are too busy on their phones, playing with their radio or doing everything BUT paying attention to the road. I've seen idiots going down the highway applying makeup or even shaving. It's ridiculous. At best they just create traffic congestion, like when they jump out into the passing lane because the vehicle on front of them is going 5mph slower than them. 9 times out of 10 they cut off someone in that passing lane causing them to slam on their brakes, showing down a line of 10+ cars that WERE making good time and creating a lovely bottleneck of congestion. Then, when they complete their pass, they're so involved in whatever else they're doing they blissfully stay on the passing lane instead of moving back over. Hell, when I lived in California (where you have the absolute worst of the ignorant folks) I saw several instances of a car on a one lane road blocking an emergency vehicle for progressing because they're completely unaware of it beyond them. Lights flashing, siren blaring, and these dummies just cruise along because they never check their mirrors and have their music loud enough they don't hear a damn fire engine or ambulance behind them. I've seen police cars sit behind a driver for miles, lights and sirens galore, before they actually pull over because it takes them that long to notice they're being pulled over. That's the best case scenario to their ineptitude. At worst they cause accidents of various severity. They'll send another vehicle into the median when they move out to pass because checking their mirror prior to moving over is just too hard, I guess. They'll slam into stopped traffic because even looking at the road *directly in front of them* with any regularity is too complicated a concept for them. They'll slam on their brakes on a highway, slowing down everyone in every lane, to get over to an exit lane they should've moved over for over a mile back because they were too engrossed in something else to know the exit was approaching. In extreme cases they'll actually come to a dead stop AFTER passing their exit and try to reverse back to it instead of just going to the next one and adjusting their course. You might be able to chalk a tiny portion of incidents like this to shock but if you're actually paying attention to driving your vehicle, if you stay alert and scam your mirrors and know what's going on around you, you'll almost never get surprised by anything. The problem is so very few people can be bothered to do that.

My answer to your purposed question, desert home seclusion, because being a Arizonan born in the State capital Phoenix where I have seen temps as high as 118 in the shade during the summer months, and myself really don't deal real well with cold temps especially cold enough to create ice on roadways, even though was a trucker for 20+yrs and have had to deal with those conditions in my many years of driving without paint transfer accident in those years but did have avoid a situation that a construction crew caused by not properly notifying all traffic that there was a flag man stopping traffic to only allow one lane of traffic to pass across the narrow bridge they were working on my lane was the one stopped and I was forced to take avassive action to not hurt or damage anyone or thing but to my loaded trailer as I passed several stopped vehicles on the right for approximately 5-8 car lengths before slowing enough to take my truck further right and entering the ditch but diidnt and couldn't save my trailer from snapping its frame just behind its locking pin to the truck and remained upright both truck and trailer and the big heavy rools of paper were not even damaged through out all of that ordeal. The cars that I all stayed at this sight and thanked me for my driving and all gave positive statements to Alabama state trooper that my quick responce to the sudden stopping of the traffic by the construction crew saved their lives and shouldn't me cited for anything and wasn't given any citations by Alabamas state trooper but the responding trooper did add a positive addition to the investigation that was expecting be seeing a very bad seen because the prior week it was in the very same spot but the driver didn't make it along with two others that he had totally ran over and my accident was that my trailer didn't make it and in his view and assesment of the seen that I was not at fault and that there needs to be more drivers like me with skills to do all that is totally possible to not panic and look for a way to not take innocent lives and stated he will use this accident in his safety talks with the public that not all truck drivers are dangerous this driver is a very safety caution driver and no loss of life had happen here due to an alert driver... Seclusion does us all good lets your mind reboot so when going back to chaos you are calmer and not so quick to anger against the not so intelligent people that seem to be everywhere around us and slowly drain our smarts from us until we damage our own things trying to get them back from the dumb@sses by trying to run them down or over in a 80,000$ vehicle that you love but seem to not anymore just focused on doing away with one more dumb@ss with your beautifull dream car

like no7, you cannot see a small car if it is very close to the front of you, so remember that if you cut one off or do a break test they dont spot as fast as cars, like no7 my mate did the same thing to a small car, it shook him up so bad he gave trucking away.

I drove longhaul for nearly 20yrs. Running nearly 3 trips a month from SC to CA and back. But i grew up around trucking in the 70's because my dad was a independent owner operator. When the CDL law was passed and allowed almost anyone to get licenced. I thought i wanted to be a trainer and help guys out. But quickly changed my mind. Those schools don't teach them anything but how to pass the test. The law was supposed to make it better but it made it worse.

Seriously, how can you do this without mention the semi in Humboldt, Canada that ran a red light and T-boned a coach carrying a high school hockey team, killing 16 of them and seriously injuring another 15? It's by far the highest bodycount of any of your entries and made worldwide news when it happened a couple years ago.
