Now I don’t know about Brooklyn but in NJ the yellowjackets are everywhere. So how can you stop that?

I lost a hive this year to wasps hear in the UK , I to made a mistake that I’ll never make again. I’ve been bee keeping for 3 years,

There is a fake wasp nest sold in stores here , maybe you have them too. It doesn't keep them away but they won't make a nest within a 60 yard radius . The downside is it is made of paper and needs to be hung out of the rain.

Brian is going to spray the hive asap. We’ll over again next spring with bees from Georgia.

@@gardenfork did the wasps move in and that is why you have to spray? Or is he going to spray the nest next door? One of these days I may add a hive to the back corner of my lot. I enjoy learning through you struggles. Hard to learn when everything is perfect. Thanks again.

@@gardenfork did you treat for mites? A strong hive should be able to fend off invaders. Maybe the hive was weak which led to the yellow jackets attacking. I have lost hives around this time of year because I did not treat and the mite population tanked the hive.

So that's it? your entire hive is gone? Do they kill the bees or are the bees driven out and away?

Yes the hive is toast. The wasps kill the bees usually.

@@gardenfork That is so not cool.. I now feel even less sadness eradicating wasp nests.. I'm so sorry for this loss.. I hope you will do this again next year with more success. Do you have bees in your other place? or only in Brooklyn?

I've never been stung by yellow jackets myself but when I was around 5 in the summer of 1980 my brother,his friend, and a couple of girls were out hiking and they got into a nest of yellow jackets,my brother and his friend got away but the girls got stung real bad like over 100 times and had to be taken to the hospital and put on ice, in later years armadillos arrived in our area and they started killing yellow jackets and have really thinned them down,so today the chance of being attacked by yellow jackets isn't that great, thanks armadillos!

hey Eric! on one of your podcasts you mentioned having a neighbor (or relative?) who resells things she buys at estate sales, etc. -- I think that would be an interesting episode (podcast or video), if she would agree to be on it ... I lost my hives to an exterminator business called Exterminator Joe. They come to my neighbor’s to spray only for mosquitoes and they kill everything. Sorry about the wasp in your hat-I know how they hurt.

@@gardenfork now for the rest of the story … I had only 2 hives. I am a newbie and have to figure and time come spring to make or replace it.
