This is great! Thanks for transcribing Derek's playing - For those who don't know, Derek Paravicini is a musical savant. He was born blind and severely autistic and he learned to communicate and understand the world through playing the piano. He has perfect pitch and can recognize every individual tone in 20 or more note chords. He learns everything by ear almost instantly and he loves to improvise and try out different styles. This particular clip was filmed in Taiwan in 2018.

I remember seeing this guy, literally 5-10 years ago on Norwegian TV. He has autism and blindness, yet can remember thousands of songs - and improvise around them. Was in a documentary about savants.

Derek is not only an amazing talent considering his blindness and autism, he abilities surpass many pianists who are sighted and neuro-typical. He is the definition of the words 'differently abled' It's a joy to see him express himself and interpret the world around him through the medium of music.

Neurodivergent musicians have always been kind of fascinating to me. I knew of an autistic trumpet player when I was in school that was apparently really good. He ended up quitting which is unfortunate. I would’ve loved the opportunity to get to play with him

This is a very famous song in Taiwan / China region from a TV show, called “I can’t let you go” in English but the Original Chinese name is “new butterfly dream”, the original Chinese lyric is beautiful as well. However the how the sign on the back describes him is not quite make people comfortable, it seems not quite respectful. Maybe just me overthinking.

Not to diminish this guy's ability at all (he is incredibly talented), but people seem to think you have to be a savant to be able to do this, when in reality most professional jazz piano players would have little difficulty creating similar improvisations based on simple themes.

Most of his skill attributed to being a savant stems from his absolute pitch, ability to memorize and play a long segment of music with extreme precision, and his ability to transpose pretty much anything on the fly. It's more mental than technical in terms of his skills from being a savant.

Derek was born blind and autistic and with severe learning difficulties. In his everyday life he finds most of the things we find easy very difficult, for example language and self-care. However, when it comes to music he can do things automatically and efortlessly that most people would find impossible.
