You can undervolt and O/C fine tune the i9 for even more performance while drawing less power in games or productivity depending on the needs. Leaving it stock is pretty dumb. Same with the gpu, you should undervolt and O/C for optimized performance and way less power draw.
@adriancioroianu1704
@adriancioroianu1704 9 ай бұрын
Reviewers should make tutorials about fine tuning the i7's and i9's especially of the last 2 gens. These cpu's are extremely capable of delovering up to 20% more performance while consuming 30-40% less power in games for example. But no, most reviews are at stock and conclusion based on those numbers. I don't have an analogy in mind right now but anyway, you should never buy an i7 or i9 if you don't know how to use it properly. It's just a waste of electricity and money in the end of the day. If you're not willing to fine tune your hardware just go with amd, they are made like consoles nowadays, you don't have to do anything extra, but the stock numbers are deceiving to the actual potential of modern i7's and i9's.

*Slower fps doesn't mean the cpu is a bottleneck. The 12400f can be slower at 4K but it's not a bottleneck. It would be a bottleneck at lower resolution and a very high refresh rate. Ex: A 300hz monitor at 1080p would REALLY show the difference between the cpu's. Whether it's a $400 or $4000 pc, there is always a bottleneck in a pc depending on resolution and game settings.

I have a 7900XTX paired with a R7 5700x. I *was* concerned about a bottleneck @1440p 165hz. Lucky for me and for many other enthusiasts on a budget, you don’t need to go all out on an expensive cpu or a brand new platform to get good performance with a 80 or 90 class card. This video is proof of that concept. If you asked me how different a 14th gen i9 and a 12th gen i5 performed in comparison, i would have expected much more of a difference, even at 4k. I could have a few more frames with a better processor paired with my 7900XTX, but im happy with my setup.

@JFKtheV
@JFKtheV 9 ай бұрын
Well,@@MrMilkyCoco, you're obviously missing the point of this whole video. You don't need a top of the line processor to adequately game on a top of the line GPU. First of all, I had enough money to buy a 7900XTX. I bought one because I wanted a 4080 class card, without the 100 dollar BARE MINIMUM Nvidia tax. Secondly, I didn't get a 5800x3d because its almost 140 dollars more expensive for a chip that performs only ~15-25% faster in games. Also not to mention that the x3d has a peak wattage of 130w, where as the 5700x is just 87w. I used a 3700x for a long time, and it served me very well. A 5700x is more than enough for my use case. So, with my build, I get maybe 10 to 20 less fps while saving 400 dollars. Thats what I meant by "enthusiast on a budget".

Kind of what I did. Not too old, but I got a 4090 a few months ago, and initially kept my 12700K, as I didn't feel like spending over $2K at once. This combination did pretty good, but not great. This is one of the best takes on the 4080 super/A high end GPU ever. Good job for coming up with a new creative way to review the 4080 super. If you skimp on the CPU/motherboard/cooler you're leaving all that extra bandwidth for a higher end graphics card.

Great comparison! It's rare that reviewers put big hardware in midrange systems, but I feel like this represents the majority of people contemplating upgrades. I play VR often and was thinking of upgrading the GPU but wasn't sure if I should think about getting an X3D CPU first, since people say that it smooths out FPS a lot, especially in Skyrim and Fallout VR. Here I can see that, while the Bethesda engine in Starfield is more CPU limited than other games and the newer chip does help, it's not going to prevent a fast card from being a lot bigger of an upgrade than a new processor would be at those high resolutions. Very useful result, thanks!

I already have a 3080, and even at 1440p, a few select titles that actually use the CPU quite a bit (like BG3) actually struggles to maintain 60fps min at 100% CPU load. I figured the Super would be massively bottlenecked until later this year, but I guess it's just game dependent.

