i’m at 4 months right now and was loosing hope but looking at videos like these is a reminder that we all recover at different speeds just can’t give up , I still don’t have my full rage of motion or strength but it’s getting better

I so appreciate these videos you've made. I'm a 70 year old female yoga instructor who's had a reverse shoulder replacement. In spite of our differences, I find so much encouraging information in your videos, and also relate to the pace of recovery. I'm currently four months post-op, and yes, getting to work on strength now feels great! Most days...

You give me hope. I know I need shoulder repair surgery, but I didn't know how bad I needed it until this year when it started giving me pain. I injured myself on the job and thought everything was ok. 10 years later, I can hardly lift anything on the damaged shoulder. Your video has convinced me to see the doc and get something done. I just hope it's not too late for me.

Awesome! I'm super glad to hear that. I struggled with what to do with my shoulder for a long time as well. I tried many things as you probably watched in my first few videos on this channel. I opted for surgery, despite it being a long recovery. I followed my healthcare team's directions to the letter and now my shoulder feels SO much better. It's even better than my "good" shoulder now in most ways. You can do that too. Best of wishes on your journey.

thanks for your videos, they give me hope and ideas. I had shoulder surgery 11 weeks ago for a total supraspinatus tear, a partial infraspinatus tear, a partial labrum tear and complete loss of cartilage with with distal clavicle debridement of my dominant shoulder. I have been a bit discouraged with the amount of pain I still have, but continue in PT twice a week, plus my home exercises. I am so looking forward to more range of motion, reduced pain and ability to drive again. So, thanks for your videos, they are very helpful.

I am 6 months post RCR Dec 2022 and Biceps reattachment Feb 2023 surgeries and have been in PT daily for 2 months...and NOW I can lift 2 pounds with hand/arm.

You are most welcome. Yes, it takes a LONG time for the process of tendon healing. For the first 12 weeks, I focused primarily on gaining and maintaining mobility in my shoulder. Congrats man! You’re doing great. I’m a little further than you. Unfortunately I have scapula dyskinesis which slows me down but I know that now base on your recovery, at that phase that you are the strength starts to come back really fast!

I’ve been waiting and dealing with other huge life & health issues..So I’m going to be starting from a very physically weakened place. I’m 74. Maybe I don’t want to give up another year healing 🤷‍♀️

I'm sorry to hear you've been dealing with so much. I tried doing physical therapy prior to surgery. It works for some. At the very least, it will help you become stronger and make recovery easier, if you end up opting for surgery.

@@dianegibbs3716 Only you know what is best for you, but from your description, PT may be a better option over doing nothing. Many obtain good results from PT. If you do try it, make sure you find a good PT with the same mindset and goals you have. Best wishes to you!

Oh WOW it's strange how my doctors have me doing a lot many weeks ahead of your time frame. I go to the doctors today for my two month visit so I'm hoping I'm aloud to do more like workout, run, swim, go to the amusement park, cut the grass and more. But we shall see.

Yeah, my healthcare team went on the conservative side because they knew I wanted return to sport, specifically CrossFit, weightlifting, skiing, and basketball. They told me taking a few extra weeks would give me a better chance of achieving the recovery I was looking for. They were right. On the other hand, my recovery is faster than many. So many variables! Glad you’re doing well.

@@livelongerlivestronger thank you for responding as usual. So my two month appointment went very well yesterday. My doctor said I am recovering faster than normal and I am allowed to pick up more than 5 pounds now, I can swim and workout but only very light. I'm not allowed to do push-ups or pull-ups but I'm happy that I can start working out light and do a bunch of other stuff.

I was able to lift very light loads safely and drive comfortably at four months. For me it took a lot longer to lift heavier loads. I was more careful than most.

Over head press with ER - 14 weeks PO , thats still so challenging for me. It's so hard to keep it at 90 degree while raising up ? Any advice ?

@Sanghamitra Das that was and still is the hardest movement for me as well because it totally exposes the Supraspinatus. The Supraspinatus has little to no help from other muscles in that position, which is why we both feel so weak doing that movement. This is totally normal! It is something we will just need to continue working on consistently in order to strengthen...it just takes time and patience. At first, I couldn't even raise my arm above my head with external rotation. Working on overhead press with ER, I was eventually able to raise it, but not keep my elbow stacked under my wrist. Next, I was able to keep my elbow stacked under my wrist, but only for a few reps. Then my reps started increasing. Once I got to 3 sets of 15 reps, Dr. Dan added the band to make it harder. So, work with what you can do now. Keep doing that as often as your healthcare team advises and one day several weeks from now, you will be stronger! I've been working on it for about 6 weeks now and it's still hard, but the good news is after consistently working on it for all those weeks, its a lot stronger than it was.

I’m 4 months post surgery but can’t get arm fully extended up and placing arm behind back is somewhat a struggle. Shoulder hurts a bit when lifting weights. Is this normal?

Hi Brad! Don't worry. Having difficulties with internal rotation behind your back is normal. I had the same issues. Check out my Week 13 video starting at the 3:00 min mark with very specific things I did starting at the 3:40 mark. Here is a starting link for you: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2KYpKuglrCsack. I did those things consistently and it really helped. I wasn't allowed to really lift weights until about 6 months in, but then it was light. That is unless you count lifting 1-2 pound weights or bands! I took it very slow with progress each week, allowing my body to catch up. I didn't want to rush it and trip up on the metaphoric 5-yard line so-to-speak. By taking my time with progress towards lifting weights again, I allowed my body to adapt and didn't experience much pain. Also make sure to differentiate between pain and discomfort. @Ruben Guerra that's a lot of dislocations! It sounds like surgery was the first step to stopping the dislocations. I can say recovery is long, but so far the benefits have outweighed any downside. I'm sure it will be that way for you as well. Stay positive and work hard, you will get there!

@@rubenguerra9473 I could drive with one hand right away, but I didn't. It took me until about Week 15 to start feeling comfortable enough to drive with two hands. Before that, I always felt that if I needed to use my involved shoulder/arm in an reactive way, it may compromise my repair. Fortunately, I have been in a position, I haven't had to drive.

Hi! I'm at week 15 post shoulder surgery. Did you still stick to 3 days strengthening with 1 rest day inbetween at this point? My physio is also a professional wrestler and I'm afraid he suggests exercises which are a little too tough (push ups, side plank stretched out arms, pike push ups), I think I'll follow your regimen or combine the two Btw. My surgery was labral tear repair, debridement etc., rotar cuff wasn't torn

Apologies for not answering sooner. I mostly did 3 days a week strengthening, always with at least a day of rest between sessions. Some weeks I needed more than a day of rest, but typically it was 3 sessions a week. What you describe does sound aggressive. Hopefully your recovery went well.

@@livelongerlivestronger Thanks for getting back to me. I had some more pain and doctor had me have another MRI which luckily showed no tears or damage. I only had to have a hyaluronic injection and from now on everything should be smooth (for at least 6 months). The 3 days a week strengthening regime seems optimal. I'll stick to it. @@SinbadtheSailor20 I would also look at doing Crossover Symmetry shoulder protocol, it is amazing for shoulder health. I also dead-hang at least 2 minutes a day, which really helps maintain my overhead mobility, a big key for me sitting behind a desk a lot.

You likely won't be able to go for 2:00 at a time...that's a LONG time to hang unless you have wrist wraps/straps/or hooks to help you hang. None of that has been necessary for me. I hang about 30-60 seconds several times a day...or try to. It helps me a ton.
