This is a great little interview. I have seen retro gaming KZbin videos where Tim Cain, the lead creator of "Fallout," has stopped by the comments and explained not only why "A Canticle for Leibowitz" had such a huge influence on the game's design, but also why the book meant so much to him. Many thanks to Mike for sharing this with us.

@@SunEaterBooks For sure! As you and Cahill discussed, negative content is everywhere and hating on things is too-easy fun for many people. Most of this booktube community is willing to leave that at the door, and will pivot if you want to pivot (especially to Wolfe or GGK) 🙂 I like Mike's tactfulness with The Vanished Birds (a book I incidentally loved) - if you don't have something nice to say, maybe don't say it. Yeah, Book of the New Sun is one of the best series out there. I don't know if I can appreciate it in the way an author would, but I loved it. I've only read it once but I back up that you can enjoy it on a first read. I did also read up on it afterwards, and watched Moid's videos. And I read Canticle for Leibowitz, it was like 10 years ago but I still think of it, each section works really well. The illuminated circuit diagram was one of the standouts, as well as that ending.

OH MY GOD I cannot wait for you to read Gene Wolfe. I'm in the Two-Read club for Book of the New Sun, I'm going to have a third, but probably won't need a fourth, being 48 years old, and wanting to read new things instead of old things. You are going to find yourself partaking of the finest literary fiction: dense, meaningful, complicated, layered, and delicious. It is not meant to be taken lightly. After Wolfe, you will read Vance, because that is just what one does. I consider myself fortunate that early in my life (teens and 20s) I encountered Tolkein and his Rings, Dan Simmons and his Shrike, Leibovitz, Asimov's Robots, Donaldson's Leper, Saberhagen's Swords, Herbert's Spice ... Without those I think the conversation started by Wolfe and Vance would seem only like distant echoes in a vast cavern to an explorer who cannot conceive of the depth and distance of the walls around him. I hope you enjoy, and I am sure that I will enjoy your reactions. :)

Great video, always good to hear about an author's likes and influences. I didn't realise that A Canticle For Leibowitz was three novellas when I started reading it many years ago...I DNF'd it after the first novella as I found it jarring that the story I'd been reading didn't continue - I was pissed that the first story with the characters I enjoyed was finished, now years later I think I should give it another try.

BOTNS is much easier to read than Malazan or Bakker, imo. On the surface level it's a fantasy adventure set in the far future. I don't think it will take you long to get through each book. I'd even say it's easier read than Sun Eater because you don't need to remember that many character and house names. On the other hand I read Fifth Head of Cerberus by Wolfe and the second part of the book felt like reading a fever dream.

Relics are crazy things. Some enterprising fellow sold little wooden boxes with a mirror inside to those that came to visit a relic (can’t remember what it was or where) so they could take home a ‘vision’ of the relic held inside the box. You couldn’t make it up. Fact is weirder than fiction sometimes.

Ya’ll gotta check out Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa. The novelization of the greatest Japanese swordsman, and perhaps the greatest swordsman of any region in history. Undefeated in over 60 duels and author of The Book of Five Rings. He also fights entire martial schools by himself, using his very rare in history dual wielding style of long and short sword. There is also a great movie trilogy based on the novel.

If you want to watch banger of a show I recommend "From". It's the best thing since Breaking Bad, early Game of Thrones and Westworld (season 1 only). My jaw was dropping how good the acting and writing was in the first season. Second season is still great 9/10 and third one is coming out soon. It's Lost done right. At least so far and these two seasons are so good that I don't even care if they screw up the ending. Nobody in the show is dumb. Nobody acts ridiculous to create artificial drama. These people feel so real I can't believe it's being made in this era of garbage television. But nobody seems to be aware of it because it premieres on MGM+ and Amazon licenses it.