That's all well and good, but when you're making practical decisions as a buyer, you need to know how much CPU you need to properly use the GPU without wasting money. Nice twist on the traditional benchmark process and that is one beefy card, if it can pull off +60fps at either 1440p or 2160p pretty much maxed out! Personally, if I had a GPU of this calibre, I'd definitely go with something like a 14900K CPU and a decent board, to get the most out of the GPU and also to not make the CPU as much of a limitation if dropping back to lower resolutions such as 1080p (I do not have a monitor that exceeds 1080p resolution). Having said that, I'd go with a decent motherboard no matter what the setup, because only having 2 RAM slots is an unforgiving limitation, as is only having a single M.2 slot and 4 SATA ports.

I’d be curious to see how the card performs in a scenario like that. In games like Cyberpunk or The Witcher, if you have something between 70 to 120fps, I feel it’s more than enough.

Only back in 2020 it was not possible to get a high end cpu with an upgrade path since amd and intel were both at the end of their cycle. So i,m wondering what a 4080 would do in a system with a 9700k actually. If you would come across a chanse to test this I would be eternally gratefull. Big props to you and have a nice weekend buddy

That KCD performance is crazy. I have a i9 9900kf and I know it's a bit older but I get nothing but micro stutter in npc heavy areas. This has been a frustration of mine for years. Currently running an XTX and if I want to get rid of the stuttery frames I have to turn settings way way down. On ultra I get plenty of fps but the frametime graph looks like criminal taking a polygraph.

NVidia can give this to as many reviewers as it likes in an attempt to convince people to buy it. Sadly its just too overpriced and doesn't represent a great purchase, even with the $200 price drop compared to the non-super. Congratulations on getting the sample card, nice review.

I used to have an I7 2700K (overclocked at 4.8Ghz though!) paired with a 2080 Super and I remember that it was the first time the CPU was actually suffering a tad. However, I was totally able to play Doom Eternal at 4K and 60fps, even with my super old CPU. In my experience, for gaming you can keep the CPUs a few years and they are still fine. Yeah, you may have some stuttering here and there, but if you are not into competitive FPS it is OK 😊 The main problem I see, in the long run, is that eventually you end using lots of power when you keep the old CPU, even if it keeps up. I am currently using a 13900KS and it is so power hungry that i really don't see myself either overclocking it much or keeping it for 10 years.

the overhead CPU figures on the I9 would mean you could do some cpu tasks in the background while also gaming, perhaps render a video or listen to music with chrome open in the background etc

Thank you for your work; it's a great video. I also noticed that the power draw difference between the i9 and i5 is 2x up to 3x for a 3% to 5% increase in performance. It's not worth it for me, considering the price difference, of course.

I am loving that I can go from my PC's Forza Horizon 5, fly about the place in my MK1 Escort Cossie or my much loved Metro 6R mental motor (have driven a real one) then go onto my Xbox One and pick up where I left off... then back to the PC and back again loaded up ready to tear up some more Mexical roads. Currently torturing myself with LotR: Gollum, bought it for a few quid and whilst it has some quirk and charm... its not even in the same universe as Return to Moria lol

This was very interesting to see. The averages were all pretty much identical, just the little stuttery bits were worse on the older CPU. Obviously people are going on about how it would be worse at 1080P because the CPU would bottleneck but you'd clearly be getting playable frame rates--use a FPS limiter if you're really that worried about the stutters! I tend to run a CPU through several generations of GPU before upgrading (in the case of my i7 2600 I ran it through 8 generations!) and the only bad part is the keyboard warriors telling you how poorly your PC will run (except it doesn't).

It's marketing and it's working... They miss out the part of getting out the best of what you have. It's nowadays like: " Newest CPU is 5%-10% faster than previous gen making it obsolete 😅!!!!!!!!!"

I run almost the exact system you tested in the video except I have more ram. Not as ridiculous as you think. People spend way too much money on their processors in gaming only PCs. My 12400 has lasted me 3 video card upgrades now and at 4k which I exclusively game at shows a very small frame rate difference. My 4080 Super is definitely the last card I’ll run with it as there is some bottleneck now. Once the new Ryzens hit I’ll upgrade to their cheapest 8 core more than likely and do the whole thing over again. 😅 Oh and I also run my system on a Seasonic 650 watt power supply that’s been going strong for over 6 years now. Stop buying extremely overkill PSUs! Quality>>>>>wattage.

Very interesting! It's a nice datapoint for CPU bottlenecking. Now we should get people to test even older CPU's and see where performance really falls off at 4K.

I don't know if you have one but it would have been really interesting to see how a higher end AMD card compared in the "mid range" pc and how ot compares when it comes to bottlenecking.

A 6900xt from a gen ago would perform better than a 4090 simply because of AMD's less driver overhead, when CPU bottlenecked that is.

Just proves why I hate mainstream media testing only 1080p because it makes people believe even in 4k the difference will be massive and it isnt at all. Very small in most. But it will helps your lows but then again these freaking budget cpus are monsters compared to past. The 13400f matches the 12600k and the 13600k matches the 12900k. Pretty insane. Most games in 4k only need a few cores believe it or not to function correctly. 1 core is rough as we have seen tested so if you get a 4080 qnd want to game 4k you dont need the 7800x3d or the 14900k. Is it nice? Yes but its not needed. The 13600k imo is the perfect cpu for that balance. Enough to be able to game in 1080p without to much of a bottleneck. 1440p gaming is amazing and then 4k is perfection. The 4k results are almoat identical to the 14900k even in the lows! So enjoy and save you some money because gpus matter 10x more and whenever i see peoppe say i got a 7800x3d and noticed a massive difference in my average fps im like yeah ok 1080p gamer. Then they make it out like it was 4k. Im like no maybe a select few games but its not massive.

Thank you so much for this. I have been wondering if a decent 750 watt PSU would be sufficient for 4080 super and how much of a bottleneck my 6 core CPU would make above 1080p resolution. This video made that clear. Why other tech channels ignore this type of scenarios, some people don't have the budget for complete system upgrade, they may upgrade "this" now, "that" later, one by one as their budget would allow.

I had a similar experience with a Ryzen 5600X + RX 7800 XT combo. I was for sure convinced that the 5600x wouldn't bottleneck the 7800XT but dang it wouldn't go over 70% usage in some games at all. Had to upgrade to a 5800X3D to solve that problem. Which also forced me to buy a new cooler, but whatever, you can always re-use your cooler in a new system later down the line.

I absolutely *hate* frame gen because there's ZERO reason it should be limited to ONLY 40-series cards. From the 20-series onward, Nvidia GPUs feature the same hardware fundamentally (Tensor, RT, and CUDA cores), so there's literally no excuse behind restricting the 20 and 30 series cards from being able to utilize frame gen. It's 100% an (incredibly greedy) marketing tactic on Nvidia's behalf so they can get away with releasing subpar products, allow game devs to be lazy with not optimizing their games, and manipulating ignorant consumers into buying something that's inferior to what they already had (unless you're spending $500-600+). Frame gen also makes people think their 4060 or 4060 Ti is "so much faster" than their predecessors when in reality the 3060 Ti and 3070 are still far superior in sheer raster performance. Guess it's to be expected, since they have a proper 256-bit memory bus vs a puny 128-bit one...and don't even get me started on VRAM capacity. The only "meaningful" improvement with the recent "Super" variants of select 40-series cards was giving the 4070 Ti Super 16GB over the 4070 Ti's 12GB. And the 4080 Super at $999 MSRP is not inherently a bad deal, but for most people anything below the 4070 is an absolute waste. Those who are looking for something in the $300-400 price range are better off getting a 6700 XT, or second hand 3080 / 6800 XT (both of which are still better than a 4070 anyway) TLDR: frame gen feels like it's going to cause more damage to the PC gaming landscape than actually help, since it's only useful for the lower end cards and being exclusively limited to the 40-series currently makes me not want to buy another Nvidia card. Hell, even AMD's frame gen equivalent will be available to a vast majority of GPUs just like FSR is.

4080/5950x here, and yes I did overpay for the card but coming from a 1080 Ti there just wasn't a very compelling argument for any card as a legitimate long term upgrade path, and 4090's were $2k at the time. Still not happy about 16GB especially with the refresh, but at least we're finally seeing price DROPS, at least on paper. Would like to see non super 4080's hit the $900 mark to sell out old stock.
